How are Servers(waiters) treated in CANADA
I was just wondering how servers are treated compared to U.S> servers in Canada?????
Since I have no clue I can tell you how most are treated in the U.S. and you can use this to compare and contrast.....
On Average servers are paid around $2.83 an hour(well in pennsylvania anyways) after taxes are deducted most servers get in thier paycheck about $1.00 _ $1.50) an hour.... minimum wage for non-tipped employees is $5.15 an hour both are U.S. dollars of course.... Here in the U.S. though the normal service tip for good service is anywhere from 15% to 25%...... Most servers will tell you a good tip will be 18% for good service anything higher for exceptional service no les than 10% for poor serivce... In the U.S. however for years 15% was accepted as a very good tip... Nowadays with the increase of living etc etc 15% just doesnt cut it... Sorry to say that most of the older public just doesnt know this and they are used to tipping the way they have allways tipped.... Others feel "let me just throw the server a $5.00 dollar tip no matter what the bill is.... Many don't realize that we really don't get too much of a paycheck.. if any(I NEVER recieve a paycheck it's allways voided) since my check goes to pay U.S. taxes.. also many don't realize that a percentage of our tips goes to bussers and bartenders so if a table doenst give us adequate tips or even doenst give us anything money is coming out of our pocket/tips just to pay other co-workers for servicing that table.... I was just curious how servers in Canada are treated tip/pay rate wise... Many people also feel that serving is a below-class job... I am sorry but when I worked at this one job in Center City Philadelphia I made more than some doctors so this job should be respected as with any job... How do they treat servers in Canada?
Was just curious since many U.S. citezens are soo unhappy with this election and wanting to migrate to Canada(I myself am thinking about it.... wish I wouldnt disrupt other peoples lives with a decision like this..; which is why I am only thinking about it) But if I had a stable job like a waiter(which I have done for almost 9 years now... BTW I am a computer science college graduate as well cough cough offshoring cough cough... I just like to wait tables more) that may make a very hard decision a bit easier)

I HATE it when a table complains about their meal (but not in an annoying, stupid, i-want-everything-for-free way) then gets some food comped or when a table uses a coupon, then tips on the adjusted amount, not the beginning amount... AGGH

Now, I hate to be racist, and I'm not trying to offend anyone, but... foreigners rarely tip over 10% from my experiences. White trash tip 10%, even some business men only tip 10-15%. Old people tip 10% or less. Black people tip 10% or less (even though I had a party of 10 once and they gave me 20%)... fuckin'... the only people who tip well and make busting my ass worthwhile are those who have worked foodservice, whether they be black, white, asian, indian, whatever... it's sad.

I'm pretty much it. I'm a Canadian who has been in food service for 3 years. Plus I'm also a computer science grad if that matters.
Serving here is decent. They just raised the server min. wage to $6.15 an hour + tips. Personally, I'm taking a break from serving because I got sick of the stress and bullshit.
Another good thing - There's ALWAYS jobs. My last 3 serving jobs I got by just walking in and asking. It's no big deal. As a server, you know why.

I have officially lowered my tipping level.
For my whole life, my normal tip has been 15%. Now, provided the server is polite and prompt, the tip is 10%.
15% isn't out of the question - but it requires more than simply adequate service. And if my server is inattentive, their tip will be less than 10%.

I got a job as a technical writer which pays the same, but I get to sit on my ass and make my own hours.
This way I have one boss instead of a restaurant full of them.

I know this topic has been done BUT I was simply asking how practices are done in CANADA.. not how everyone else tips or how much they feel they should tip... especially with how Americans feel with this election and many wanting to migrate to Canada.... This is why I didnt bump up this old thread......
I was just watching this television report about how mnay people want to migrate to Canada and it made me curious as my profession is a waiter... The old thread was mainly a bitch war... this was something I was trying to avoid with a new post....

In California I've made $6.75 an hour, plus tips, and two different places I worked for never made me declare them. One place only made me declare the credit card tips, which were pretty small compared to the cash tips. When I was bartending I would bring home $50-100 (split with another bartender at a place that didn't do a ton of business), tax free. No one ever said anything..
I don't get why that is okay for California but all other places seem to NOT pay servers anything by the hour?

Ok, it took me a long ass fucking time to read this whole thread but this is something I feel strongly about having previously worked in 2 different jobs where I relied mainly tips for my salary.
In this entire thread (which I read from beginning to end just now) I did not see a single server in here bitching about their job being shitty because people do not tip. All the server crowd seems to be trying to do is explain to the shitty tippers that it is proper to tip so that they know better. I think a lot of people honestly dont tip just because they dont realize what part of the servers salary that is. They expect those cheap fucks to come in, and they expect it as a part of their job as I did, thats all well and good, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't think that most of those people are people who just don't know any better because 90% of the time they are. I'm not even talking about people who dont tip when the service was horrible. I'm talking who just tippy shitty all the time.
Those 2.13 or 2.83 or watever an hour don't even matter. I've seen some of my friends get paychecks which say "VOID" across them simply because their taxes outweighed their check for the week. A check which was for like $40 or something along the lines of that. So, guess what, its YOU the customer who pays these people. The business provides a place for them to serve YOU, and you are the one who is responsible for paying them for their services, not the establishment. They're not serving the establishment, they're serving YOU. If somebody gives you good service and you dont tip them properly IE. 2 dollar tip left with nickels and dimes for a $35 dollar check for 3 people, do not expect good service the next time you come in there, or even adequate service for that matter. Why should they just serve you for free? I dont think they should, but most of the time, they do it anyway, and people still tip shitty..
I know personally when people used to not tip me, I didnt' give a shit because next time I would just ignore them and not give 2 fucks to care about their service at all. I would just prioritize the people who I knew were going to pay me. Even when I was doing deliveries. Guess who was getting their shit first before anybody else? People who paid more.. People who didn't pay, I would take my time, not even purposely, but just cause I didn't care about getting it to them if I wasn't goign to get paid.
Also, as somebody who has worked for a year as a delivery driver, I can honestly say, the people who tip more are usually the ones who are poor and have worked shitty ass jobs. Everytime I pulled up to a big ass house somewhere in a nice neighborhood, no matter how quick I got there, or how big the check was, I would be getting $2-$3 dollars. It wouldn't matter that there was a fucking blizzard outside and that I was an 18 year old kid risking my life to get these people some pizza, chicken, whatever the fuck it was, then walk through a foot of snow and get wet as fuck to get it to their door, still warm, while they sat on their ass and watched TV, then I get 2 dollars? You expect me to not care?
No driver will ever get less then $5 dollars from me, unless the establishment is ridiculously close and they take over an hour. Even in that case, I ask, is it busy, and base my tip off of that. I dont care if my order is $8 dollars. Anything less then $5 for having somebody use their own car to drive something to your house while you comfortably sit on your ass is cheap. I know this cause I've been there and after you have.. then you can talk to ..
Oh yea, and you can't really say a restaraunt job is easier then an office job. Michael is absolutely right. I've worked in several different offices and several different restaraunts and some restaraunts were easier then some office jobs + vice versa. Out of all of them, I'd have to say that my job as a help desk technician for pharma sales reps has been the most frustrating to date. Sales reps are fucking annoying people who know nothing about computers, try somebody yelling at you for an hour and a half cause you can't get their mouse to work, meanwhile it doesn't work cause they cleaned it by putting it in the dishwasher.

No one has really addressed my issue with tipping, which pertains specifically to California. California labor laws dictate that servers get an hourly wage plus tips. The tip does not supplement the wage. Therefore, I'm curious what other servers think about this. I should still tip the same, even though they get a normal hourly wage?

I really don't understand how you think it's right for someone to tip at all, it's NOT the customers responsibility to tip you as I've said earlier just because you work for a pathetically low income. Complain to your boss or find a new job.

In the headier days of my youth, I would regular go out to eat with a friend and we would tip 100% -- each of us would pay the entire bill.
Also, black people should not be allowed to eat out/go to bars/order pizza.
Currently I usually tip 20-25%, unless I'm eating lunch alone and the bill is <$10, in which case I try to make it $2 regardless. The middle-aged Vietnamese lady shouldn't get a dollar because of the low, low cost of the lunch special.
The only time I undertip is when there is a cute female bartender. I figure all the drunk assholes will make up for it. Plus, they always suck at mixing drinks. The best bartenders are always middle-aged fat white guys.

It's a different country where tipping is the norm. Writing a letter to your local representative about your shitty wages as a server isn't going to change anything.
