your opinion of video games?

PsychoKitten: It is anti-social when one person sits and plays a game or even posts messages to an internet forum while other person is left standing out of action :)
It's not so much anti-social when you're facing your buddies in a multi-player game in one building and getting very verbal at the same time :) (get your feeling involved)
Games could lead to anti-social behavior and games are no substitute for plain vanilla existance, but they add so much spice... You just have to find a genre which captures your attention quickly or to which you relate the most.

Don't be knocking Kevin and Perry now.
But your right nothing more pointless then when you have a few friends around and everyone ends up watching two people playing games and being unsocialable. If me and my friends want to be unsocialable then we'll just roll a big fat joint and go off on a stoner tangent.

Like quite a few in this thread, I grew up as an accessory to my first Nintendo machines. You got the console, two controllers and an extra cable to plug into your ass (or maybe I was just playing the wrong way)... you get the picture. In more recent years, I played CS for 2.5 years, almost every day for an average of 5 to 6 hours a day. Up to 8 to 12 hours when I was unemployed.
I haven't played a computer game in almost four months now. I haven't spent a single weekend at home those four months either. Every single weekend of the last four months, has been better than the entire two or so years I spent playing CS.
Five knife kills in the opening round of de_dust? Wouldn't trade it for two minutes out of a good night out. I'm not slagging games or those who play them, but right now, I'm too busy making up for lost time since I've spent way too much of my life playing them.
And I can't agree that video games aren't anti social. Sure, a lot of people who play these games are mentally well-adjusted, but having spent 2.5 years practically living on CS servers I know that there are a lot of angry, young boys out there with really poor social skills who think guns and killing are really cool.
take your average rough n tough footy player, and the nerd behind the keyboard, whos more likely to start and or participate in a fight?
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine killers, had custom Doom maps with pictures of their classmates available on their website before they went on their shooting spree.
I don't think the games make anyone violent anymore than depressing songs make anyone kill themselves. They only add to an atmosphere and environment of violence that young boys (esp. in the 10-16 age group) thrive in today. The answer isn't to ban the games of course because at the end of the day, responsibility lies with their parents to make sure they grow up with some perspective and useful life experience outside of games.

It's true. But at least it gives them an avenue to vent anger rather than repressing it. ie, it's better to kill a hundred cacodemons on a pc than taking it elsewhere. It's not a good situation either way.

Plus they tend to listen to indy music a lot too. ;) j/k

Computer games kill man
October 09, 2002
A 24-year-old South Korean man died after playing computer games nonstop for 86 hours, Korean police have said.
The jobless man, identified by police only by his last name Kim, was found dead yesterday at an Internet cafe in Kwangju, 260 kilometres southwest of Seoul, they said.
Quoting witnesses, police detective Oh Myong-sik in Kwangju said the man had been virtually glued to the computer since late last Friday and had no decent sleep and meals.
The man collapsed in front of the counter early yesterday but soon regained consciousness. He then went to the toilet where he later was found dead, the police officer said.
Initial investigation ruled out the possibility of murder, police said. An autopsy was planned.

Computer games rock. I spent a pretty happy year and a half working in the games industry as a level/story designer and had a total blast with it. I still play quite a few, and feel almost lost if there isn't at least something on the PC/Xbox/PS2 that I am currently playing, even if it is re-playing something (I am currently starting GTA3 for the third time... damn I want Vice City to come out)

MDMA-4-ALL (And video games for me please)

I remember getting a NES and Super Mario 2 cos everyone hated it.I hated it to but I wouldnt stop till I finished it.I remember playing hardcore for a couple of hours, pausing every half hour or so,(the days when memory cards did not exist) sitting on my knees just inches from the TV.I had just reached the last part of the game.Realising this,I decided to re-position myself so that I would be comfortable when I started play.*Sigh*,I brought my right knee out from underneath me and hit the reset button by mistake :( :( :(
I was sooo mad.Threw the controller at the screen and stormed off.
Even though I got a PSone and PS2,I still enjoy playin my SNES.16 bits of action packed mayhem! :)
Its funny to see Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island being released on Game Boy Advance for the new generation when I'm at home playing them on The Super Nintendo. So really,I have a larger version of the Game Boy Advance.
Games rock tha house!

im addicted to warcraft 3 and counterstrike. my girlfriend doesnt mind it too much so long as she isnt around when im playing it.
and remember that folks, i always say the forgotten victims of counter strike are the poor girlfriends, sleeping in internet cafes while they're enthused boyfriends throw another "Fire in the hole!"
virtual reality is no substitute

A guy from work i see alot has an X-box, with a shitload of games on the HD.
Its a pretty g0od system.
Video games are good for like 15-20 minutes then im either bored of them or gave up because im getting thrashed.
Im really into playing blood wake on X-box, its this boat game and you go around and shoot eachother with mines, torpedos, these fire things, and guns its pretty alright.
All the other games have mad graphics.
We also play Pong on the X-box, that game with the ball that you hit too and fro
