your opinion of video games?

Video games? Hideous was of time.
A hideously fun, addictive, escapist, funky waste of time at that ;)
My computer is pretty crusty right now, so I am running Linux and trying to educate myself a little better in a game free computer world... Which is just as time wasting, but a little more satisfying.
Seriously though, games are the showcase of what cutting edge technology can actually crunch out... I mean, imagine how sad the world would be if our computers were only designed with spreadsheets in mind?>

I can't see myself growing out of copmuter games. I started with the old school sierra games, space quest, police quest, kings quest, hero's quest, leisure suit larry! How many hour's i've spent playing those games...And my nintendo games...fark how did i have the time?
Anyway as people have suggested back to neverwinter or maybe finishing downloading unreal tournament 2003 demo?

Havent played any for a while but I am a recovering gamer-geek.
So much so that i used to design levels for Quake, Quake2 and Counter-strike and at one point was offered a contract for US $3.5k a map by a certain large hardware company...aaah would have been sweet.
But if i find a good replayable game then im hooked..Quake, Quake2, Ultima Online, Diablo1/2, CounterStrike, Neverwinter, Warcraft3, America's Army..
Still nothing has really *grabbed* me recently.
if any of you guys still run quake for laughs then send me an email and ill give you the URL to get the maps from.
A fantastically fun way to completely waste time :)

i was part of the 1999/2000 sydney quake 2 community at the lans, and the major online team dm servers.. id have to say it was the most fun ive ever had with games.. its unfortunate that no other game is yet to match good old q2 in terms of community. btw, ive played and met a number of sydney progamers over the years, wasnt anything special
:)

Melanch, you'll find all multiplayer net games have a good community to them.
CS has a huge one, especially due to the length of the games existance.
Quake1 and Quake3 had a huge one too, mostly the communites are formed through Messageboards, or Chat Channels. So if your interested in gaming communities, they're the places to look.

yeh
video games have been great.
its been a crazy generation to grow up in.
i havent played em much in the past years but recently have got stuck into War 3. I think its a good game. definately worth a buy if you were into war2 or red alert or SC.
i started the FPS genre on wolfenstein and ended in DOOM 2..so i wasnt there.
my all time favourites are:
california games on the **atari
gain ground on the **sega
conan the cimmerian on the **pc oh and war2
silkworm on the **amiga
street fighter series in the **arcade
and many others.....those are the ones that have struck me recently
now why were games so enthralling and bring back so many memories?.... god if work was like that, i'd be in heaven.

melanchonic,
You'll grow out of being obsessed. Christ things got out of control for me when a friend gave me an awesome Doom II map editor when I was at Uni. Just when Doom was loosing it's charm, along came Command & Conquer and Warcraft II. I only just scraped through (although I totally ass-raped the important subjects) because of it and computer games in general. I loved them all, the cute fuzzy ones, platform games, strategy, army command games, the multi-user deathmatch ones (I had a LAN card back in the Doom days in my pc) and incorporating computer game speech in everyday talk was the norm (I should find/start a thread for that). Yep, just a little bit in the life of a once dedicated computer geek.
If I get a game nowadays (which is rare), I usually play it out to completion and then put it aside. I got Warcraft III on the weekend and it is the first game I've played since Medal of Honour at the start of the year. I'm loving it, but I know that once I complete the game that it will be mothballed. Although I do attend LAN games about once a year still, but at least it's down from the 15-20 per year from when I was at uni.
Computer games are great, but I swear to god they are more addictive than any drug I have ever come across.

I used to be a games freak, played alot of games back in year's 7 and 8
But grew out of them
Now the only games i can stand to play for more than 10 mins at a time are war games
Like close combat, combat mission etc
Real strategy games, not like AOE or those sorts :D
Anyway my prob is that i stopped playing games 2 years ago coz of my hsc, and now as my hsc draws to an end i have found that i will need some serious updating to be able to play again
So i dont think thats on teh cards for now, it will prob be another year or more before i start playing games again
Games that make u think i believe are perfectly healthy as long as ur not doing it all the time
Games like Q3, where u just have to memorize the map and u run around do the same thing over and over i believe is numbing and stupifying :D

I love my computer games, and i'm still very partial to my old skool video games ;)
I havent had a chance to play many games lately, but i've just started getting back into Diablo II, and I must say it is very addictive :)
They are the best things to play if you want to waste a bit of time (and sleep ;) )

Just like Raving Loony I have to say my obsession stopped and I too spent hours in the DOOM/Heretic level editor tuning the textures on the wall and tweaking linedefs instead of going out or studying :)
The games I played in single player mode this year as such are Medal of Honour and War3 but now I'm starting to pay my PS2 some attention again as well as gaming on my PC and at work.
Basically the strength of gaming addiction fluctuates, but it's always there.
I dont extremely excited about new games though and get tired of them quicker, perhaps I've out-played my desire for games back in school/uni.
Sounds just like talking about drugs, Yes games = Drugs

Building DOOM II levels used to be the best. It was so quick and easy after a while I was whipping up professional quality MUD levels in about 2 hours. But one night my friend made up a pearler. No armour or health available, it was the perfect size and weapon selection for a 4 player LAN game. The level got belted to death, literally. The first night we tried it the NET frag count was 300/230/200/150 when the game crashed. That's 880 kills NET.
How sad, eh? :D

Wot? that u played it that long or that u remember the stats :D
hehe j/k dood :)

Do any of you videogamers remember what outdoors, and sunshine and fresh air are? ;)
In my opinion they are a waste of time - money and energy.......DO SOMETHING USEFUL INSTEAD!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Video game doesnt judge you, video game's your friend... :)
</Cartman voice>
Seriously, nothing wrong with experiencing both worlds.
I for example don't spend all of my time with games/computers anymore and do mix it with outdoor activities.
I do agree when there is nothing but video games in your life it might have bad influence *looks at himself*, but they provide a good release mechanism and ability to forget reality as well as simply pass time. They can also bring like minded people together.
Like many other things when used in moderation games are great benefit and not the other way around....

Hi, let me introduce Playstation Widows Anonymous, the support group for girfriends of guys who are addicted to video games.
I'm a founding member, anyone else care to join?
Hell I'll join, sounds like a good way to pick up chicks.
You want my opinion on games, just read my sig.

Anybody who saw me at RobertRollies over the Twisted weekend will know my opinion of any kind of computer/video game.
They are the most anti-social things ever invented. I seriously cannot comprehend how people can sit in a room an stare at a tv/computer screen/two people playing games when there are things they could be doing.
It doesn't help that it takes all the attention away from me either ;)

Raving Loony: Mmmmm :) I Used to make Doom II level's also, I was addicted to that game. I still love it to this day, but I don't make levels anymore.
Kitty: Ahhh.... Yes I cannot foget that damn game... "Super Crack Fighter", I'm almost certain that game was not switched off at all that weekend, except for when we watched 'Kevin & Perry Go Large' which sucked :P
