Thats exactly how i feel man i dont believe in any god, i believe in evolution and that christianity is very detrimental to people in general. things would be much better if the mainstream religeon was budhism.

The world would be better if logic and the freedom to explore our imagination were the world's religion; yet we live in a god-fearing hate spewing cesspool of ignorance that collectively decries that which it fails to understand.

Freedom isn't an American construct, it's a human right. The world will never be free until the world is free from religion.

If god is fundamentally good, why must he be feared? If he is neither good nor evil, why root for the one playing both sides?

If you find god, keep him to yourself. Let others find their own.

(Those are my four nuggets of wisdom, you can clearly see my angle here)

Considering people are not only free to choose religion, but do so on a daily basis, id say thats unfair.

May people CHOOSE to follow a religion. That is their choice and their freedom. Why deny them that freedom when begging for freedom yourself? Their right to do w/e they want as long as it doesn't impact you negatively.

AND FYI: Someone who is a GOOD christian, a good person, doing the right thing day in and day out...i'd say religion in that scenario has drastically improved the world for the better.

I am not religious. I do not go to church, temple, a monastary, anything. But to deny all of the good religion has done for the world....is just as bad as denying all the evils it has done as well.

Two quote by Gandhi:

"I came to the conclusion long ago … that all religions were true and also that all had some error in them, and whilst I hold by my own, I should hold others as dear as Hinduism. So we can only pray, if we are Hindus, not that a Christian should become a Hindu … But our innermost prayer should be a Hindu should be a better Hindu, a Muslim a better Muslim, a Christian a better Christian."

"I worship God as Truth only. I have not yet found Him, but I am seeking after Him."

In your case, your religion is your atheism. It applies. You should want people to become better human beings, regardless of what road they take to get there. God does not need to be a "god" as we perceive, religion as we perceive. A truly religious persons quest for religion is a way to better themselves, be more loving open and compassionate. THAT is a truly religious person, not someone who uses the name of God as a means to hate/demean others.

A Christian/Hindu/Muslim who preaches hate in some form: against gays or blacks or jews is NOT a true devout. That is a horrible representation of religion that most non religious people hold dear.

Religion is many peoples quest for truth, aka doing the RIGHT THING! But that is how THEY find truth. Honesty, integrity, treating man as you deserve, these are all truths, and god in Gandhis eyes. How you find truth, your spot in the world, that is your quest for truth or God as Gandhi would say.

Favorite gandhi quote:

"Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it."

In case you cant tell, Gandhi is one of my heroes. One of the greatest human beings to have ever lived IMO.

I hear you, people are fundamentally "free" to worship as they please, yet the world is filled with much persecution for choosing the "wrong" side.

I don't believe we'll ever live in a world where religions can peacefully coexist. Thus the only conclusion to live in a peaceful society of unity is to be free of religion. I deeply feel that way, however pessimistic and anti-spiritual that may be. I think true spirituality comes from within, not external sources that come off as cults. Religion is learned externally as the person grows, and then migrates those feelings and principles inward, thus thinking it has come from within. Religion is assimilation. True spirituality is recognition of your place in the fabric of the universe, the gift of sentience bestowed upon you, the beauty of that gift, and the wonderful things that can be done with it.

How many examples of the failures of religions to peacefully coexist could I cite right now? I mean it's a fundamental crisis throughout the history of time and human "evolution."

Also, any Christian/Hindu/Muslim/any other religious representation that preaches hate in some form are still acting on the grounds that they represent their religion. That's the entire concept of religious extreemism. It's the fallacy of man combined with a pre-determined set of "rules," it'll never work.

I also don't consider myself atheist. I don't care what the definition of atheism is, count me against the grain on that one. The absence of religion is not, in and of itself, a religion in its own. In that regard, science would have to be considered a religion in this broad definition as science has explained creationism through theory.

I belong to my own religion, one where I look objectively at the obstacles and challenges of my life and strive to do the best I can without fear.

Maybe I'm a bit of a nihilist, or even contradictory, but I see the entire definition and need to lable someone's beliefs as, "ahem" stupid. Thus, (like my quote), let me find my own "god" and broadly define it as I see fit.

Anyway, I don't want to stray off topic. As this is a place for quotes.

But I do understand and respect your points

…Allow yourself the luxury of doubt and view doubt as a luxury; view it as a kind of mental hammock that you can string and lie down in…

there are so many things in our culture that force upon you the idea that you should make up your mind, that you should know everything and I think particularly at the moment, if you look at all these questions, religion remains incredibly divisive… and kind of..overpowering peoples questioning about the nature of religion; the nature of god, all of these sort of things-these kind of metaphysical questions don’t go away, whatever the philosophers say.

I think people view doubt as a kind of negative state but for me, doubt is a luxurious state because it’s a state of being open to things…

We have had both sides shared from "non believers" and could argue the detriment of christianity and most religeons. I will add a quote from epicurus:
"is god willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is omnipotent. Is he able but not willing? Then he is manevolent. Is he both willing and able? Then wence cometh evil? If he is neither willing nor able? Then why call him god"

And one more from an unknown.
"Religeon is like a penis. Its fine to have one, but please dont whip it out in public and start waving it around. And please refrain from trying to shove it down my kids throat."

" Let us toast to animal pleasures, to escapism, to rain on the roof and instant coffee, to unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music and warm bodies and contraceptives...and to the 'good life', whatever it is and wherever it happens to be."~Hunter S. Thompson

What you do has very little importance, and it's very important that you do it.

So who ever told you life was fair? ~herbavore's mom

Never neglect the little things. Never skimp on that extra effort, that additional few minutes, that soft word of praise or thanks, that delivery of the very best that you can do. It does not matter what others think, it is of prime importance, however, what you think about you. You can never do your best, which should always be your trademark, if you are cutting corners and shirking responsibilities. You are special. Act it. Never neglect the little things

Herb lol i heard that alot growing up and if we r sharing quotes from our parents i want to leave one that i heard from my dad every time i was mad about insignificant things as a little kid. My dad would say to me "josh, look at what you are upset about. If this insignificant ordeal is going to make you that upset, life is going to kick the shit out of you". Its wierd cause it didnt really sink in until he died a decade later and life felt like it really kicked the fuck out of me. does anyone remember the first time they had opiate withdrawl and u truely understood the terms "kicking" and "cold turkey" it was like that i truely understood what he was saying, but it was too late to tell him. But on a lighter note remember when your parents would say "the world doeant revolve around u" well when i was 16 i got a fake ID so i could go skydiving there was just no way i was waiting till i was 18. So when i jumped we were the first people out and so we didnt even stand up me and the instructor just rolled out the door, in that moment time stopped, and as we rolled thru space at 13,000 feet i remember thinking " fuck u mom it sure does look like the world revolves around me from this point of view"

Not seen that before. Like it too, so true. Such a simple statement, so many layers to it and so much depth.

So who ever told you life was fair?

-herbavore's mom =D

And you to your kids in their turn, and they to theirs, and so on and so on. ;) Universal mum speak that is! There must be some kind of secret, oral tradition come down through the ages that women must be let in on when they get pregnant or something? Either that or you all secretly get issued with the exact same book of useful words and phrases as you come out the maternity ward? No other explanation? :sus:

"And God himself did darken the skin of all the sinners
that they might be recognised and shunned by the clean sheep of his flock.
And therefore no man of colour may enter into the Lord God's True Church
And Yay, So I have Spoken, Let it so Be!"

Joseph Smith (First Prophet of the Mormon Church)

And Yay I tell you, verily I say unto you, that a vision has come to me directly from the Lord our God!
He saith unto me that the Lord God will no more mark sinners by the colour of their skin. Yay, even if a man is blackest of the black, if his deeds are clean then he is clean in the sight of the Lord thy God. No more will men with the misfortune of darkness to their skin be kept from the one True church. Even these dark skinned men and their dark skinned wives and their dark skinned children, shall now be so blessed in the one True Church of the Lord they God! Yay let it be known from this day forward that even dark skinned men are washed clean and be as white as snow before the eyes of the Lord. Verily I say this unto you this day, as revelation has been visited upon our one true prophet who has made it known through his voice, these wishes of the Lord thy God.

Brigham Young

(Revealed by the prophet of the Mormon Church approximately six months after the Civil Rights movement was accepted in parliament at the time of Martin Luther King, not long after blacks were given permission to vote, sit up the front of the bus, receive an equal education, equal pay, and use public amenities, etc etc. Miraculously the prophet received a revelation from God at this time, informing him that blacks could now hold the 'priesthood' and be equal members of the Mormon church. Remarkable timing, eh?)

Whaa?? Bee in my bonnet?? Who me?! ;-)

This next one is interesting considering it was said by the CEO of Intel, Andrew S Grove. "Only the paranoid survive."
