WTF is up with Vanilla Extract??

There are 2 types of people that drink vanilla. Teenagers who can't legally buy real booze, and desperate alcoholics.
Been there, done that.

Have also drunk mouthwash and hand sanitizer (ethanol). More than once. All were situations wherein I was broke or, more commonly, was shaking so violently that I had to get some kind of alcohol into.my system to stabilize somewhat before I could go the store for real booze.

Alcoholism ain't pretty.

god that mouthwash/hand sanitize is some real shit. have never had more of a wakeup call about my alcoholism than drinking mouthwash, puking, and drinking more to avoid WDs AGAIN

Ingesting a lot of vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde) will temporarily inhibit enzymes that metabolise aldehydes (eg ALDH).
Combined with the increased levels of acetaldehyde from ethanols metabolite, you'll probably get the formation of psychoactive salsolinol and tetrahydropaveroline (based on dopamine), and possibly others based on serotonin/tryptamine.

Acetaldehyde (ACD) is a highly reactive compound that reacts with several endogenous catecholamines to form biologically active compounds. With regards to research addressing alcohol use disorders, the compounds that have been of interest fall into two main classes: 1) the tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids (THIQs), which are formed through the direct and indirect interaction of acetaldehyde with monoamines (dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) and 2) the tetrahydro-β-carbolines (TBCs), which are formed through the condensation of acetaldehyde with the indoleamines (tryptophan and tryptamine). The most commonly investigated THIQs, tetrahydropapaveroline (THP) and salsolinol (SAL), have been detected in the brain following the administration of alcohol.

As for the proper more expensive full-spectrum vanilla extract:

Vanilla as a psychoactive:
Furthermore, this antinociceptive effect of vanillin may be mediated by alpha2-adrenergic and opioid receptors...

As described above, vanillin may bind to the vanilloid receptor in the same manner as eugenol and thus produce an analgesic effect and a muscle relaxation effect.

Vanillin's antidepressant activity could be due to the agonistic action at α2 adrenergic or opioid receptors or due to the antioxidant property.
