Would you date a mentally ill person?

I remember reading a survey by some newspaper a lil while ago, and it found that being mentally ill is one of the biggest turn off ever...

Would you date someone with one?

I'm not being judgmental and my mental health is far from great but I have met some people with certain disorders and I just feel... afraid of them... probably just because I don't know how to react to their behavior

what are your thoughts?
 
hmm it was kinda extreme bipolar I was thinking of.. but I would also like to hear peoples opinions on whatever the disorder is, and whether people would give them a shot or just totally pass over them cus of conditions they have
 
It depends on the person. How they deal with it. How serious it is.
I have a friend who is very bipolar and it stresses me out just to be around her, I could never date her. But something else may be better to deal with.
 
I dated a guy who had paranoid schizophrenia. It was alright as long as he took his meds. When he didn't he'd be hearing voices and having conversations with squirrels. He also thought someone bugged the house. When I think of it he was the best lover I ever had but that probably has nothing to do with being a crazy.
 
ALL of the girls I've dated have been some level of addicts, and had at least one inane, but serious bizniz phobia, just over half had Some variant of depression, in a quarter of those, it was Bipolar, and about 15% total have had some sort of psychotic disorder.

Who cares imo, its whole person that matters.
 
I will say this, that there is no chance in hell I would ever date a girl with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). She would have to be so heavily medicated and sedated that my being physically intimate with her might constitute rape... and so, yeah, that would be a no-go for me.
 
I once dated an extreme bi-polar chick, she was a sex freak.

I see no reason not to, as long as they have the disorder under control and it doesn't negatively affect our relationship, sure why not?
 
Yes I have and I probably will again. They were depressed, had anxiety/panic issues, avoidant personality disorder, and I had crushes on women who were either bipolar, had depression issues, and some who had drug addiction/substance abuse issues.

The men who I dated who were depressed did take meds, see a therapist/shrink, and this one guy I briefly dated refused to acknowledge that he even had any issues with depression or anxiety when he'd talked to me a bit about them but I stopped dating him but not because of that.

its not really a turn off. it depends how bad it is.
i have dated a bipolar guy. = epic fail haha he as severe
then borderlines ( two of them ) they are difficult.
but my fiance was managable.

then. i have OCD (severly bad case) along with panic disorder and depression...
 
Of course it depends on the symptoms, but I know perfectly healthy individuals who are a nightmare to date so some shade of grey is allowable. If I have to draw a line some where it would be never date any girl who likes to wear the skin of her victims.
 
Hells to the no. I don't need to wake up with my boobs cut off at the end of the day.

The chronically depressed ones really get on my nerves. I feel sorry for people to a point, but I would get extremely annoyed to wake up to some guy telling me life is horrible every day. That would get old really fast.

ETA: Oh, and mood swings. Um, no. My sis has severe mood swings. When she is in her mood, she treats me (when I'm here) and her husband like total shit. She is nasty, mean and just looks for reasons to talk down to you. It is crazy. I really think she has mental issues, but I have no idea what they are. The only reason I put up with it is because I can let it go and she is my sister.

She often complains that she can't make friends and I don't have the heart to tell her that she is just sheer evil and mean and people don't want to deal with that shit if they don't have to.

When she is in a good mood, SHE IS SO MUCH FUN. I LOVE her when she is in a good mood, but when she is in a bad mood, she is really mean and nasty. I have no idea how her husband deals with it, but she is also in a much better mood when he doesn't work at night.

My experience with my sister has taught me that I never want to get involved with anyone who has extreme mood swings. Ever.

been there, done that. I think schizophrenics are a no-no. Anything else would depend on the specific person that I'm dealing with, but I wouldn't want to bring those kids into the world.
 
What fun would dating normal girls be? You need to have something to work on in a relationship. But, be careful, Bi-polar is an STD too.

Oh, and CoffeeDrinker, if you read this post and get an urge to facepalm, please do me a favor and dip your hands in superglue first.

Yes.. but only because it is required of me as a human being, biologically speaking (reproduction). Otherwise, no.. I wouldn't date 99% of the population, because that is really how many people are mentally ill in our society. No seriously. People put on this facade that they are normal and believe that just because they can function in society they are not mentally ill. But get talking or get to know anyone and soon enough it becomes apparent they are ill at some level. I admit that in myself too by the way.
