I was reading what raz said in that surrogacy thread, and i was wondering how many people live with the fact that they wont be continuing their last name. One of my friends and her sister are the last in the line for their last name - assuming they both marry.

My cousin kept her last name, but that was to avoid getting the last name "Mcdougal"

I tend to agree. My sister has had 4 kids. I think her dedication to popping out kids has more than made up for me being gay and my brother hooking up with a woman who can't bear children.

So, will your [last] name echo accross the ages?

Discuss.

No :(

We have a first-generation hyphenated surname. My brother has a son, but his bitch girlfriend decided the son's name would only be part of the hyphenated surname.

So, instead of being Smith-Jones, it's just Jones. Well, not Jones, but another very common surname.

Makes my blood boil :| My children have my husband's surname (I kept my name when we got married) and I have a younger sister who will presumably have difficulty passing her name along.

Roar!

Nope.

Because I am the last in line in my very small family, the only way that my surname would survive is if I keep my maiden name when I get married, or if I have a son & give them a double barreled surname, but again this wouldn't be keeping my proper name.

passed on already, I've got a son with my last name even though me and my g/f aren't married and i've got a little bro who isn't gay, so no worries there so far.

No, sadly mine won't.

Dad only has two daughters - me and my sister. I'm changing my name when I get married in 4 months; I haven't spoken to my sister about this but I'm pretty sure she'll be changing hers when she gets married too.

Dad does have a half-brother, but I'm not sure if he has the same last name as us. If so, there could be a chance there because he has a son.

I will still always use my last name for professional purposes (ie. freelance writing, or if I ever write a book) though. It's my little piece of 'me' and I would want it stamped on anything I did which was creative.

Yes.

My daughter has my surname, even though her dad and I were together when she was born.

He was never very reliable. And I guess deep down I knew that may not ever change.

I also have a younger brother [18] who will presumably pass the name onto the next generation :).

Luckily for my folks, i have a brother - who will marry, and i'm sure he will force his last name onto his unsuspecting bride.

I think it will as my brother is getting married soon and I think they will have children after they finish touring Australia. They seem like that kind of couple.

As for me doing my part - doubtful, but who can really tell.

And obviously my sister won't be able to carry the torch, patricentricity and all that.

I'm kind of glad. We're the only ones in Australia with this last name as far as I can discern and there's not that many people in Germany with it either.

Yeah. I really doubt it's going to die off for a long time yet, which is part of the reason why i wanted to change my surname when I was younger.

Yes

Eventually it will be the only name in existence. My name is going to take over the entire world.

Mu Ha Ha =D =D =D

Without a doubt. This comes from having a rather......large family.

Seven kids, six of us boys!

I'm not sure i'll be continuing this tradition however....let everybody else do the breeding!;)

My Sister and I. Tsk tsk. :)

(thanks Mum)

I know, but "my sister and I", always sounds so plummy and posh. Like "May I borrow your pen?" instead of "Can I borrow your pen?". I wrote "me and my sister" because that's how I'd say it. ("Me and me sister" would have been worse ;) ). Bugger grammar anyway, we're not in My Fair Lady ;)

Looks like our family name is gonna die. My dad has only one brother (his 3 sisters took up their husbands' surnames) who only has one daughter (so no continuation there) and I've got one brother who really doesn't look like he'll ever marry. But guess I can't say for sure ey. Our surname is a really crap one anyway won't be too sad to see it go. If I ever get married I'd happily take up my husband's surname unless its ends up sounding pretty bad like Julia Goulia haha (like in the Wedding Singer). But nothing really can with my name.

Haha I was just joking SLM it's just everytime I say it that way or see it written I hear my mother's voice in my head correcting it. Issues I know...
