Why sulfur?

When the 2-CT compounds find their way into the 5-HT2a, why does the sulfur cause such strong visual effect? It is obviously larger, and capable of multiple oxidation states, but the bulkiness is nothing that can't be mimicked by alkyl groups and the oxidation states not relevant in a covalent bond. It is more electropositive than oxygen, but less than a plain alkyl group. Whats the deal?

maybe it's the way it probably inhibits mao. a lot of sulfur compounds are also enzymatic inhibitors.

Perhaps I am aiming the wrong way with the question...Is there any reason for it to act more prominently in the visual cortex vs. other psychedelics?

I would highly doubt it has much to do with mao inhibition, can't see why this would generate more visuals.

^why are you so sure that all of the 2C-T-x series causes such strong visuals compared to the rest of the 2C-x series? i know that 2C-T-7 is renowned for its visual effects, but what about drugs such as 2C-T-4 or 2C-T-21 which dont seem to cause strong visuals at all?

/i have never done any of the 2C-T-x drugs before btw, i just base these coments on what ive read about these compounds.

The way i'd expect it creates more visuals (if indeed they do) is simply their effect on MAO.
MDMA isn't a very potent psychedelic at all (very poor 5-HT2A affinity), yet it still seems to increase the strength of psychedelic trips ... *ponders*

Correct me if I'm wrong but psychedelics do not 'act in the visual cortex.' There is some mention (via a google search) that HT psychs inhibit the visual cortex, but I can find zero studies supporting that.

Does anybody know of any studies that support the claim they target the visual cortex?

I think a more interesting question is: what is it about sulfur that causes the 2C-T's and their corresponding amphetamine counterparts to have such a wide range of reported effects and effective dosages?

From PIHKAL entry for 2-CT-4:
Some observers are overwhelmed with colors and visual activity; others volunteer their absence.

How would the MAO system generate the fantastic visuals? Any normal MAOI doesn't do this and even a drug like 2-CB in combination with Harmaline/Harmine doesn't cause outstanding visuals, from personal experience.

I am not to familiar with the structural components of the brain so perhaps my asking about specific areas of interaction are naive. Lets leave the original question open at least.
