Why isn't mitragynine (Kratom) scheduled?

What's the reason that this euphoric substance, called mitragynine, which has affinity to opioid receptors and can be found in the Kratom plant isn't scheduled already?

They probably dont think it is that bad of a threat yet, I mean only in the last couple years it has become very popular online, atleast I never heard that much about it before.

It will be difficult for the DEA to schedule mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine because it isn't closely enough related (structurally) to other scheduled drugs. Therefore the scheduling process will have to take place in the legislature. The same kind of thing is going on with Salvia.

Yeah exactly. There is not enough hype over the drug yet and honestly, a very small percentage of the population even knows about it, let alone the smaller amount that abuses it. It will have to gain some media attention at least before they decide to schedule it. Plus it isnt a powerful drug and there are a lot harder drugs they have to worry about.

why should they have to worry about any of them?

alcohol and tobacco aren't scheduled, and they currently have no accepted medical uses in the united states, they have high risk for abuse and are extremely habit forming.

and between the two alone, half a million americans die each year.

if "they" have to worry it should be about those two drugs, but they shouldn't have to worry about any of them because it should be a health issue not a criminal justice issue and its also a part of our civil liberties to take whatever we want into our bodies as long as we don't harm anyone else or violate anyone elses rights.

lyserg - what do you think is stronger codeine or kratom? what about Lyrica (pregabalin) or kratom?

The reason that the government doesnt "worry" about drugs like alcohol and tobacco, is because these are the ones that are taxed. They made laws forcing the tobacco and alcohol companies to put health warnings on their products, but meanwhile, the tax dollars are still rolling in.
While everything you said about the health issues concerning alcohol and tobacco are true, using them is a choice that is made by the consumer alone. Some of the leading contributors to the war on drugs are the major beer breweries, because they know that if marijuana were legalized, it would be a major blow to their business.

Sssshhh! 8)

Seriously though, it's probably hard to create media hype around. It's not psychadelic so you can't freak people out with that idea. You can compare the effects to opiates to try and scare people but it's gonna be hard to find some deliscious overdose stories. The worst you'd find is people throwing up and nobody cares about that.

Not sure what got it banned in Aus.

I'd like to know that as well - it seems that a lot of experiance reports I read online about things are rather... overhyped... for whatever reason. I haven't done heroin in 2 months and wonder if kratom would cut through whatever tolerance I have left, and if it's not stronger than codeine, I don't see a point in it at all.

Why don't they tax ALL of the drugs? Would that make them lots more money and we know our government could use all the effin' money it can get

So they put health warnings on stogs and alc, why not with all illicit drugs just like with pharms? Pharms are so widely abused now its probably more like a kid will pop or snort a pill in high school than smoke a joint (almost). So why not tax it all, make it all legal?

I know you agree with me, and i agree with you about big tobacco and big alcohol having their vested interest in the war on drugs b/c it would cut down on their sales, but then again why can't Marlboro grow / manufacture marijuana and make insane profits off it?

If there is money to be made why are big business not trying as hard as they can to get pot legalized so they can grow and sell it just like with alc and tobacco? My theory is that people like you or me or anyone in the entire planet, besides those in the north and south pole (if there are any) can grow marijuana quite easily. It is a weed you know.

So maybe they are fighting to keep the war on drugs going because they know a safer, medicinal and recreational drug that is massively popular that can be made in a few months with some CFL's, dirt and love, by anyone in this country might hurt their business, but as someone responded to that idea before....

americans are lazy and won't want to grow their own pot just like they don't grow their own tobacco or brew their own beer. but for some reason marijuana cultivation, to me at least, seems completely different. its a high in its own unique way. not that i would know.

i guess i got off topic, and now i don't know what the topic even was anymore. ok let me check...

oh ok, why the gov't doesnt "worry" about alcohol and tobacco.

[cliff notes version of the above]

You say its because they are taxed, alc & tobaccy, thats why the gov't doesn't worry so i guess my question to you is, wouldn't they stop worrying about every other drug if they legalized them all, put safety warnings on, had age restrictions and taxed the hell out of them? And wouldn't their be some big business out there that can reap insane profits from legalized drugs?

I've confused myself now. 8(

not to hijack but I've heard it compared to hydrocodone many a time

what if you have tolerance to ops?

i've heard taking it to potentiate oxy or hydro works quite well, is this true?

No. Apparently at the moment I made this topic I was rather curious why the substances with clear abuse potential haven't already been scheduled - and took Kratom as an example.

Kratom is definitely better/stronger than codeine assuming you do enough. Kratom is one of my favorite opiates actually, for me it can be more fun than even the rushy fentanyl. (no tolerence here)

Kratom isn't scheduled because it sucks. The only thing it is good for is a mild opiate withdrawl. Getting high from it has absolutely no euphoria. Actually, it kinda reminds me of Darvocet. If you have any opiate tolerance, forget it...you won't feel a thing.
