Why does alcohol make people assholes ??

^ I was asking Nozphexezora to expand on that though. Specifically alcohol? And if so, why do you think alcohol use (or misuse) particularly is a gauge of self control compared to other substances or addictive behaviours?

Well we've basically evaluated that alcohol emphasises our characteristics, it is just a matter of self-control not to make us do immoral actions that we wouldn't do, but perhaps consider, during sobriety. For example, just about every time I get drunk I do something stupid which I know I wouldn't do during sobriety because, unlike when I'm drunk, I have the self-control not to do it. One of which involves me yelling at a friend for trying to invite this person over who hates me (and vice versa) right in front of me via phone - in my car. It was obviously a rude thing for him to do, but I went at it unreasonably because I lacked self-control at the time. As such, alcohol serves as a test to our self-control based on what we would consider, and whether we would do it or not; hence why I said that alcohol is a reflection, or testament, to our self-control. It may impair our ability to control ourselves - but, on that note, we've also concluded that alcohol isn't solely a valid excuse for our bad decisions made while intoxicated, and that our consequences are still equal regardless of whether we're sober or not.
Sorry if I didn't explain it as well as you expected, but that's the resolution I drew after reading through the thread.

^ It's all good, it wasn't that it wasn't explained as well as I expected, I was just interested in exactly what you meant.

Doesn't that somewhat contradict the idea that alcohol is a reflection of our self control though? A test maybe, but surely if the extent of your self control changes when you drink, then your self control whilst drunk is not a true, or at least total, reflection of your self control.

I do believe that alcohol has inherent effects that lower self control regardless of your sober personality, so I think perhaps a better indication of self control would be whether or not one continues to drink, after realising that the disinhibitory effects of alcohol are causing them negative consequences.

Yes, but alcohol isn't responsible for our actions, we are; instead, alcohol is merely an influence on us.

I'll agree with that, but I still think we should hold responsibility for our actions regardless of our mental state.

The times I've got myself into the most trouble is when I've mixed drinks. I know, it seems absurd, but the effects of alcohol are definitely enhanced (worsened?) when different "types" are consumed.

edit: Is this placebo? It sure doesn't seem like it. Is there any pharmacological reason for "mixing drinks" compounding the effects of ethanol?)

The time that turned me off getting drunk I drank (no quantities here) Jack, red-wine, beer and cask white wine. I wound up at the casino (this is incredibly unusual for me. Fuck, it should be for everyone), got kicked out by twelve bouncers, went down to the carpark and stole someone's shitty pushy, proceeded (attempted) to ride home without a helmet, and the inevitable occurred.

Yay to broken ribs, a bruised lung and lung infection. That and the shame of realising I went to the casino was enough to turn me off getting "smashed" forever.

In any case, I was a freaking "asshole" that night, and deserved all I got. Getting blind drunk is the problem. Not alcohol itself. It's just a shame that getting blind drunk is an accepted behaviour in Australian society.

im so glad i posted this ^.^ it was more i was pissed off then had a curious question , and so much came out it :)

Alochol turns off the part of the brain that is where rational actions are formed .

It has been said a sober mans words are a drunk mans actions .

Somtimes i love the rush of ....remembering that i said fuck it. E.g. i fucking hate mcdonalds and despise the shit, but my friend eats it all the time and i dis him for it, yet one drunken night out i hyped it up all night that we were going to mcdonalds after the pub, we did, i got 3 double cheese burgers and was laughing hysterically on the bus on the way home while eating them. Then i spewed them up and had that weird mcdonalds taste/smell thing all though my mouth and regretted it, but having a laugh on the bus was sweet.
Unfortunately i get suckered into my own shitty ideas while drunk a fair bit, skinny dipping in some random mansion pool would be another.
Always the regrettable outcomes, but meh im not harming anyone atleast.
Made me realize how gambling while drunk is a terrible idea.

Your gambling is affecting you and your immediate others ;) the govt ads told me.

I remember watching a doco on UK tv where a woman took 6 shots of vodka over the space of 30mins while they mapped her brain for cognitive function.

Once the grog had taken full hold her cognitive function was halved. Wish I could remember the name of the doco. Anyway food for thought.

Funnily enough my mate posted this. He's now locked up due to drinking and mixing it with xanax.

Have not read reply's, but I believe if you're an asshole when drunk, then you may have issues you might not even know about. The majority of people do enjoy it socially without problems.

Anyone care to add to that or criticize it :p

i agree, i dont see people who i consider to have the shit together getting paralytic drunk

i kind of feel like when people get really drunk and get violent etc its kind of their true nature coming through, and then they can say "it was the beer" but i think thats an excuse tbh

Even with all its faults, If I had to limit myself to one drug for the rest of my life it would with out a doubt be alcohol.

^ + 1 I reckon, if cannabis were legal I probably would consider that but given I find cannabis anti social and drinking is social I still think I would go with the piss. It really is an under rated drug amongst illicit drug users I reckon, almost like a lot of us resent the fact it is legal or something... For me personally, no other GABAergic drug is particularly close to as pleasurable as alcohol is.
