why do we do drugs?

I think using drugs everyday is another way to live the life, i mean there are many others things to do and we chose this one, the smartest thing u can do is to learn how to live with them.
im 22 y.o and i smoke weed the whole day, and i dropp pills, use coke, lsd, etc on weekends,, like tobacco smokers use to do; and i'm working, studying, partying as i used to do when i wasnt on drugs, as a normal guy.
I dont know if ^^could answer ur question.

Entertainment, socialising, music etc are all made better by drugs IMO. I like all drugs except for weed.

Self-medication; to replace problems by a more acceptable problem.
Ofcourse I can read books about meditation, communication, relaxing. But I am lazy and cynical.

There are a few reasons I can think of why I do drugs….but I would first like to say that I don’t think life would be meaningless without drugs. I would probably be having a lot more sex and breaking a lot more girlies hearts…lol. But seriously…here’s the list.
1. I have so much free time on my hands why not spend it in an altered state of mind…For christs sake drug are FUN!!!
2. I'm Young, I thought this is what I’m supposed to be doing so I can rave about it later on in my life when I go out to dinner with my old friends…lol
3.I really can’t think of a better thing to spend my money on….why not spend it on something that makes you feel good and give you an awesome time?
4.ALL of my friends do them. It’s cool …haha!
5.Drugs (referring to opiates) really make life better…everything is always warmer, happier, and problems are better solved.
6. The #1 reason? Drugs like LSD and ecstasy open new doors in your mind to experiences you can honestly not have unless you do these drugs. I really think I am a better person for experiencing hallucinogens and MDMA. I’m a writer, what can I say? There’s so much inspiration behind drugs like these, why wouldn’t somebody want to do them…
*NOTE* I AM however a strong believer in moderation…getting killed is NOT cool.

Everything in moderation is not bad at all, but when something takes control of your life you have to take a step back and look where ur at. Control the drugs and if they don't control u it's all good.
I smoke pot most days and roll on the weekends. It opens new doors in my head and I have a different few on life then before I started using drugs.
But cause everyone is different and has a different personality we all do it for different reasons.
Keep it real.

You're on the right track, guys - just hang in there long enough for all to become clear. And relax, please relax.
Cheers, love and purest empathy to you all. :)

The ''dont let it control your life'' is BS, with all respect. While not-high u think about being high so much, if not constant. So it may not control your life, but @ least it controls your toughts, well, for me it does :S
I kinda have a love/hate relationship with drugs. Altough the last months the 'hate'-part is getting bigger 'n bigger but still i use. Just ask yourself while you're being high: ''is this worth all the shitty things around it'' etc. etc.
But on the otherhand life is so boring without drugs. I can do a weekend without getting high but it just feels good to escape all the stress and do someting fun with your mates...
keep your head clear while u can :)

I do drugs to:
Mellow out.
Look at things another way.
Increase staminia, energy, alertness.
I have also used drugs to:
Escape.
Control.
Alienate.

I think the main reason people do drugs is because they have cognitive thought. Humans have done drugs in some form or other since the beginning of their existance. And as for there being plenty of happy people around who don't do drugs, sure there are, but take a closer look at them. You'll see their crutch will be religion or food, loving someone who doesn't love them back, co-dependance, power, whatever...it's a big ol cliche but nobody's perfect.

Cats don't seem to have cognitive thought and yet they are quite willing to do catnip.
Drugs are fucking fun! They make you feel good, self-confident loved etc.. All those things we strive to achieve in the outside world but are fucked over by evolution. This is clearly part of the issue.
They are reinforcing. They stimulate brain regions involved in reward behavior so they make you want to do more of them (whether or not this making you want to do more of them is linked to the funness of them is unclear).
We have way more time on our hands then we are used to evolutionarily. We are set up to be always in a potentially life threatening situation now we live till 80. Is it any wonder we turn to chemical modifications to fill the time? I mean really what the fuck else is there?
Ohh yah we can't live with the emotions as they are given to us because these emotions are designed to make us stay alive and reproduce not be happy. An e-ed out raver wouldn't stand a chance in the wild...but it sure is *way* more pleasant than the emotional stress and anxiety which are our genetic birthright.

i think different people do drugs for different reasons, obviously.
some people do drugs largely to escape their lives. this is especially true of people who are psychologically addicted to drugs. people who always want to be fucked up and hate being sober, IMHO, can't handle reality and living their lives. these kind of people often give drugs a bad name, sadly.
some people use drugs for fun. i would say at least half of all drug users (with most of the other half in the escapist category) use drugs for their recreational value. for thses people, drugs are just another way to spend free time -- like watching movies, going rollerblading, playing cards. another form of entertainment. as long as these people don't start abusing drugs for their escapist qualities and use drugs responsibly, i think recreational drug users are pretty harmless.
then there are some, though very few, people who use drugs almost as a scientific experiment. these people are often highly intelligent, often spiritual, and doing drugs is about expanding their boundaries and their concept of reality. true drug users of this type will only try a certain drug a couple of times to get a feel for it, but then they get bored and move on. though they may enjoy being high, the main purpose of their drug use is to examine themselves, their minds, and their surroundings while in an altered state of consciousness. an example of such a person would be the great chemist and philosopher alexander shulgin.
all of the three types have a little bit of the other two types - every person has a degree of escapism, a degree of fun-loving, and of scientific curiosity. but generally, i believe that drug users can be categorized as above.

because i (sad as it may be) cant imagine life witout em. i cant imagine what kind of person id be without past use. and i think its all for the good.

Ja, drugs changed my life definetly, i can say my mind is more open, and i think so diferent as i thought some years ago.

Yes and no fairnymph. I agree lots of people do drugs for escapism. In fact it might even be argued that *all* people do drugs for escapism though I am not entierly sure what we mean by escapism.
Still the vast vast majority of people aren't escaping by abusing anti-psychotics or other unfun drugs. In fact almost every escapits (myself included) wants to escape the unpleasent aspects of life which means they do drugs for fun. Although there are probably a far number of people in OD who do them to avoid withdrawal.
Sure there are some people who honestly do drugs for scientific research. It might still be argued they enjoy scientific research. Still people like shulgin really aren't an example of this. He seems to really like psychedelics and he keeps 'experimenting' with them. Its kinda like doing research into what kind of opiate gets you the most euphoria.
People who abuse things they know, or suspect very strongly, of being unpleasant (i.e. thorazine and I do know such people) get alot more credit on the drugs for intellectual exploration than someone like shulgin does.

My brother says it's different every time he does something, well, yeah he tries a lot of different stuff, and it's the bad stuff he remembers most, not the good stuff, for sure. But I make it sound like he actually has more bad trips than good, which is just plain dumb, as far as I can see, or why would he keep doing them..? Anyways, he's been trippin' and shit for a few years, now, and man, seriously, if I thought it was killing him I'd just wrap my arms around him and carry him out of that whole scene.. I trust him, because I care about him, and he's my bro', but I also look out for him.. He does the same for me, too, and man, that just sums up for me why I used to do it, too..
* smiles in memory *
Makes me feel old when I think 'good old days', just like my dad says sometimes..

..beautiful,really..., but ummmmm, so why is it you do drugs exactly? LoL. :) I’m getting a vague picture here of why, well. maybe…...but in all actuality I have no clue what you are talking about in the majority your post…sorry :P

I do drugs simply because i can. Personally i think it is sad that we must take a psychedelic like LSD to expand our minds. society is to blame. simply for the amount of shit they have crammed in our heads.

I dunno if anyone has said this before, but whenever you are truly inquisitive as to why you do drugs you could read "Intoxication" by Ronald K. Siegel, Ph.D. He gives his theories on why we strive to get f***ed up. Could it be a basic human need, similar to food and shelter? That's his theory in a nutshell...

Nice fairnymph, i agree.
My rational thoughts want me to catogorize in 3, but I myself think I belong in 1 and 2.
A life without drugs? Hmz if you cant see yourself living without drugs hmz; then I think you have a problem.
Most people would be almost the same if they didnt (ab)used drugs, because they would use other methods of escapism, fun; then they would draw in big lines pretty much the same conclusions.
Drugs for exploring your mind? Knowing more then anyone who doesnt use drugs?
That's a mindbender, I would say that someone who uses and doesnt use know about the same. They have only different opinions about subjects. Doesnt mean any of em has the right opinion.
:)
