Disclaimer, the following post will be composed with use of stimulants, so forgive me for my less than cunning verbosity:
I have, over the last year or so, made a semi-serious effort to learning darts. Though showing moderate talent for most games of physical prowess I've tried, I'm naturally abysmal at this one, which really pisses me off, thereby motivating me to try and develop some at least reasonably effective technique. Despite throwing a retarded amount of time at the problem, far more than I would devote to any real life pursuit, my progression is exceeding slow. I guess I've made a little progress, over almost a year of tossing every time I smoke a cigarette and then some, but I still throw, at best, like a good beginner, despite that I am not.
One ray of hope, I have learned to play pretty well on stimulants, mostly methylphenidate and adderall or vyvanse. At first the difference was slight, but over time my stimmy-game has vastly out developed my sober one, it's almost scary how big of a difference it makes, like sober i'm throwing at 20 and hitting the wall, south of 19 or something, and on stims I can hammer any number i wish for periods exceeding an hour. Although I take vyvanse semi-regularly for add, and the therapeutic dose is plenty for darts, I'm not satisfied with the current state of affairs. Being ultra competitive, I only like to rely on drugs for serious things like life, not for trivial games of skill.
What gives? I've, more times than I can count, thought I figured out what I was doing differently, sought to replicate this, and failed miserably. One thing I'm sure it isn't is some kind of improvement in concentration, i can be barely paying attention and still throw much better on stims than with all the concentration I can muster sober, which is a respectable amount. I thought maybe it had something to do with improved, proprioception, it may still be the answer, but exercises to improve this outside drug land have yielded nothing.
I should add, if for some reason you're still reading, that this doesn't happen in any other sport (soccer, table tennis, etc.), i see only mild improvements which I can easily attribute to improved energy and concentration. Also, no other drugs help, alcohol, benzos, opiates, weed, lesser stimulants, etc are no use. It doesn't take much of a dose of dex to improve my game, and taking too much or taking other drugs in combo only detracts slightly. My best current theory is that it affects muscle tension, resulting in subtle but significant changes to my technique, but even videotape has not showed me any pertinent differences in motion.
Can someone shed some light on this sillyness so i can shut the fuck up already?
