Why are we here? V Philisophical Nonsense begins....

Hardly the oracle of philosophy, but very true.

If-you%E2%80%99re-not-making-someone-else%E2%80%99s-life-better-then-you%E2%80%99re-wasting-your-time%E2%80%A6-%E2%80%93-Will-Smith.jpg

A bit of Chuang Tzu to muddy the waters:

"Birth is not a beginning; death is not an end. There is existence without limitation; there is continuity without a starting point. Existence without limitation is Space. Continuity without a starting point is Time. There is birth, there is death, there is issuing forth, there is entering in. That through which one passes in and out without seeing its form, that is the Portal of God. The Portal of God is Non-Existence. Existence could not make existence existence. It must have proceeded from Non-Existence. And Non-Existence and Nothing are One... At the beginning there was nothing. Then life came, to be quickly followed by death. They made Nothing the head, Life the trunk, and Death the tail of existence, claiming as friends whoever knew that existence and non-existence, and life and death were all One."

Another of those threads which becaomes chock full of 'inspirational' quotes and happy-looking folk in Eastern costume?

I'll give it a miss.

Oh yeah, without a doubt.

It's partly because few people read each other's posts, and so we get endless rehashes of the same neo-hippie 'philiosophies', but far be it from me to knock it.

lol yeah I didn't look at a single post.=D

I just really agree with that quote, if there is anything that can truly be called a purpose to life then surely it is to improve the wellbeing of others around you.

The more unintelligent a man is, the less mysterious existence seems to him.
Arthur Schopenhauer

Religion is the masterpiece of the art of animal training, for it trains people as to how they shall think.
Arthur Schopenhauer

Money is human happiness in the abstract; he, then, who is no longer capable of enjoying human happiness in the concrete devotes himself utterly to money.
Arthur Schopenhauer

Raoul Vaneigem said:
But there are more truths in twenty-four hours of a man's life than in all the philosophies. Even a philosopher cannot ignore it, for all his self-contempt; and he learns this self-contempt from his consolation, philosophy.

After somersaulting onto his own shoulders to shout his message to the world from a greater height, the philosopher finishes by seeing the world inside out; and everything in it goes askew, upside down, to persuade him that he is standing upright. But he cannot escape his own delirium; and refusing to admit it simply makes it more uncomfortable.

My favourite philosopher.

"Make me one with everything" said the buddhist to the hot dog seller.

"Where is my change" he asked. "Change comes only from within" replied the hot dog seller.

You'd have to ask them i suppose ;). Is 'why' (or not knowing why) an artefact of thinking restricted by the time dimension? I've been in mental states where all the whys were just answered, and seemed so simple and obvious (and somehow benevolent); but as obvious as they seemed they couldn't transfer back to normal consciousness except as a few paradoxical statements that answered nothing - maybe the 'truth' or the 'why' can only be understood as koans and paradox (quantum physics hints at this) and that our normal minds are just too linear to grasp it, so it just sounds like mysticism? Or maybe thinking there is a why is itself the paradox.

Waffle aside, the answer is simple really: Love (or increase of information in physics terms)
