who i should go for in the NHL?

I recently got into the NHL. Im not American and i have no idea who to support? Any help?

detroit. because if detroit wins it all (again) then that means my favorite team (the columbus blue jackets) AT LEAST got eliminated by the best team. so technically they COULD have been the 2nd best team in the league. :\

This could be true-- but a team like Anaheim that is stuffed to the gills in talent with Getzlaf, Pronger, Marchant, Selanne and Hiller a rising star in the goal... That would be my pick.

But Columbus>>>>>>> Penguins

Go wings!!!!

I am a huge Anaheim Ducks fan so of course I would say go for the ducks. If I were you I would check out different teams and different players and see what sparks your interest.

You can go to the NHL site and watch highlights from this last season or go to You Tube and check out some older games. Just don't jump on the wings band wagon =p

wait, i thought we were discussing who you should go for in these playoffs, not for the entire seasons. :D

if that's the case, it's the jackets all the way. who doesn't love an underdog story? even though they've not been around as long as the other teams, they've gotten shit on by EVERYONE (and yes, they never earned much positive praise until recently), but how cool is it that the first year they finally make the playoffs (and mind you, they were the only NHL team to have never qualified for the playoffs until this year) stands almost as a tribute to their majority owner who died prior to this season. it's sad he didn't get to see them reach that goal, but what better way to honor the man that personally brought professional hockey back to ohio. columbus was about to be ruled out as an expansion team when john mcconnell stepped in and wrote a check and gave me a team to live my life vicariously through. =D

Thanks everyone. Anaheim is one of the teams i have heard of because of the movie... :)

Support small market teams and/or teams from Canada. Oilers, Flames, Sharks, etc.

this is a difficult question for me to answer, but interesting nonetheless. to be in your position is admirable, it seems that every sport out there I have the teams I follow, I have followed for a while and it's too hard to change by the time you have a little history with your team.

I have always pulled for the Pittsburgh Penguins. they have a winning history with guys like Jaromir Jagr behind them, and a flashy new offensive sensation in Syndey Crosby.

they are squaring off against the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup (the Finals), this year for the second year in a row. Detroit, like always, is heavily favored. Detroit is your perpetual winning team in the NHL, kinda like the New York Yankees of hockey.

plus, Pittsburgh's mascot is the best. for hockey, who or what can beat a penguin?!

Thanks for all the answers everyone. Ive yet to choose a team though. One more question; is Alexander Ovechkin the best player in the league?

arguably maybe...

ovechkin, crosby, and malkin are among the top three names that come to mind when mentioning 'the best player in the league today.' ovechkin is easily the best pure scorer, while crosby adds a bit more of a 2 way game (meaning he's good offensively AND defensively) and is more of a playmaker than a pure scorer. malkin is pretty much in the same boat as crosby.

then again, you have goalies that you can throw into the mix as well. henrik lundqvist (new york rangers), martin brodeur (new jersey devils), (boston bruins) and steve mason (columbus blue jackets) are all among some of the best around.

oh and you can't forget niklas lidstrom (detroit red wings), possibly the best defenseman in the game today. dion phaneuf (calgary flames) is also fucking solid.

awww thanks buddy! i was hoping maybe with mase in nets and osgood bein old, we'd be able to hang for a bit, but i should have known better! :D osgood, though old, has been solid in the playoffs (again) and the jackets just didn't show up until game 4. the wings are just goooooood. now if they can just hang in there and win 2 more!

It's all about the St. Louis Blues, 'cept the fact that we can't win a damn cup... lol

^ that's a great song. it gives me chills when i listen to it.

but the leafs SUCK! if you're goin for a canadian team or a storied franchise... take montreal. :D
