which substances are Neurotoxic?

OK after reading this post Im as confused as ever. I take benzo's ativan, xanax, klonopin for the last 7 years, please tell me they are not neurotoxic.

second it said anything that messes with the uptake of things is neurotoxic, Ive also been on and am ON effexor does this mean this is neurotoxic???

Third of all I can DIFFENTELY not be able to spell good but I CAN tell you that alcohol is neurotoxic, I watched my mom slowly kill herself with booze over two years (LUcky me I got to find her too!) and IM telling you its IS neurotoxic --in her last two years she was wack. forgot stuff all the time, did weird ass things, stole food from my fridge. I could go on and on but Im telling you she wasnt my mom and her brain wasnt functioning properly. If I could only understand the autoposy report I could tell you more but it goes way over my head in medical jargon.

Can someone please provide references for alcohol's alleged neurotoxicity? Sure the aldehydes its metabolism produces aren't very good for you, but where has it been specifically shown to be neurotoxic?

Its hard to find any source that says it isn't neurotoxic. its almost common knowledge...
neurotoxity due to the fact it kills brain cells i suppose.

is a few....

Alcochol is the leading cause of dementia.....

At the momment, i'm researching "how neurotoxic" it is.... which is hard to find a source for.
or the neurotoxity compared to other drugs.

Alcohol has been proven time after time to kill brain cells and if something kills grey matter in the brain...

That's not a reference.

In regards to Korsakoff's syndrome, that's due to B vitamin depletion through excess alcohol use, not from the alcohol itself.

Oh, I forgot I take firocet which has a barbitute in it. Is this neurotoxic --because I take at least 100-150mg per day, I dont want to be anything like how my mom was...........she was kooky in more ways than one, and Im telling you if I could post her autopsy report right here it would be proof of what alcohol did to her brain it was way more than the vit b diffenceny trust me.

thanks

How exactly would you know whether or not your mothers potential neurotoxic insult was caused by vit B1 deficiency or not?

because thanks, she didnt die of per say neurotoxicty but they DID do an autopsy report which DETAILED every section of her body and what was wrong with it, so yes, I pretty much know what was all fucked up with my mother when she died even though on record she died from ethenol poisoning.

Long term Benzodiazepine abuse can cause brain atrophy! (Psychol Med, 1987; 17: 869-73)

Provide your link, I would be very interested in reading about this if it is in fact true. Everything that I, and just about everyone else on both this board and people that I know personally, have read otherwise. Furthermore, the wasting away of the brain??! Some even say that benzodiazepine can serve as a neuroprotective. Lets see a link!

..and so what did her autopsy say was the cause of the neurotoxicity then?

That reference that JayJ supplied, its abstract doesn't lend one to believe that they found any cerebral atrophy.

Meanwhile, this more recent article, found no brain damage.

Computerized axial tomographic studies following long-term use of benzodiazepines.

Perera KM, Powell T, Jenner FA.

Computerized axial tomography was used to compare sex and age-matched groups of controls and long-term benzodiazepine users for evidence of cerebral atrophy. No statistically significant differences were found.

I agree. Where is the evidence for brain atrophy?

I wouldn't consider that a legit source. It isn't even written by a doctor or anything, just by some lady named Margaret Bell that sounds very paranoid because her friend died from benzodiazepine withdrawls. There have been many, many more reports written by actual doctors and people who research this field that claim benzodiazepines are not neurotoxic. I still, along with just about anybody else on BL or other legit resources, believe that benzodiazepines are not neurotoxic.
