Which benzo causes the least drowsiness and cognitive impairment that is best suited for pure anxiolysis and panic attack prevention?
I always thought diazepam was the most subtle, longest lasting, and most clear-headed of all the benzos, until I tried clonazepam for the first time the other night. It kicks in much more gradually, making you not feel like you are on a drug, and is quite effective for generalized anxiety without clouding your judgement as much as the "likeable" (quick onset, short duration) benzos tend to. It also lasts much longer than diazepam does, in terms of therapeutic anxiolysis, despite kpin's misleadingly shorter half life.
I know clonazepam is a hit-or-miss benzo, but it seems like for the people that it works for, it knocks anxiety and panic out of the ballpark.
Xanax obliterates a panic attack once it has begun, but is useless and counterproductive to take on a regular dosing schedule. It also tends to cloud my judgement and disrupt my thinking worse than equianxiolytic dosages of Valium do.
So, which benzo works best for you for getting your mind right but keeping it straight?
