Which drugs improve your capacity for musical expression?

I like to use simple stimulants to increase my actual guitar playing ability and on-the-spot improvisation. It works great for song writing as well if you can sit still for long enough.

Anything that gives me intense cevs makes listening to music more fun, although I listen to a lot of kvlt thrash metal so it's like an explosion of colors in my mind.

Just remember,

First it giveth, then it taketh away. At least that's the situation with opiates and creativity.

Yeah, definitely true. I play like crazy when I'm opiates but the next day after one day of use leaves me uninspired. This is amplified quite a bit if I have some sort of withdrawal.

I actually read this quote of yours when you first wrote it and it has been echoing in my mind ever since.

2C-B.

I've learned so much and am so creative while on it. It brings me to a state where I am tripping and creative but still functional enough to actually play bass. I learned how to flamenco strum and play a lot of Les Claypool (he got me on the bass, it is his responsibility) songs that I would have never picked up.

Although amphetamines are great too. I once made an entire song using two synthesizers in one night, with almost no prior knowledge of songwriting or synthesizers. I just sat in front of the manuals, read both of them cover to cover, and let it all flow out. The song is incredible, but since I have no real interest in being a musician I gave it to my GF. She is an incredible musician, all I ask for is credit on the track should she ever get her off her ass and put a record out there.

Although to be honest, with how consistently good she is, I don't think she has ever done anything as great as that one song of mine in electronics. She almost admits as much (and it is hard for her, if you ever saw this bitch on the piano she would blow you away), but it is obviously very hard for a career musician to admit to being topped by a guy who just does it as a hobby.

It was a one hit wonder, however. It took me three days to compose and I fell into such a trance that I'm not even sure how I really did it, I mean I created all my own sounds from scratch, matched the drums with the bass with the melody and made it change at all of the perfect moments, and I have to hear the song again to go "holy fucking shit, how the fuck did I do this?" I'm not a musician, but I do have my one hit wonder thanks to amphetamine. It was like the music was moving through me and being created by some higher being, not like I made the song myself.

people should try playing while sober. It'll do your audiences some good. And if you have no audiences...well that speaks for itself doesn't it?

Alcohol - I can't play for shit when I'm plastered, but some of the best lyrics I've written were when I was sloppily drunk, I find it easier to cut through the BS and write what I mean in that state.

Cannabis - I don't find it helps with creativity as much as other people are saying, but it does make playing more fun.

DXM - I thought the shit I was writing was inspired at the time. Sobered up and gave it a listen...and I was mistaken...

2C-I - This one is a winner. Still nice and clear headed, creativity punched up to eleven and my fingers just fly across the guitar.

4-aco-dmt - Similar to cannabis, doesn't seem to help or hinder but it makes it a hell of a lot more fun.

I find opiates dumb down my fingers way to much to make what's in my head real. I've played a couple shows on acid and that was something else! I'd have to say that coke brings out my best playing

I find meth productive for sketching, heroin for painting/colours, weed for music.

D X M no doubt, im a rapper and on dxm my mind just goes to a new place haha especially when I write, but any drug honestly I get in the zone

"you write your finest raps cuz you high? hah I write my finest raps cuz I'm fly..."

I forget who said that, but it made me laugh even though it's corny.

I'm just comin off a 3 month dope binge and wrote some of the sickest music in that time, but opiates, alcohol, and very low doses of benzos work best for me

i smoke cannabis when i'm playing music. it's not that i need to, but it helps me get right into the zone with little effort. it takes me right in, deep to the inspiration and the sound.

psilocybe mushrooms give me a mass of inspiration. i play so much better on shrooms, and i have really good ideas. i don't trip and play music as often as i smoke weed and play music, but on the infrequent occasions that i do, it always feels special.

LSD allows me to explore sound. i might not play the most coherent music on acid, but i can express so much with a single note - like going to the core of the note and ringing it through the valves in the amp. it's like a musical meditation, and gives me ideas for new playing techniques.

and i often enjoy writing songs on opiates. just float above my internal critic and let it flow.
