Which drugs improve your capacity for musical expression?

For musical expression enhancement I like the following:

Pot-opens me up to new musical ideas and allows me to take more chances

MDMA-while it makes playing a bit "sloppy" I really get into what I'm creating and some of it can be very creative

2c-i-nice mellow psychedelic that made playing clasical guitar a breeze..almost like stepping into a time warp in terms of "tuning in".

4-fa-gave me creative energy with out making my mind sloppy. Wrote some beautiful compositions on the keyboard while on this one

Cannibas! I smoked heavily through my teen years but that was mainly something I did to relax and ease my mind of everything(i wouldnt think/do anything just straight up chill) and also to help my appetite (I had none, then)

Recently Ive been tapering off a couple of things and I am filling what seems like an eternity in getting off of these other substances, with smoking tree.

Except only now I will paint artwork (its shitty but...still, Ive never been interested in oil painting before), and I will write down all of my out there ideas and review them when I'm not high, and most importantly I always indulge in all types of music & listen to the actual meaning of the song.

Just the other night I thought, I would love to be the artist of such exhilerating music that people would listen to & enjoy, I'm not saying it will go anywhere (lol) but, I have begun to write down all of my blazed thoughts into poetry and I would really enjoy- and perhaps look forward to [who knows], persuing making my own art, in the form of paintings & music!
Ive found it tremendously easier to write hidden messages, use metaphors, similes, personification, etc into my work. What I think is especially interesting is that I can accumulate the mixture of words so that they are more than words, and they go beyond the ears and have in depth meaning.

sorry I may be rambling...but as my buddies have always preached to me

Live free, blow tree

My best improvisational ideas always come during mushroom trips, however it can get rather hard to operate the mechanics of an instrument during the peak of a good trip. Marijuana definitely makes playing music more fun but I couldn't say that it makes me more creative.

For me, marijuana easily wins this one. Creativity and abstract thinking just flow out of me without much effort after a joint. It just seems to shatter all the creative barriers I have while sober, music just becomes such a natural thing. Psychedelics can have a similar effect for me but I feel weed is better because I still maintain a semi-clear headspace whereas psychedelics cause me to think a little too much for my own good, sometimes causing obsessive thought matters that lead to no productivity in the end. Mary jane will always be the one for me, nothing else could ever compare.

Doesn't it feel phony though? Isn't the real goal to be able to be creative on your own, without the use of mind alterers?
Well I suppose different goals for different people, but I don't like all this endorsement of opiates.
Sometimes in my hardest hours related to my drug use I can feel a battle between my clean self and my junkie self and I feel like my junkie self wants me to suffer for the sake of my art, so it does everything it can to make me think that the stuff I make on opiates are way better than the stuff I did sober. I think it's a trick of the mind just finding new ways to make you crave the drug.
You know the whole "sold his soul to the devil" thing? Well what if that's really referring to the creativity that comes after using opiates?
Now there's an idea!

I think being addicted to opiates will affect your ability to effectively create music over time. I think responsible use of opiates can help many people jam out really intensely on certain occasions, it definitely has this strongly positive effect for many. It is a difficult to describe experience... I feel it makes me connect with my instruments much more and be able to get in the zone 100% of the time. On my own, I get into this same zone sometimes, but not nearly every time.

I think the "sold his soul to the devil" aspect of music could easily be a reference to opiates. It is a perfect illustration of the situation and the risk involved.

Half a tab of LSD seems to boost my creativity while playing guitar. Enough of a conscious change without making me completely uncoordinated. Lately I've been having half and then spending hours just playing guitar :D

opiates and budd for sure, i always find every time i do i can understand and relate to whaqt im listening to. next thing you know im bobbing my head to some good underground hip hop from andre nickatina or typical cats

Everyone is different, but I have no idea how some of the people are saying "psychedelics" because when I'm tripping the only music i feel like making is like Animal from the muppets banging on shit and laughing at the noises it makes.

I find that getting high on opiates is by far the best, I am normally a pretty mediocre guitar player and pretty terrible bassist, but when i tie one off, I am so much more smooth, my scales are perfect - it almost seems like the pitch and tone I hear in my head are closer to what they are in reality when I'm on dope.

Great replies so far guys, keep em coming!

A related question - has anyone found that opiates help when creating other art like painting or writing? I haven't tried it myself yet, but I'm intrigued.

I am an architect and while opiates are great for when i am playing music, when I am sitting there thinking about creating an awesome fucking building, I'll just do it another day when I'm high.
I might have to redact my earlier statement - I have designed several wonderful projects while on hallucinogens - I would just drop a bit of acid, like 5-7 tabs and head down to the site the building was supposed to be built on and just kinda trip out and draw until my mind manifested the building I wanted at which point I would furiously draw so as not to lose my ideas.

- Marijuana
- Most classical psychedelics. I find in general, ergolines and phenethylamines work best because often times tryptamines cause a kind of "glitchy" distortion to the music - skips, etc - and the headspace can be confusing. Although, playing music on 4-aco-dmt is excellent. Morning Glory seeds, LSD, 2c-e, DOC, are all examples of excellent psychedelics for enhanced musicality.

Cannabis
LSD
Amphetamines
Opiates, certainly.

Just remember,

First it giveth, then it taketh away. At least that's the situation with opiates and creativity.
