I wouldn't go out into the bush with any of you people, it took a page and a half before someone mentioned taking FOOD...

As for the 'I'd rather die fighting' attitude - your loved ones don't need you to die on a battlefield, they need you close by, no matter what happens. I doubt very much that anyone here would send their son, boyfriend, father or brother out to 'defend' them or their way of life...
We've been lucky enough to have never experienced war first-hand -myself included - but from what I undersand, it ain't all guts & glory.
 
When going bush, you might like to consider not heading towards central Australia as there is a BIG ARSE AMERICAN MILITARY SPY BASE slap bang next to Alice Springs.
The US Spy base, also known as Pine Gap, has been around since the 1960s and makes Australia a nuclear target.
And if it does get hit by a nuke, depending on which way the wind is blowing, the fallout is going to reach at least one major Australian city.

'someone's gotta do it' is a pretty poor reason to go out with a gun and minimal training in the hope that you'll manage to shoot one person before your ass is handed to you by some 17 year old fighting machine with bayonettes for hands.
I understand that defense is something that unfortunately has to exist, but there just "has to be a better way!".
for me that better, short-term answer, way would be to skedaddle into the nearest cave network with refried beans, a guano-powered beat box and my burn of Lee Burridge.
