When do pop music lyrics become poetry ?

I
Pop acts have become more and more disposable in the last couple of decades I think...which isn't a bad thing. Part of the appeal of music for me is the novelty of listening to new, fresh music, without necessarily caring who made it or even knowing what they look like.

Thats exactly what i HATE. Hear some cheezy crap 50 times on the radio 1 week, wow it gets to number1 next week , and then neither the song or artist are ever heard from again.

THats not music, that just a cold business model to milk some younger kids of their pocket money. :sus:

That's what pop music is though. :D Music only becomes 'popular' because of deliberate promotion and exploitation. The internet is slowly democratising things though.

I can't honestly think of any tunes with lyrics that ever struck me as being particularly profound. Sure there is stuff that has resonated with me when I heard it at the time, or stuff that I could relate to, but I'm generally more interested in the musical qualities of the voice rather than the content of the lyrics. I generally prefer instrumental stuff, without lyrics placing a rigid meaning and emotional context on the track, so it's more open to individual interpretation and leaves space for your own thoughts and feelings that might be brought out or provoked by the music, which can be a genuinely profound experience sometimes...

Very true, I grant that he did some excellent songs but the level of reverence which he is accorded is well beyond his actual talent and smacks of right place, right time, strong personality. Most overrated artist in the history of popular music in my opinion.

Whoa, back up a minute jc, that period from Jan 65 to the end of 66 by Dylan is the most creative period anyones ever had in pop music. He did Bringing it all back home, Blonde on Blonde(double album) and Highway 61 including stuff like Like a Rolling Stone. Before then even the Beatles were only doing moon and june lyrics and they only managed to do Help, Rubber Soul and Revolver in the same time period - and that's with 3 writers.

Respect the Bob!

Will Oldham (Bonny Prince Billy) ... and Bill Callahan (now solo, but used to be Smog) are exceptionally good writers, and I think they're probably viewed as poets.

I like em both but I'm not 100% familiar with their complete discogs. Will have a listen this evening when I've got some chill time. Haven't played either of em for ages.I listened to his last album and liked it lots, not really poetry tho.

The Silver Jews' .. Dave Berman is classed as a poet I think, and it shows in his lyrics. Beautiful writing. Much better than Malkmus (<3 Malkmus tho )

You heard any Silver Jews stuff MDB?

I wish Sam was here, cause he's a huge Jews fan. He'd have a ton to say on this topic

I'm gonna pester him to come have a looksee. I really miss his posts here tons :(

Silver Jews - The Wild Kindness

I wrote a letter to a wildflower
on a classic nitrogen afternoon.
Some power that hardly looked like power
said I'm only perfect in an empty room.

Four dogs in the distance
each stands for a kindness.
Bluebirds lodged in an evergreen altar...
I'm gonna shine out in the wild silence
and spurn the sin of giving in.

Oil paintings of x-rated picnics.
Behind the walls of medication I'm free.
Every leaf in a compact mirror
hits a target that we can't see.

Grass grows in the icebox.
The year ends in the next room
It is autumn and my camouflage is dying
instead of time there will be lateness
and let forever be delayed.

I dyed my hair in a motel void
met the coroner at the Dreamgate Frontier
He took may hand said I'll help you boy
ff you really want to disappear

Four dogs in the distance
each stands for a silence.
Bluebirds lodged in an evergreen altar...
I'm gonna shine out in the wild kindness
and hold the world to its word.

my god do you ever open your ears - even its rather cheezier A side "Imagine". as simple as it is, it could not be more profound.

2 all of pink floyds the wall
no order to the rest
tons of stuff by Cohen, Bowie (Life oN Mars is out of this world), springsteen, beatles...i could go on

No i meant it had a very large hand in getting us back together, not that we almost did. Thankfully as I'm now an expectant dad with her by my side. Wonderful what a bit of Cave can do eh?

You Lucky Bastard then in that case.lol. ive actually rejoined Mugs site POF. Changed the criterias this time so i dont get bombarded by 55 year old milfs. Fuckin hell the young and pretty women love to make you work for it.

So far ive had 1 very friendly and helpful rejection, that i possibly could have turned round, if my magination and wit hadnt vanished half way through the chat.

At least Im on standy for some minx who looks like the boss of the Russion maffia. shes honestly told me she has a date this week, but id that doesnt work, she'll give me a chance.

Everyone's gonna see the profound in different things, I've listened to those artists and didn't really get much out of it, but I appreciate that in the historical context they were probably more meaningful to more people at the time they were produced.

One of my favourite vocalists is Kool Keith.

Sounds like you needs to be stocking up on the voddy and rohypnol then ey? What is this POF thing? Once my gf drops the sprog I'm gonna need to access some free and easy hairy growlers...

ONLY JOKING PEOPLE!!!

I will put this to music. I love writing melodies and structures but really stink at words. If I can figure out how to record again I will put it on YT see what you think. It might take me a bit though. I like F#-E-B for the verse.

Ah, you mean the old I-IV-V Inversion?!!

no he thinks he means the dropped e flat harmonic that mcartney uses (or was it Keef, shit, not much difference):D

(I am taking the piss here, i can play afew guitar chords, and know that e minor dropped or something gives a sad tone. A minor is the one Lennon belts the living shit out of in Working Class Hero to great effect.

Ceres i agree that Imagine is dated and naive now, of another age as you say. IMO tho Working Class Hero remains outside of time until KNOCKS revolution arrives.

More or less anything by Lou Reed. In this case I pick Berlin. All of it. Concept album innit. Not exactly cheerful but beautiful beyond words <3

I've never experience most of what the album is about (not a woman, never been beaten by a man... some experience of stimuant addiction, mind...). Doesn't matter cos themes transcend specifics. Which is what makes it more poetry than simple lyricism.

Lou Reed - Berlin (full album, live '06)

Not his best album lyrically but posting anyway cos has always been a massive favourite of mine and rarely gets a mention due to lack of obvious "hits" or much of anything that isn't unbelievably depressing. Aside from the last track maybe. But given she's just killed herself that may be mainly blessed relief after the rest... A thing of beauty and a very nice update - plenty of signature squealy extended feedback and stuff that wasn't on the original. Which is a bonus <3

That aside, I somewhat agree with Ceres that instrumental music is in a sense more poetic as it's more openended... but as it has no lyrics it has no place in a thread about the line between lyrica and poetry really.

Another obvious one. Less obvious ones will involve accessing tunes hard to access at the moment so sticking with the classics for now...

Radiohead. Pretty much anything by again. If you disagree then you are wrong. Simple as that.

(slight bias admitted: they're very frustratingly friends of friends... or at least were before they got well known. Doubt they'd return my phonecalls now, mind :D)

Radiohead - Paranoid Android (corking vid whether you like 'em or not)

Please could you stop the noise,
I'm trying to get some rest
From all the unborn chicken voices in my head
What's that?
What's that?

When I am king, you will be first against the wall
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all
What's that?
What's that?

Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
Kicking and squealing Gucci little piggy
You don't remember
You don't remember
Why don't you remember my name?
Off with his head, man
Off with his head, man
Why don't you remember my name?
I guess he does

Rain down, rain down
Come on rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height, height
Rain down, rain down
Come on rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height, height,
Rain down, rain down
Come on rain down on me

That's it, sir
You're leaving
The crackle of pigskin
The dust and the screaming
The yuppies networking
The panic, the vomit
The panic, the vomit
God loves his children,
God loves his children, yeah!

<3
