When did you first discover the internet and what did you use it for?

I've been online for about 14 years, my mum bought a PC for me going to high school because she thought it would help with homework. I was the first person I knew to get a computer and net access by many years. I'm not sure I ever used it for homework but I spent a lot of time in chat rooms talking pish to other people around the world. I rarely searched (notice I didn't say 'googled' there, it didn't exist at the time, was Altavista, Lycos and AOL I used and a quick 'google' shows they all still exist :sus:) or browsed web pages as I could never think of anything to look for / at (was too scared to look at porn in case I got caught or charged for it).

After I got bored with the chat rooms I remember I started to look at WWF wrestling websites and even joined some 'e-feds' which were like fantasy wresting leagues, even started my own one for a while. I coded my own website in HTML and uploaded it to Angelfire (still exists too), amazed I managed to do that as know nothing about web design or coding, I just copied code from other sites and worked out what it did. Got bored pretty quickly as you had to write up fake wrestling matches and pish, load of nonsense.

That was what I did for the first year or so of having the internet. Was hooked then and hooked now,

So what's your story?

I found the jolly roger cookbook and started making wee bombs out of weedkiller. You know, the usual stuff a little kid gets up to :)

Someone told me you could get free porn from da interwebz so I bought a pc as I was on a break from clubbing (read fucked in the head) back in 2000.

My wrist started hurting after a while though.

Oh and the columbine mass killers got the anarchist cookbook from da web as well that was another reason I wanted a pc.

Slightly more serious note that was the first time I used the interweb back in 2000, used dialup bbs's back in '92-'93 though but no pc in between those dates (don't ask)

First started using it around 97. Been on the internet every day since 2002.

Used it for no particular reason, just became part of my life straight away.

First started using the internet around 96 I think, back then if I remember correctly with AOL you got 15 hours per month of useage for £30 or something? Then every additional was about a fiver? Used to mainly use it for chat rooms at the start. Progressed on to downloading music from Napster (used to take about an hour to download one song!) and online gaming in about 99. I got pretty competitive playing TFC up in leagues etc up until about 2004 when I discovered drugs and alcohol were more fun. I've not really played any games competitively since that point.

Who remembers the ISP redhotant?

Edit: Did everyone else also get bombarded with free trial CDs from AOL? I'm sure at least one of those a week got sent to the house. Had thousands of the fucking things.

A work colleague of mine gave me a beginners guide to the internet around 2001. And then i discovered Schooldisco.com and i had to get on the net after that.:o Spent loads of time in Yahoo chat rooms at first, (ive always liked the interactive element of the net) and collecting tons of porn. Then started discovering all the education/information type stuff. Gradually got bored of chat rooms and porn, i now spend more time deleting parts of my porn collection (where the chicks have gone hugely turn off-ly out of fashion in 10 years or so, and other stuff that no longer does it for me) than i do downloading it.

A whole new phase of web use started after my discovery of Mephedrone. I have become more and more deeply involved in learning about drugs, finding the best places to buy them, and generally waffling on about them on drugs forums.

I have thousands and thousand of bookmarked and categorised web pages. What John Cooper Clarke said is very true 'if i got a computer and onto the internet i would never leave the house, as i'd spend all my time on it'. That has happened to me to a large extent. I am totally addicted to the internet.

porn back in '96

haha

I remember printing porn off on the school computers, got caught once and they showed the pictures to mine and my friends mothers when they got called in lol

I got a Sega Dreamcast in 2000 ish....

Played Quake 3 Arena online, and spent hours downloading pixellated single images of porn, much like what watsons posted above.

Hilarious animation, very true to life.

Got on the internet as we know it in 1995, and spent too much time in Yahoo chat rooms or on ICQ, also rave newsgroups. I guess that I first started using BBSs in 93 or thereabouts and dimly remember getting onto The Well at a mate's house shortly after that.

Before then all your anarchist cookbooks and piracy-enabling software came on floppies from friends or via mail order from one of the catalogues listed in the back of Amiga magazines. Masturbation was done using print pornography or one's imagination.

I had my first PC from Time Computers, back in early 2004 I think. Big fuck off tower, with 256MB of Ram, and a 30 gig hard drive. I used to spend the entire night/early morning in Lycos, back when it was a ship. I used download crap from Limewire, and browse snuffx. Before I knew about streaming porn, I found the hun, and used to spend ages downloading short preview clips.. oh the days..

Ha, I just remembered; my and my friends had a radio station on Winamp's shoutcast for a while, until everyone got bored. We had a website that my girlfriend at the time made, and we called it Zoom.fm, as that was our favourite room in Lycos.- memories!

I remember my first machine was treated with a mixture of awe and suspicion (Don't do that - it'll break!) This must have been the mid nineties. First website I ever looked at was the Viz one - took like nearly an hour to load a Fat Slags sketch.

The porn streaming sites are very bad for allowing nasties to make their way onto your computer, everyone probably knows this but i cant help stating the obvious sometimes. The highest possible security settings and AVG didnt stop all of them, since you have to lower your security settings a bit to watch streams. The worst ones are those that pretend to be an anti-virus program. They really fuck things up. Thankfully i have Windows 7 so i could fix it by signing on as a different user and getting rid of the shit, otherwise it would have been rebuild time. I used to have to do quite a few rebuilds at first due to nasty viruses completely fucking up my computer, before learning more about web security. Since starting to use the Firefox No Scripts add-on it seems to have been keeping the nasties at bay.
