shannon hoon died of a cocaine overdose. but nonetheless plenty of blind melon's songs are about smack - 'the pusher' being one.
i think some of massive attack's songs are connected to heroin. and john frusciante's solo stuff definitely covered it. rodriguez's album is also loaded with references, particularly in 'sugar man'.
waiting for my man is a velvet underground classic that any drug user can identify with
nick cave and the bad seeds also have plenty of heroin inspired tracks.
if you look back, there's a consistent link between opiates and music. in the 40s heroin became more popular amongst black youth who looked up to jazz legends such as Charlie Parker, Theodore Navarro and Chet Baker (all heroin users).
hector berlioz's classical masterpiece 'symphonie fantastique' is about a prolonged opium trip whereby a young man dreams his own death (executed by witches). it's cool :D

you may be right that maynard does not like herion, but i know for a fact that he and all of tool uses/used drugs.
