Info Whats up with this? new BL Skin??

Guys, read the "Memmorial" tab at the top of the board. It's the 12th of February. In memory of a BL'r that passed away 13yrs ago today. Ryan "QuickSilver" Haight. And in memory of all BLr's that have passed away, every 12 Feb, from here forward, bluelight is going to have the board black for the day.
this.

some of the comments in this thread read, to me, as extremely selfish and pretty offensive.

if there's one thing on which we can all agree, isn't it that a lost life is a tragedy, especially given our mission? the board, and sadly in particular the eadd forum, has been hit hard by death in the last year and i would have expected to find some level of sympathy and compassion for a board-wide memorial.

Bad skin = Bad attitudes I'm afraid

Is it not disrespectful to have a skin for remembrance that looks unfinished and tasteless??

I'd have to disagree on the idea that anyone has posted "selfishly". By the point that I had posted, at least, the message on the homepage, relating to memorial, was not yet up. I posted to comment that the skin does not look complete, which I still stand by.

I didn't mean to insult anyone, and would never intend on disrespecting fellow bluelighters who have passed away.

Oh wow. I didn't even see that this was in memorial to those who have passed...

I'll slink back into my corner now.

you're free to disagree, obviously, but some of these responses are the very definition of the word selfish.

the change of skin is a simple gesture of memory. bluelight is staffed entirely by volunteers so we don't have the resources to plan or execute a grand plan. it's a subtle change which invites us to come together, reflect on what we do and remember those we've lost - a stark reminder of the importance of the mission looking forward.

some people chose not to think of others. some chose to think only of themselves.

the color scheme of the board changed for a day or two. oh, the humanity! that's what you have to complain about? that's something you find fault with?

so, yes. it's a first world problem and it's unbelievable selfish.

it's quite possible to not intend to do something but still do it...

The new skin is extremely harsh.. but so is death, deal with it.

I'll be glad when we can go back to the old skin, but I do hope the Memorial stays up. I've clicked the "home" page instead of the "forum" page like 50 times the last day or two but I still get a bit tingly each time I see it :)

it really is flabbergasting that people have had such powerfully negative responses to a simple change in color scheme, when the purpose is to honor those who have passed. these people were our friends and family.

especially considering last year's series of tragedies in eadd, and the recent loss of qwe.

i will give the complainers the benefit of the doubt, i guess (i know i've said some stupid, insensitive shit before too). they must not be aware that this community is still deeply in mourning right now.

I second this. Perhaps to some, Bluelight is only a place to pop in for a few laughs and find entertainment. For the rest of us, it's a place where we've met life-long friends, some of whom we've had taken from us far too early, and a place we're committed to preserving and serving with a deep sense of responsibility.

Bluelight going black is about looking to the future, and to understand where we need to go as a community we have to be aware of our past. The past few days of "Blacklight" have generated quite a bit of healthy discussion around drug use, addiction, the effectiveness and availability of quality treatment and the prospects for recovery. Nobody is forcing anyone to "mourn" and to hear some folks whine to the contrary is disappointing to many of us on staff, including myself. If you can't handle a few days of "inconvenience" hoisted upon you by a temporary color change I suggest you mark next year on your calendar and find something else to do besides Bluelight come mid February.

To those of you who've helped out across the site in this effort, you have our gratitude. Bluelight is all the better for your efforts.

I think maybe there is a legitimate discussion to be had about the merits of that black layout and whether it actually had the intended effect. I'll quote some EADDer's thoughts on this, as like you say we have had a lot of deaths in the past year; our opinions really ought to count, coming from people who care.

Please excuse the language in some of these:

This black layout looks shitter by the day. they could of added a site entrace page with some sorta condolences message to those who have passed and a button on it to enter the site, woulda been more memorable than this fucking annoying black layout

Whilst I totally get the reasons for Blacklight, I do think it's rather working against itself. Are any of us stopping to consider our fallen comrades? Or are we just being irritated and bitchin' 'bout the ridiculously shite colour scheme? Surely not what's intended. And as for any potential new members who are unfortunate enough to find the site whilst it's in mourning... can't imagine we're getting many new registrations at the moment. If it'd looked like this when I was first looking for info on those exciting new alphanumeric drugs I'd just discovered and found this 'orrible scheme I'd probably now be a longstanding member of Drug-Forum... and that's a fate not even worth thinking about 8o

I'm willing to bet that the black layout idea was made by some American BL Admin, culturally they are so different from us humans, it' astonishing, in their world it's like placing your national flag outside your yard or putting a bumper sticker with "support our troops"

In their own incredibly retarded perception of reality they probably feel that by changing the colour of the site we are somehow honouring and respecting our fallen heroes. Incredible

Such a dumb decision, it beggars belief

By the way I do and always will respect the dear memory of the people we have lost, it's just that this particular way of doing so is incredibly stupid.

Personally, and grief is a personal thing, I am aware of our fallen comrades every fucking day without needing to be forced to remember it by the, no doubt well-meaning, management. Alasdair says the bitching about the colour scheme is "unbelievable selfish", maybe it is, but if it is, then so is forcing one style of remembrance (annual black) onto hundreds of people who may have their own ways of remembering, or maybe just not being able to forget.

Having arguments about it and insulting each other is beyond lunacy.

Truthquoted.

And as for bitchin' bout the colour scheme, I'm bitchin' specifically about this crappy version of Blacklight. The old version looked fine. Looked good actually - I'd've chosen it for my regular skin if it were available. It's purely this update that is rancid beyond belief.

That aside, I cocnur on the daily remembrance thing. Any member who knew any of those we've lost is surely the same. That said, I don't have a problem with an annual Blacklight - just with this particularly godawful version of the skin.

Then I'd imagine even MORE complaints of people who would have had to trudge through a page they don't feel like seeing, before getting to the forum.

There was a memorial button.

"Trude", one click to enter the site is hardly defines a "trude", id sooner have a heartfelt pre entry page message and a button than constant harsh black and white

Dont listen to me though, i know nothing

I'm not sure what "trude" means. I was using the word "trudge" as in that's what people would most likely complain about.

trudge |trəj| verb [ no obj. ]
walk slowly and with heavy steps, typically because of exhaustion or harsh conditions.
