🌟🌟 Social 🌟🌟 What's the last film you saw? v. Why doesn’t Peter Jackson wear shoes?

Watched The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) tonight.

At first I kinda had trouble accepting Jesus as a blond hair, blue eyed gent but I remembered that the catholic church has portrayed him as such for centuries. The ending was a mindfuck, like wow. During the opening credits, they stated that it is a fictional story not based on the gospels. However, much of the script was based on actual scripture albeit with minor alterations to verbiage. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. Must be watched with an open mind.
Watched this myself tonight. It was mad decent, if a bit long winded. I much preferred Silence by Scorsese as far as his Christian flicks go, but maybe that’s because I was able to see it in theaters years ago now.

Either way, I agree, the ending was real good, as was the first half. Very interesting going into it with an open mind. Harvey Keitel’s portrayal of Judas brought me to tears; he was the true star of the show.

Illang: The Wolf Brigade ( 2018 )

Decent remake of the 90s Japanese anime flick, instead taking place in a reunifying Korea. I think all the low ratings on IMDB must be coming from grumpy Koreans, because I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. One of the best Asian action flicks I’ve seen in recent years.

7.7/10

Saw a Ukrainian animation in the cinema today.

Mavka: The Forest Song

My first Ukrainian film (I think?). Was pleasantly surprised.

Mavka is better - in many ways - than Hollywood kids films, despite only costing $5 million USD.

There wasn't much in the way of overt politics. The animation is beautiful. The creatures are cool. The characters are diverse and well established. The villain's gay sidekick was good fun. If it was a Hollywood film, he'd be less ridiculously gay. In fact, there wouldn't be a gay villain at all.

It reminded me of a lot of other classic Disney films, particularly: the original (animated) Beauty & the Beast and Snow White. It also reminded me of video games (in general) somehow and Japanese animation.

I went to see it with my daughter. We go to see every kids film that comes out in the cinema and some adult ones too... It's unfortunate that all the female characters are so skinny. I notice this more and more with kids film and TV. They don't look healthy. They look anorexic. They look like their legs and arms could snap at any moment like giant toothpicks.

I give it a solid 7/10

Strange. I've always thought he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag and Last Temptation is his worst role IMO. He's so out of place in the film (with his modern American accent and mannerisms) it's borderline ridiculous. God knows why Scorsese cast a "character actor" in a period film. It's like putting Gilbert Gottfried in Braveheart.

What is a character actor, BTW? Anybody know? Is it basically someone who has zero range and always just acts like themselves regardless of the role they're playing?

It's not just the fact that Keitel doesn't alter his personality or accent, he also has a jarring unnatural way of delivering dialogue. I love many of the films he is in and lots of great directors keep casting him, so clearly I'm alone with this opinion. It honestly baffles me that you could say he was good as Judas though. I always assumed even his fans thought that was a misfire, but I googled it just now and lots of people agree with you!

WTF? Dafoe shits all over Judas in that movie.

Dafoe was real good as Jesus yeah, but I dunno. I thought Keitel was a good Judas, or perhaps the writing made Judas my favorite character.

Yeah Keitel is somewhat a character actor at times. Always comes across as a gangster. But I think he pulled off the role of Judas very well personally.

Just my 2C.

Also his accent wasn’t of issue; all the Roman’s were English accented; all the Hebrews had East Coast accents. I think that was done intentionally.

No Escape (1994)

Decent 90s cheese on a high budget, Ray Liota is surprisingly good.

Death Wish 2 (1982)

Gotta love Charles Bronson flicks. Fuck tha bad guys straight from tha middle class.

Watched the first 15 minutes of the new Shazam movie and holy shit did it fucking suck. Hands down worst fucking movie of the year. The damn cam quality of the movie was better than the actual movie.

I’m really digging urban decay/vigilante stuff right now. Watching Death Wish 3; this time Paul Kersey has the sanctioning of the local police to “do his thing”. Loving it lol

Oh yeah, I watched Silence a few years ago. Very good as well. I forgot that it was a Scorsese.

Death Wish 3 was good fun. Am pretty drunk so moving onto Death Wish 4. Thank God Amazon has some movies I dig this month lol

“Who the fuck are you?”
“Death.”
*Blam!!! Blamm!!!*

Funny, I guess I am somewhere between you and @Cream Gravy? on this. While I agree that the casting was a little suspect, I also appreciate a good script and story so IMHO that kind of balanced things out.

Really? I saw it more as Judas shitting all over Jesus. One of the first scenes in the film was Judas literally kicking Jesus's ass. lol

The Lair of The White Worm. A favorite of Matt Harvey, founder of the goregrind band exhumed. Some great shots and effects, some not so good acting. It's quite English in parts, and Hugh Grant obviously has a problem with leading a bunch of foolish teenagers or 20 somethings into the cave where this mythological worm is trapped, but all in all its entertaining and even funny in its campiness. There's a really intense hallucination scene where a giant worm coils around jesus on the cross and a confusing celebration before the plot gets going when Hugh plays the role of a worm killer and cuts a fake worm apart. It's made of people from the town who dress up like a worm. Then an out of towner is tricked into eating worms. lol.

I uploaded a scene of the action in the lair itself, which is towards the end of the movie. I don't think it gives too much away, and it's among the scenes with the better acting.

Coriolanus (2011) - 7/10 - enjoyable adaptation of Shakespeare

Event Horizon (1997) - 6.5/10 - not as disturbing as the first time I saw it; clearly I’ve grown up and watched many more horror flicks that have desensitized me, but still creepy. I wish there was the full cut available with the extra 30 minutes of footage

Tron (1982) - 7.2/10 - classic 80s sci-fi cheese, loved seeing those actors young again

Tron Legacy (2010) - 8/10 - a perfect follow up to the classic film, I might be a bit biased because it came out the year I discovered cannabis lol. The OST is one of the best ever IMO and I loved seeing Boxleitner and Bridges return to the screen. Olivia Wilde in tight clothing and sexy eyeliner is always a plus. Good pacing for a two hour film, lots of action and well acted scenes. The CGI young version of Bridges was a bit too Alec Baldwin looking but better than some later CGIing of actors I’ve seen

Terminator: Genesys (2015)

A worthy reboot of the series; lots of fan service. Several scenes in the beginning are literal scene for scene remakes of the original film which I appreciated feeling the first film the best. Overall cheesy and too divergent but not bad. Relevant to the modern era.

7.2/10

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

It was okay, but it wasn't weird enough for me.

The best Weird Al movie, by far, is still The Vidiot from UHF.

I'm tired of seeing Daniel Radcliffe. I don't think he's a good actor. He didn't climb to the top. He's just a celebrity because of the popularity of Harry Potter.

Everything Everywhere winning all the Oscars this year was downright retarded. The Academy has been losing the plot for a long time... but seriously, what the fuck? They're so desperate to not be racist, they're just throwing awards at anybody (or any film) that isn't white. It's a goofy kung-fu movie. Where are Jackie Chan's academy awards?

Just googled it and realized that "The Daniels" don't include Radcliffe.

So, Swiss Army Man was the combined effort of three men named Daniel?

Thank God Harry Potter doesn't have an oscar.

I feel better now.
