the tenant, despite it touching base on the reality of pain in the ass neighbors that know how to test your sanity, something that i've experianced, it wasnt as good as i thought it would be, it was as big of a let down as rosemary's baby

watched no country for old men for the 2nd time, made more sense this time, love the rinse and repeat effect of cohen bros flicks

and watched fargo again for the 10th or so time, god damn i love every scene in that movie

Date Night

i remember laughing. but for such a great cast, not enough.

The Devil's Own

just watching what was on HBO. it is terrible. similar to but even worse than Patriot Games.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Amazing film. Gary Oldman is no doubt my favorite actor of all time. This is one of if not the best film ever made about espionage. The only other movie that is even comparable is The Good Shepherd.

All in all I rate it 10/10.

^I think you'll love it. Be warned however there is a lot of spy talk and jargon or what they call tradecraft language. Its easier to understand if you've read the book though.

actually, that kind of language is one of the biggest appeals to me :D

last night watched von trier's europa (zentropa). trippy stuff.

Awesome, I'm planning to see Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in gold class this week. Glad to hear it's good :D

i watched 127 hours for the second time.

even knowing the story and having seen the movie once already took very little edge off the thrill. the movie really does a lot with very little thanks to danny 'the new kubrick' boyle.

alasdair

boyle does not even remotely compare with kubrick. his high quality music video photography is still pop next to k's fine compositions.

Broken English

chosen because there is an interview with the director in Lula Magazine, it stars parker posey, and it is on netflix instant in HD. parker posey is great in it.

movie as a whole is not that great. too realistic in some of the wrong places, leaving aspects of it bland. too structured and purposed in others, leaving the story sometimes bare. but i think it is successful in a few veins. i like its portrayal of the relationship between anxiety, drinking too much, and benzos. i like the character parker plays. the movie has a nice sharp ending. so it was not a complete miss. just rough.

i think it is the director's, zoe cassavetes, first and only feature film. almost everything in this issue of the magazine has something to do with the rodarte sisters and/or sofia coppola. the interview asks about her creative relationship with sofia. that relationship must have gotten zoe the interview. this movie feels very, very influenced by sofia's few films. unfortunately it is not fantastic and ethereal like sofia's movies. and while sofia's movies are girly, which is a good thing, i would not call them chick flicks in the slightest. i would not call Broken English a chick flick, but it skirts the genre at moments.

Have to agree with L2R on this one. Boyle doesn't even compare with Kubrick in any way shape or form.

Just compare their two science fiction films together (2001 and Sunshine) and you will see the obvious differences in style and approach.

Hell even their choices of sets for those two movies are different. Kubrick got a rotating set for his simulation of artificial gravity. Danny Boyle did it the lazy way and did what a million other science fiction movies did.

Comparing Boyle to Kubrick would almost be like comparing Eli Roth to Alfred Hitchcock because they both made horror movies. Doesn't work.

^I guess if your into making wild and inaccurate comparisons sure why not. :|

Eli Roth = Alfred Hitchcock?

Kubrick = Boyle?

James Cameron = Georges Méliès?

^Not putting words in your mouth. I don't do that as it often gets messy.:)

I was trying to make a point. As in "as long as we are making wild and inaccurate comparisons why not compare these directors that are also nothing alike."

However I think the point went over your head a bit.

I guess my ultimate point is why call Boyle the new Kubrick anyway? They are two completely different film makers. Would you call James Cameron the new Georges Méliès?

^That's fine.

Forgive me for trying to engage in a discussion with you. Just wanted to understand your reasoning for why you felt this is a good comparison.
