Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

i finally got to the new imax in hefei. nice, high quality theatre, but then i'd expect nothing less for the whopping 100 yuan ticket to get in. i missed the tintin run (and hope it's still showing in sydney next month) so i caught the first day of mission impossible 4. excellent and creative thrills, which i was expecting from brad bird.

funny note of the day, the film was slightly censored. a few phrases, the voices got chopped and PLAYED BACKWARDS. i couldn't read the chinese subtitles, but listening to the english got funny on about 6-7 small points, half of which were in that last conversation. "yes i was a *backwards devil talk*, that's why i had to *backwards devil talk*. i'm nowmlooking forward to watching it uncut to see what was said which upset the chinese. i'm pretty sure the first one was simply the phrase "cuban missile crisis", from a line something like "American and Russian relations haven't been this tense since *backwards devil talk* =D

finally saw it again, and found the chinese version chopped the mention of the cuban missile crisis (as i thought), and interestingly every mention of the croatian/serbian conflict.

Cruel Story of Youth

it is a mix between the 60s new wave romances and the 50s sensationalized moral tales. the lead girl is so pretty. she wears lots of pretty dresses. which looks great on technicolor film. but the story is stupid. and weird. at one point the girl tells the boy he is "so sweet" when he says ok to her not being able to fuck at the moment. it's nice of him because he usually just rapes her. but that's love in their book. and society won't allow it. oh romeo.

Permanent Vacation

i actually saw this movie last week. most notes about it i made in my head are now gone. but i remember thinking that the movie had to be making fun of itself. and movies in general.

Awe? Love at first fight.

Think that's pretty much explained in the trailer, nice use of the spoil code though :)

Is the film any good, I've not heard too many positive reviews about it and haven't had any urge to see it. Good film?

lol... actually, given how limited the film is in it's variety of settings, it actually held my attention pretty well.

You can tell it's a Danny Boyle film: saturation or colours, unexpected comedy, abrupt segues into flashback, intense use of sound and music.

I only watched it as it'd been sat on my server for about 3 months, along with a load of other films that were low on the priority list.

Wonder Boys

because it was getting talked up in "all time favorite movie" thread. it's fun. i like it. i was a little surprised at its lowbrow approach.

i loved it. danny boyle is the new kubrick, i tell you but don't be caught dead repeating that in here :)

related reading: 127 Hours

it scored 3.3125 stars out of 5 on bluelight, 7.8/10 on imdb and 93% on the tomatometer at rottentomatoes.com.

i thought it was fantastic but then i think danny boyle is the new kubrick.

:)

Saw the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel tonight, a good movie with some powerful and weak moments sprinkled throughout, but good performances from the great ensemble.
Gonna see Seeking a Friend for the End of the World tomorrow, looking forward to that.

"Based upon the true life story of a Police Captain in the South African Police force during the peak of apartheid unrest in the late 70’s, when he becomes more and more appalled at the actions of the force (culminating with his killing an unarmed man in the Soweto riots), Stander becomes the countries most successful bank robber (and respected by the general population) in an effort to highlight that it’s not just the black man that commits the crimes. The film becomes more and more interesting as the situation gets more and more out of control, with the whole force desperately trying to catch him as he (and his gang) make the force look like idiots. This is an exciting film, very well acted (especially by the lead Thomas Jane) and directed very effectively. This deserved more than a straight to dvd release here in the UK."

Attenberg

been waiting for this to be available for rental on region 1 DVD for quite some time. on Joe's recommendation. i thought it was from the director of Dogtooth while watching. it's directed by the associate producer of Dogtooth. the director and co-writer of Dogtooth plays a supporting role. you see his balls.

the art house version of The Descendants. the choreographed walking scenes between the two friends remind me of Daises. the way the camera has an unwavering focus on awkward moments reminds me of harmony korine--the opening scene is very similar to that of Kids. its way of dealing with sexuality as a theme also reminds me of todd solondz.

i like it. need to give it another viewing.

I rate the movie 2 stars out of 5, was worth the $1 to watch it at the $1 movies, would not pay full price(15$) ticket to watch it, or even buy it on DVD,

going to go watch Chernobyl Diaries tonight

better b scary!
hooray for the $1 movie theater being close to me.

saw chernobyl diaries three days ago. semi-decent horror flick, but wouldn't necessarily recommend it. (2/5)

watched the guard while on a combination of midazolam, synthetic cannabinoids (JWH-something), acid and GBL. saw the movie before completely sober and had a blast. watching on that drug combo greatly enhanced an already incredibly funny movie. god brendan gleeson is fantastic in it.
highly, highly recommended. (5/5)

Yesterday:

Thursday 1998 - Movie was ok. Decent story and plot, but I didn't really like any of the character development or the basic premise of the main character. It just didn't seem believable

Today:

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels 1998 - Had heard about this for a while and am glad I finally watched it. Liked the storyline and pace of the movie.

Blue Velvet 1986 - Sort of wish I watched this before Lock, Stock. This was a much heavier storyline and Dennis Hopper is freaking creepy. I believe this is the first David Lynch movie I've seen.
