I have a tolerance for most medication it seems, and with my current treatment for ADHD (Desoxyn) often causing insomnia i have tried many sleep aids to treat this.
I've been taking barbiturates (lately Seconal or Alurate, but formerly Seconal or Tuinal) on and off for sleep for perhaps a year to sixteen months now. I have very treatment-resistant episodes of severe insomnia occasionally that will keep me awake for up to five days on end; after three days, I start to suffer the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation (i.e. slight visual disturbances at first, followed by full-blown visual and auditory hallucinations, then crazyness). Nothing else, outside of drinking large amounts along with my already-high dose of Diazepam works.
-Zopliclone 15mgs, worked for a few hours then woke up
-Xanax, nada-have em' in many mgs daily, not sedating
-Klonopin, same as above.
-Nitrazepam-hangover-long half life-not suitable as a sleep med
-Halcion, .5mgs-made me wake up after 3 hours@paranoid too
-Diazepam~80mgs+a few shots of Vodka works well, but MD frowns on it
So he knowing my hard to manage insomnia (to discourage me from drinking to sleep), has alternated my sleep meds to include:
-2, Seconal, 200mgs Secobarbital for 1 week then alternating with
-2-3, Amytal Sodium
-2,Tuinal, 100mgs Seconal+Amytal combined in one pill.
-2, Alurate.
-2, Nembutal, 100mgs Pentobarbital was the most effective Unfortunately, Nembutal (or pentobarbital) is available only in liquid form for I.V. (perhaps also I.M.?) injection and suppositories these days. I've had the good fortune of trying some of the capsules a few years ago, I would take it over Seconal if it weren't for the lack of a readily-available oral preparation.
I'm not sure if it's still possible to get something like glutethimide (formerly Doriden), Ethchlorvynol (formerly Placidyl), or Methyprylon (formerly Noludar) filled . . . perhaps at a compounding pharmacy? They're all still only CII drugs, unlike Methaqualone (Quaalades), unfortunately.
If anyone knows how horrible living with insomnia can be, it's me. :-(.
