What was the best "sleeping pill" for you?

Nod. I was rxed 2mg diazepam initially for anxiety. What would the dose be if it was rxed for insomnia? I only asked about midazolam because I know of a few people where I am from who have been rxed it.

Diazepam, yes - but not midazolam, at least not in the US. In the Europe it's seldomly prescribed for the worst insomniacs, but it's absolutely definately not the first choice for insomnia, nor second, nor third.

Or ever... It's used to knock people out for surgery. I mean, I dislocate my hip & they shot me with it to relocate it... I was sort of out of it... but not enough for the pain!

Z-drugs (zolpidem, zopiclone, zaleplon) are really the best if you don´t take them everyday.
I use them only about once every month, and they never fail to make me sleep....
And they give no hangover the next morning...
(Only problem is that if you wake up during the night, you can´t fall asleep again, unless you take one more pill...)

I haven't tried zolpidem or zaleplon. I had bad 'hangovers' with zopiclone and sometimes it wouldn't make me fall asleep. Is there a chance I would have a similair experience with the other Z-drugs?

I liked Ambien for awile but built up a tolerance and quit it. A friend suggested an OTC, Sleep MD. I've been taking those for awile and they do seem to help. I feel okay in the mornins as well. You can pick them up at drug stores etc. Hope they help you.

Halcion would be my personal favorite. Its potency, fast onset and short duration made it ideal, except for the fact that it generally made me do stupid things while on it (moreso than other benzos).

The runners up would be Temazepam and Nitrazepam. The main problem I found with nitrazepam was that due to its longer half life, it generally left me pretty groggy and hazy in the morning. Temazepam was usually quite good, except that it did have potency issues, and required that I take a fairly large dose. Both nitrazepam and temazepam are notable in that as far as benzos go, they're two of the most enjoyable, IMO.

Midazolam was overall, quite good, except for the fact that the anterograde amnesia it induced was a little too strong for my liking.

However, I'm currently on Zopiclone 7.5 mg and it works pretty well overall.

It's been withdrawn from many markets for making people do wierd stuff... Didn't 'Orbital' do a track called Halcion "halcionnnnn and onnnnn and onnnn" because their mother became addicted?

Thumbs down.

xanax is my favorite although it wears off in the middle of the night and I have to redose, also restoril is the bomb

^ I'll attest to what haribo1 said about Halcion. Pretty much every time I've taken Halcion, I've done something stupid or unusual before falling asleep. While I consider it to be a good sleeper strictly due to its potency, fast onset and short half-life, I definitely consider it to be a highly unpredictable medication. Throw in the fact that it's well known to cause aggressive, and as haribo1 said, unusual behaviour, and Halcion becomes somewhat questionable.

Now that I think of it, I'd say that its unpredictability is to the point where it's almost a good thing that it's either banned or rarely prescribed.

The bottom line is that although Halcion can be highly effective, it needs to be taken with extreme care and in as controlled an environment as possible.

Alprazolam certainly will help me sleep, although I agree that it isn't the best choice (tollerance issues, dependency, etc.) especially with I.R. I have some 1mg extended release xanax that seem to knock me out for at least 6-7 hours. Currently, the Niravam (alprazolam disintegrating orange flavored pills) work so well, but wear off damn fast :(

Anyone else find doxylamine succinate to work well? Diphenhydramine Hcl makes me groggy the next day, and not as "refreshed."

Melatonin works well when you schedule a dose at a certain hour, so you have a regular sleep cycle. I take mine at 10 and crash at 11.

Clonazepam seems to give me "night time energy." I'll find myself wandering around at night cleaning and eating :D I want to switch back to xanax IR and just use melatonin and exercise to get to sleep.

Haha! I saw the doctor today. The doctor wasn't sure what to prescribe me as she wasn't familiar with with the medication i was taking (to be fair, I couldn't really pronounce 'escitlopram') and mentioned dormicum (midazolam). She said she would check it out and should visit again soon.

:)

mman lunesta for me works wonders. the shit is so expensive is ridculous but it has me in that very relaxed, natural feeling, ready to leep state. unlike trazodone's chemical "i see crosseyed when i open my eyes so i might as well sleep kind of thing

I have a tolerance for most medication it seems, and with my current treatment for ADHD (Desoxyn) often causing insomnia i have tried many sleep aids to treat this.

I've been taking barbiturates (lately Seconal or Alurate, but formerly Seconal or Tuinal) on and off for sleep for perhaps a year to sixteen months now. I have very treatment-resistant episodes of severe insomnia occasionally that will keep me awake for up to five days on end; after three days, I start to suffer the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation (i.e. slight visual disturbances at first, followed by full-blown visual and auditory hallucinations, then crazyness). Nothing else, outside of drinking large amounts along with my already-high dose of Diazepam works.

-Zopliclone 15mgs, worked for a few hours then woke up
-Xanax, nada-have em' in many mgs daily, not sedating
-Klonopin, same as above.
-Nitrazepam-hangover-long half life-not suitable as a sleep med
-Halcion, .5mgs-made me wake up after 3 hours@paranoid too
-Diazepam~80mgs+a few shots of Vodka works well, but MD frowns on it

So he knowing my hard to manage insomnia (to discourage me from drinking to sleep), has alternated my sleep meds to include:

-2, Seconal, 200mgs Secobarbital for 1 week then alternating with
-2-3, Amytal Sodium
-2,Tuinal, 100mgs Seconal+Amytal combined in one pill.
-2, Alurate.
-2, Nembutal, 100mgs Pentobarbital was the most effective Unfortunately, Nembutal (or pentobarbital) is available only in liquid form for I.V. (perhaps also I.M.?) injection and suppositories these days. I've had the good fortune of trying some of the capsules a few years ago, I would take it over Seconal if it weren't for the lack of a readily-available oral preparation.

I'm not sure if it's still possible to get something like glutethimide (formerly Doriden), Ethchlorvynol (formerly Placidyl), or Methyprylon (formerly Noludar) filled . . . perhaps at a compounding pharmacy? They're all still only CII drugs, unlike Methaqualone (Quaalades), unfortunately.

If anyone knows how horrible living with insomnia can be, it's me. :-(.

I took 2, 7.5mg Hypnoval (Midazolam) tabs before a dentists appointment, and they worked somewhat, so he called in 2 more and it nulled me for about 2 hours, making it bearable-i'd assume IV would be superior, but impratical for insomnia!

Things that will put me to sleep unquestionably: secobarbital, amobarbital, secobarbital/amobarbital combination, pentobarbital, barbiturate anesthetic adjuncts (i.e. thiopental sodium), chloral hydrate, methaquaalone (though I've only had it in the methaquaalone/diphenhydramine combination pill, "Mandrax"-very good!), fentanyl, certain narcotic anesthetic adjuncts, and sodium oxybate. Unfortunately I can't afford sodium oxybate, or I'd take it over secobarbital and chloral.

Obviously, the barbs are my most effective options (aside from sodium oxybate, which is probably the safest of all the drug treatments I listed). There's no chance of overdose as I, for one thing, have no desire to do so, and just as a precautionary measure I have my mother hold on to the bottles of Seconal and Tuinal, Alurate, Amytal, Pheno, while I only keep a single night's supply of each on hand in case the need arises (which it hasn't lately;

I wish they'd bring back nembutal, as a couple of thoes put me out.
