What was Jesus trying to do?

I'm sure he wanted everyone to listen; I am also sure he did not intend for a religion to ngrow up around his teachings. I think he would weep at the state of modern Christianity for the most part. I also think that he was not trying to say that he is the son of "god" in some way that makes him superior to us or more perfect. I think when he said he was the son of "god", he meant it in the same way that we all are. He was trying to say that we all have equal potential to live moral and enlightened lives. I think he was 2000 or so years ahead of his time, trying to help humanity evolve as we are hopefully going to be doing soon.

His teachings were beautifully simple and common sense. Love everyone, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Especially the second one, anyone with any sort of intellectual and moral maturity can see that this is the only way to live as a society, the only way a society can truly succeed.

Also, he didn't write anything down. Other people wrote down what they claimed he said. So there's any amount of room for personal agendas coming through and inaccuracies.

Well im not sure how many of you are ACTUALLY Christian, but coming from someone who IS, i'd like to address a few points.

-if your not a Christian, please dont talk about him like you know what your talking about. That would be like me walking into a Buddhist temple and telling them what i thought about their Gods. its not my religion, so how could i understand it? please.(i know someone is going to complain about this first point, so let me say that i'm not trying to silence anyones opinions. I am trying to presenting a sound argument. You cant understand something that you dont believe in.)

-We believe that Jesus came to Earth, not to start some new religion, but to die for our sins and show us what life should truly be like.(generosity, helping the least of these, loving all, etc)
Before his coming, Jews had to make animal sacrifices to gain penance for their sins. Death and blood represented the ultimate price, which granted them atonement. But as said in John 3:16-17 of the Bible- "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

This means that Jesus DID NOT come to the world just to do miracles, or to just teach people, or just be a moral example, but he came to die as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, replacing the need to humans to sacrifice anything anymore. This is why Christians believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation and the basis of Christianity= Essentially, God loves YOU so much, he sacrificed his own son as payment for all your sins, making your spirit perfect enough to be able to join him in Heaven after death. Really, the only REQUIREMENT you have to do is believe that Jesus is lord and died for you, and salvation is yours. Its just that easy.

-And as for wether Jesus really existed or not, well every other religion from judaism to Islam acknowledges Jesus's existence. Noone disputes his existence. Christians just believe him divine.

-And i know someone is gonna call me out for "pushing my beliefs upon them". I'm not. I'm informing you, from an actual christians point of view, what we believe. I realize that there is literally nothing i can say to you in an arguement to make you just drop everything and follow jesus. So i'm not gonna argue. If you have questions or comments, please ask them politely and i'll be happy to answer with the best of my knowledge.

you know, you can study a religion extensively but not be a member of that faith. the academic approach means always ensuring you have an "outsiders" point of view, but i think you can learn a lot more about a religion if you devote some time to being an "insider" as well.

you know why i dont like christianity? because its an incredibly blasphemous religion. the first commandment states "I am the Lord, your God. You shall have no other gods before Me" yet christians worship Jesus as God himself. the trinity? sounds like polytheism to me. as least the Sepherot doesnt attribute conciousness and human traits to the 10 Divine Aspects themselves, which keeps kabbalah from developing into a polytheistic belief system.

also, does Jesus ever explicitly claim that he is the "Son of God"? its been a while since i read the second (sorry, "new") testament, but i just seem to remember him referring to God as "Father," which i myself do. that doesnt mean i'm claiming to be GOD HIMSELF IN THE FLESH, its just a term that feels more comfortable than "God" or "adonai"

oh, and i did used to be a christian at one point, baptized and everything (i have this cool baptismal certificate!), but for years and years i just had this feeling that something wasnt quite right, the Truth isnt there... so i started studying other religions quite extensively, but thats for another thread, another time.
 
I think maybe Jesus wanted to revive the spirituality of his people e.g. luke 13:34 0 jerusalem, u who kill the prophets and stone those sent 2 u, how often I hav longed to gather ur children together, az a hen gathers her chix undr her wings but u r nt willing.he prob thought it was goin 2b easier to influence the general peps, poor, sick, lame they r generaly more open minded due to the desparate nature of thier social status unlike they law makers, rulers and the rich who were generally comfortable in there way of life and less obliged to giv up th good sinz and privliges of "The World" .luke 9:50 who eva iz not against u is 4 u. The poor certainly wern't against Jesus he'd done more for them than any other man of power or influence. Also remebering that the poor were a majority like th roots of most mass movements in history and 2day it starts with th people in th streets (th underground rizes up on th shoulders of corruption?) All i Know is that pollitically speaking helping th poor is logical brilliance. az 4 th question was he genuine in wanting his people to go to heaven i cnt offer much on that but im sure that he definetly wanted us 2 think so.

can we discuss(what was Jesus trying to do?) it is the thread title. I think he wanted to start a satanic sex cult and practise canabilism and thats why 2day wen we hav communion we take the "body of christ" and drink his blood. Rock ON Jesus!.lol

That is such bullshit. It's that kind of mentality that fuels the fundamentalists arrogance in their belief that only they truly know God's will, or know the true interpretation of scriptures.

With all the Republicans in this country claiming to represent Jesus, you would think that Jesus went around hating on poor people telling them to get a job and make lots of money and that the poor isnt their responsibility.

Jesus believed in economic collectivism. He was not a fiscal conservative.
