What "subgenre" are you? V. Grebos, the crusties and the goths

You mean their personal style in the way they dress like other members of the group?

Nail/head.

This was one of those eternal college-era conversations that got pretty heated at times. Never did understand it. Each lil group professes to be all about "individuality" and "self-expression" whilst simulataneously all dressing alike, listening to the same music and arbitrarily hating their traditional "enemy" group without ever having actually interracted with them thus engaging in the mortal sin they all blame each other for doing without once looking in the mirror. Such a load of old wank.

But in the spirit of joining in... None of the above. I really don't even know where to begin to categorise myself. Not being wanky about it either - I genuinely don't get it.

In terms of music... it's easier to think of what I don't like than what I do. If it's good I like it. If it's shite I don't. That's all there is to it.

In terms of clothing... Hmm... trickier. I often used to be lumped-in with goths cos I wore a lot of black, am fond of "exotic" and/or "luxorious" fabrics (silk and velvet are my friends <3) and painted me nails. However, I also got lumped in with the hippies for also being fond of bright colours, wacky prints and having long hair. Also got lumped in with the metallers/"grebos" due to a fondness for leather jackets (but always thought that a tenuous link at best).

Currently I wear whatever fits me cos I put on so much weight after I knocked the smack 'n' crack on the head and moved to the arse end of nowhere to twiddle me thumbs and waste a fairly large percentage of my adult life. I don't like what I wear nor wear what I like. It's just cheap and available. My old wardrobe mocks me with it's flamboyant style, plushy fabrics and 30" waist :|

tl;dr - D) None of the above.

I have to admit I very very rarely buy anything for myself, missis MM will just come home with some new jeans, or T shirt, or hoody, or hat...

I just wear what I'm given.

I do get me own trainers sometimes, always online.

Was deffo a metalhead rocker in my younger days, but don't feel I belong to any 'tribe' now apart from maybe moaning old git.

^ glad you joined in :)
As I said, kinda loosely "categorise"

And I don't think it's a load of old wank, people gravitate towards people they assume they have something in common with; clothing, hair etc are the first impression and therefore the first insight into one's character.

People judge by the cover, it's a fact.

They do but are wrong to do so. People just don't fit so snugly into moulds like that. Not people worth knowing anyway. I just don't identify with any particular defined social group and never have. I value actual individuality too highly to besmirch it that way. Which probably makes me a hipster wanker or summat :D

(just to make clear - i am not a hipster ;))

(but am a wanker)

Back when such things seemed to matter to the people around me I tended to get on best with goths, ravers, hippies, crusties and grebos, I suppose. I struggle with tracksuits and trainers but has been demonstrated to me since that they're not all bellends.

There is definitely no obligatory goth phase

I have to admit to referring to myself as a mod in the very early 80's, post that I have never identified myself with any group in that way.

On reflection I probably joined Max's moaning old git some years back ....as did SHM

A passage of "Watching The English" by Kate Fox said:
... Under the microscope, our much-vaunted eccentricity is not quite as admirably individual, original and creative as we might wish. Most of what passes for English sartorial eccentricity turns out, on closer inspection, to be rather sheep-like conformity.
But still - we do at least appreciate and value originality, and we can take some pride in the collective eccentricity of our street-fashions.

We are at our best when we are 'in uniform' but rebelling just slightly against it, refusing to take ourselves too seriously, indulging that peculiarly English talent for self-deprecating humour. We may lack the sartorial fluency of other nations, and our dress sense may be laughable, but fortunately we have a sense of humour, so we can always laugh at ourselves.
Fantastic read - I recommend it highly :)

people do stuff they shouldn't all the time! Doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
I ask that question as it's (or so I thought) an easy way to get to know people.
Obviously it relies on certain assumptions to be made.

Can we please delete the thread? It's been taken too seriously. Plus no fucker knows the song.

No, it's a great thread.

I know the song. I know lots of songs.

Really, it's a great thread though. better than the fucking "I love soapbar, who's with me?" rally-cry one even.. =D

Baby/bath water.

Don't mind me - am a paid up member of the moany auld git club :D

Just getting in my traditional whinge at the whole concept of trying to put people into neat lil boxes is all. Most folk here are considerably less whiney than me ;)

And although I couldn't name the tune offhand I do likes me a lil Carter USM. Think folk who liked them usually got classed as crusties at my college.

Oi. Fuck off. I'm a Gothic.

That reminds me so much of a fella who used to pontificate on this topic in the common room. I can't really explain why it's so funny cos it would make me sound evil but suffice to say that line really has made me snigger excessively =D

My boyfriend wears my underwear all the time, it's proper sexy

Over half of my clothes were originally intended to be worn by women if that helps with the categorisation. No undies though.
