Are you a smoker?
If not, and you're willing to take a chance at being addicted to nicotine, try smoking a single roll your own cigarette (they're stronger) right before bedtime and you will have lucid dreams that are very psychedelic, almost like tripping only in your dreams.
If you're a smoker, you can try and quit using patches, but put them on right before you go to bed for the dreams. You will dream like crazy and I've found it particularly useful, even more useful than other psychedelics for personal problem solving stuff. Nothing quite like getting deep into yourself and remembering a night of spelunking in your own minds deepest corners.
The only other trip I thought was productive like nicotine was when I purposely went to sleep and set my alarm for two hours out (10pm) and when the alarm went off, I just woke up, took the hits of acid, and then went right back to sleep (all groggy)... several hours later, I woke up about in the peak. That was incredible. It was really amazing to be able to remember all these deep things that I normally don't have much access to.
Those e cigarettes would be best of course since the cancer causing chemicals aren't there, aside from nicotine which probably does cause cancer all by itself though in the quantities we're talking here that's probably not a concern.
However, be careful, don't get addicted to nicotine, it's just about the hardest thing to kick ever. And I've kicked quite a few bad habits over the years being a chronic pain patient. The two that stand out as the most damaging are clearly alcohol and tobacco with meth and opiates closely following.
With tobacco, when I smoke, I'm careful not to do it more than once a week. Hard rule. Do it three days in a row and it could be thirty years before you quit the hard way.
Be safe.
