What is killing the rave scene in America?

I know a few people who have quit the rave scene recently because they've gotten tired of what the scene represents, the fact that it's almost totally opposite from what it used to be. It's not really the simple fact that there's no PLUR anymore, it's all the violence that has taken its place. Like why the hell does anybody have a reason to get stabbed at a massive for? And the underground parties aren't much safer, in fact in many cases it has been SECURITY who's been involved in the fights! You can't feel safe anymore going to a party, and I think maybe the drum n bass scene had a big part to do with it, because the genre of music is somewhat similar in style and rhythm to hip hop beats.

Speaking from personal experience, everytime I'm in the drum n bass room, I always see a bunch of gangsters on PCP and shit in there. People in that room just seem more easily irritated, snap at a moment's notice, they act like they've been up for days or something.

I know this is going to apply to certain areas of the world because of culture, but if anybody else has experienced similar things at raves, please share your experiences. What are your opinions on the scene? How does it compare to where you are?

I don't think it is drum and bass that killing off the rave scene. The scene differs dramatically depending on where you are. I've been in America for 5 years now and I have noticed that the scene is very different depending on club/genre,etc. Drum and bass does tend to attract a bit of a different crowd than say happy hardcore or trance will.

Another thing to take note of is that the scene is attracting people that don't just go there to eat some ecstasy or acid. People go there to just drink and listen to music, meth is becoming more prominent, etc. PCP is probably one of the more rare drugs seen out there now. People on PCP are not as bad as all that either, it is just the drug everyone loves to hate.

Venue has a lot to do with it too. Try some outdoor festivals, you might be pleasantly surprised.

could you be more specific i don't think what you're talking about applies to all of america, you talking about socal or what?

It takes more and more drugs to successfully pretend that the scene didn't die at least three years ago - but once you're fucked up, it's like the party never stopped! :D

Hey, where are there massives in North America? I'm sure they're not the same, but it'd be cool to know...

America's collectively short socio-cultural attention span.

:)

drum and bass gangsterism has been part of the british rave scene since... well, since jungle began.

Not to mention that there were some proper bad boys hanging around the rave scene even before DnB. Think of the whole Manchester/Gunchester scene.

And damn JJ for posting that before I had a chance to.

I think it depends on both your outlook and the party you go to.

I went to a bad ass outdoor rave recently over the summer in LA, and wow, it was unbelievable. Incredible amount of peace and love -- I mean, I just wandered to random campsites over the course of the night and partook in at least ten different hookah/weed circles. Everyone sharing, et cetera. One guy brought a super gigantic tent with pillows, bean bags, blankets, and everything for random wandering psychonauts. Hell, the people running the place had free food for everyone and free water.

The whole vibe of the place was like a magical forest, with trees everywhere and insane light shows and projection screens. If they keep having parties like this, I couldn't even fathom where people get crazy ideas like the scene is dead. Plus, like I said about the outlook -- I always seem to have a good time even at shittier parties. I just enjoy being there, taking drugs, partying, and being everyone's friend. That's what I'm there to do.

if anybody has gone to any desert raves in so cal, specifically over at a place that rhymes with "branch," then you'll know what im talking about. that place is fucked up lol. you could be caught dealing black tar heroin and security wouldnt give a shit (unless you were selling bigger amounts than theirs, then they would take ur shit). i got caught by 3 security guards shooting up in the dirt, at the most perfect moment too--RIGHT as i was registering and drew back blood, so there was no fucking way i was gonna pull out lololol. i was already k'ed out of my mind and when they shined the light on me and i didnt budge until after i hit, the guards were like "WAT THE FUCK!" and just started busting their asses off laughing hahaha. ok that part was pretty funny but i have seen some security members join a fight and help beat the shit out of someone before, like 5 against 1. i mean damn if security is kicking ur ass too then nobodys gonna help you.

fuck, i dont even wanna know about the raves that go on in santiago canyon. you know how many dead bodies turn up missing there? ive actually known people to go party there for the purpose of scaring the living shit out of themselves rofl. "cause paranoia potentiates the trip man...." ahhahahahahah gd man, fuck that shit

Lmao! Thats fucking awsome girl. Glad to hear Im not the only one who has lift up the needle at a rave or club besides from the DJ.

Now about the rave scene. I totally feel you on the whole D'n'B shit. From my expereince they tend to be the scum of the electronic music scene. They are the most jaded angry fucks I have ever encountered at raves and clubs alike from my neck of the woods over here in the Tri-State area. Try to stick to raves that focus more on trance if you want some of that good old fashioned PLUR.

Arguably the Sydney scene is headed in that direction however it is not that far gone. No one is being stabbed (yet, or at least with no reason) but plenty of people are fighting and stealing and can't handle their gear. Over here, the problem is often being blamed on 'gabber', however I strongly disagree as the true hardcore followers probably aren't at the raves in which trouble arises.

I don't think you can blame any particular music style or drug for the death of rave. Every scene blames its more aggressive sub-scene and/or its poison of choice. For you it's DnB and PCP. For Sydney, it's hardcore and methamphetamine. For Melbourne it's GHB. There's always a scapegoat.

The reason this sort of trouble occurs at parties is because the parties are not promoted as peaceful gatherings but rather hard, fast and nasty assaults on the senses. Here is a snippet from the flyer of one of the more troublesome parties that has happened this year:

Like it hard, fast and dirty? We do too, so when ****** celebrates its first birthday this October, we want you there for a sensational night of dancefloor demolition and crazy party antics. Bring a spare set of ears because you’re going to need them!
******** will be bringing out the big guns in the dark arts of dance - hardstyle, hard trance, gabber, hard dance and everything in-between. The more fucked up and frenetic it is, the more we love it!

*Event names deleted

What happened at that party? Fights and theft in the arena, at the train station before and after the event, in the chill area, young kids running around on drugs, you name it. Police and sniffer dogs pretending to filter out the scum and as a result drug prices almost doubled that night.

What I would love to do is destroy the scene completely and rebuild it from scratch. This time where will be no bullshit.

Whether or not I get around to that is another issue.
