what genre is big in your city?

Minneapolis

fucking everything sucks here for music. this is coming from a musician too. bands are shitty (except a few), and electronic stuff really isn't popular here anymore. this city is in desperate need of a music overhaul.

Too bad, this place used to have more too offer.

its been alot of minimal tech and house here in the big D-troit.

Baltimore - Breaks are huuuge here, dnb has a big scene, but thers alot of Baltimore Club, which is like grungy industrial rap breaks combo

Breaks is pretty much the dominant genre in my area.

The biggest local dj is my boy Dj Switch. He runs that shit.

I live in my bedroom mostly. Hardcore dominates this area.

in syd..

breaks had there time ages ago and before that was house

breaks is pretty much dead now and electro is king

(not a big electro fan)

fortunately prog and techno are coming slowly back into fashion :)

(fan)

p.s. good techno like schumacher and beyer not nik skitz lol

Melbourne has everything...

Dubstep has been starting to get a play (not huge yet), shame is that most people at clubs don't really dig it, even if they might listen at home. It's hard to dance to I guess.

DnB is still is and has always been pumping.

Breaks is not nearly as big as it once was, but there's pretty much a decent breaks night on every night of the week somewhere.

Electro house is MASSIVE at the moment, some of which I can't stand. But the majority is good.

Tech-house and Minimal Techno have been getting pretty damn big lately. Seams like a big party is on somewhere every week with some quality international guests.

Trance I would have no idea about. It was pretty popular like 4-5 years ago. I's say it's not as popular as Electro House because most of the clubs that once played Trance are now playing electro. I s'pose if Armin Van Buuren is playing a stadium here in June it must be pretty big.

St. Paul/Minneapolis - We seem to lean towards mainly DnB (one local venue with weekly shows that bring in big names). Also some house/acid house which mixes in nicely. Just recently discovered a 3 day, 100+DJ, outdoor caming event coming up later this summer where I will willingly sacrifice my ability to hear for about a month. So I am very glad to see that the underground scene is still kickin' around these parts...

Philadelphia has nothing going for it, anymore... Everyone once in a while, they rave crowd is doing something, the clubs are pretty weak.

There is some good dubstep trying to happen, blowing up all over though.

You must be looking in the wrong places sir. Within three hours of searching teh intarweb I found enough shows/events (electronic music, DnB, house, etc.) within a 4hr radius to keep me busy and broke all summer...

philadelphia sucksssss.

there are like two clubs, shampoo being the most well-known. I think we got van Dyk there, once. Maybe. Mostly its local DJ's who spin that kandy-kid raver look-at-me-i-were-75-muiltcolored-bracelets-and-suck-on-pacifiers bull shit.

y'all want the REAL trance/house/DnB hub of the tri-state area, go no further than my den ;)

You just said that you were tired of the kandy-kid raver look-at-me-i-were-75-muiltcolored-bracelets-and-suck-on-pacifiers bull shit.

and then in the same breath, you said there was TRANCE at your house. It gets no more Kandy Kid than that.

Melbourne (Australia), and the music has taken a turn for the worst IMHO. :(

It used to be hard not to find great techno/prog/house/breakbeat, but it's all come together with this hybrid electro/hoover/house type sound which is going completely bonkers, even moreso with all this pseudo-minimal music going around, and to be honest, I'm not into it at all, so much so that I've stopped going to clubs all together.

I was never into the euphoric (cheese) type trance, but I always liked the more "underground" melodic techno, dark prog stuff, and it made for good parties, these days it's all shit drugs and shit music and the vibe is completely gone.

I'm looking at getting a few people together to put on a semi-regular "good music" night in my town, I listen to a lot more jazz/dub/older psychedelic sounds these days, and I think it would make for an excellent Friday evening in a comfortable bar. :)

Id have to say melbourne is going strong with good hardstyle

I think Aural was referring to Happy Hardcore. MUCH more Kandy Kid than trance, like, OBNOXIOUS Kandy Kid style...

Yea, Albany still sucks...

i didn't see if anyone from montreal posted, but anyways, around here, new rave is coming up, its pretty good, as long as you don't listen to it too often, stuff like klaxons and shit disco and the such. otherwise, the electro scene became quite housy, and not always for the best. personally, im more into old heavy funk, we do get our fair share, but still not enough . we also have an awesome thing during the summer on sundays which is called pik nik elektronik, and its basically djs, sometimes very well known, spinning in a huge waterfront park from noon to 8, cover is 5 $ and you can bring your own alcohol. the great thing there is you see people stoned out on mdma dancing near 9 year old kids with no ambiguity or awkwardness or whatever.

by the way, the best parties are always the after hours in sketchy locations where you can play your ipod to the ghetoest of sound systems ever.
and 1 last suggestion for you people : abesses by birdy nam nam, you would have never thought accordion could have soul
