The fastest car I've driven was a Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4. In the mid-80s at work, if we had to go out for the day we could use a manager's company car. I usually ended up with a diesel Orion that drove like a tank but I did get my hands on the Cosworth once. I did 110mph on the M1 then I got scared.

As we have all the car experts dropping in here, I'm looking for views on my next car. I currently drive a Diesel Discovery 2 Auto, I was doing the bulk of my 50 mile round trip commute on my scooter but that's off the cards for the foreseeable future die to an argument with the road.

So I need something more economical, it has to be a decent size and automatic, I really like to stick with 4X4 but I may have to live without it in the name of fuel efficiency.

Yeah man, shame really. The new FT-86 or whatever it's called now was supposed to bring the sportiness back to Toyota... doesn't really tickle my fancy though. Had an older shape GT-Four before that too, not as quick by a long shot but for some reason I liked it more.

I used to have the ST185 myself.
Twas the Carlos Sainz ltd model.

V nice to drive - got alot of time for Toyotas n Lexus's.

BMW diesels have pretty unbeatable power to fuel economy ratios. A post 08 318d touring has a book figure of 62mpg and will do 0-60 in 9.1s, you would probably struggle to find anything else that matches that.

Had a ride in one of the 4 door 4x4 ones in the 90's - fuck me it was quick, proper pulled me back in the seat. Try finding one now that hasn't been bent

The Kia I posted as my ride earlier in the thread got pranged last Friday, got at 61 plate DS3 DStyle 1.6 HDi as a courtesy car, StartStop, Cruise, Black Piano interior - drives well, been ragging it round and still getting 60mpg

I used to have an Audi A4 Avant 1.9TD it was a great drive, but way to small, it had less room inside that the Astra that preceded it. I used to have an old 5 Series and really liked it, I wonder if the 1.8 would be man enough for an auto box? Just looking that 325 looks interesting...thanks:)

I used to have this a few years ago...

320td 150bhp, went like stink, handled great, best car I've ever owned, had 50,000 trouble free miles with it, then the turbo let go on it at 125,000 miles costing £1200. Gutted

What's your budget?

I'd probably go to £20K if I needed to, it's the main family car and I have a fairly long commute as well as a bit of business mileage to cover. I can't be messing around with unreliable, aged motors these days it's often a false economy and way to hassle.

The 3 Series is probably to small as I like a bigger car these days, the 530D looks more my kinda ride, probably have to get some string back gloves and a pipe though;)....and call in sick when in snows

Those seats are naughty :D

I regularly drive a E46 coupe (my gfs, not mine unfortunately) it is a pretty awesome car in every way. mpg drops to near single figures if you are fond of the loud pedal!

The E46 is a great car, my mates got a 2002 320d thats done nearly 400,000 miles
When someone ran into the back of mine I had this for a week as a courtesy car:

330d M Sport. My god what a quick car, handling was in another league to mine

In that case, I'd go for an Audi A6 allroad 2.7 or 3.0TDI, quick, economical, 4x4, slightly jacked up, fully loaded, should get one of those for 20 grand
