Hello SO :)

The question was recently asked of me when I was discussing the fact that my 10-year high school reunion is this October and I'm not sure whether or not to spend the money to revisit the old life. I moved 3000 miles away 5 years ago and haven't really looked back. The people I care about all know where I am and what I'm doing.

What did you want to do when you were in high school (besides smoke weed and make out under the bleachers ;))? What occupation did you see yourself having? Did you have (the dreaded) 5-year plan?

I'm interested in the answers and will provide my own once I've thought it out properly. :)

How funny, I wanted to be a lawyer too! Either that or a teacher :) I personally cant wait for my high school reunion!

Something really dull and computer related (possibly a programmer or similar).

Thank fuck I screwed up my A levels - otherwise I'd have got into university and would have racked up a bill between 50 to 100,000, then got a job sat in front of a screen having 'hilarious' conversations about web based protocols et al.

Back in the day, I wanted to be a doctor. I didn't graduate high school, I was running around selling drugs. I wanted to make it big in the drug game. Well, I saw where that path was headed, quit the drugs, got something similar to a GED (but what was technically a HS diploma), got into college, got on the career track, then got mixed up in drugs again, now I'm a college grad, trying to get my life straightened out again ... now I'm going into a medical-related career (not medicine, though.) Running around, running around, running around in a circle.

Work for a tobacco company. Now that I am getting my bachelors in biochem/biotech that dream might become a reality....

I wanted to be an artist. I always loved drawing, painting, etc., but of course ended up doing something totally different. Went to college for Computer Studies, and ended up doing website design, and computer graphics work. I love it though. Not currently employed, but headed back into an office work type of job.

I wanted to be an accountant. I did work for an accounting firm for awhile after high school and while I was working on my associates degree. I'm glad that I had the opportunity, because it made me realize that being an accountant was not what I wanted to do at all.

Now I am back to square one. :)

Same here. :) I actually followed through and did a degree in fine art after school, but have ended up doing something totally different too (PhD in psych and looking to go into research). I took great delight in dropping all my highschool science and maths classes the second I could, so it's a little ironic that I now spend most of my time immersed in neuroanatomy and statistics.

One day I want to start painting again. I don't think I'll ever give up the idea of being an artist completely.

I always ALWAYS wanted to be a vet, ever since I was about 4 years old.
Then when the time came to actually study hard and get a good enough score in my final exams to actually get into the vet science course at uni, I basically put it into the "too-hard" basket. Couldn't be bothered.
So I became a vet nurse instead!
I still think one day I might go and do the vet science degree at uni as a mature-age student. Maybe after I have kids...

Actually, I didn't even think about the future in HS. I told myself I wasn't ever going to get married and have children; only party 24-7. Boy was I wrong!!

My 10 year is coming up too, but I have no desire to go.

^ My 10 year reunion is this year too...I doubt I'll go. I've kept in touch with all the people I cared about, and thanks to facebook I have a fair idea of what the rest of them are doing anyway. :\

Yep I too have no desire to go to any of my school reunions. Sad but hey, I really don't have anything in common with any of those people anymore, and I feel no need to go and tell them how successful and happy I am blahdy blah blah 8)

By the way StayinAwake, I'm listening to some old hardcore techno and your avatar is bangin to the beat!! =D

I went from wanting to be a journalist, to a kindergarten teacher, to an archaeologist, to a paralegal, to a veterinarian, to a social worker, and back to wanting to be a journalist.

Now I all I know is that I want a job that is challenging, will give me a sense of accomplishment, and I'll wake up to the feeling of wanting to go to work (if that exists). :)

I wanted to be a lawyer, which when I think about it now is just laughable. The thought of me having a career in the stuffy legal profession chills my very bones. No disrespect to any lawyers here present, of course... ;)

Quite a change from the field that I eventually ended up studying & working in, which is far more suited & stimulating to me as a person.

I've often wondered just how many people who, when asked to make their career choice at such a tender age, found themselves locked on a road that didn't really suit them & had difficulty changing direction in years to come. It's a sobering thought.
