what p_d said. Ecstasy is an established BRAND, and alot of effort went into making MDMA as popular as it has become. from a purely marketing standpoint, new drugs will have to compete for, pardon the pun, consumer mindspace.
i venture to guess some "new" PEA's will emerge from the research scene into wider circulation clubs included, given increased availability from say Chinese suppliers, with legal (illegalizing) infrastructure continuing to lag by ~2 years (window of opportunity?) but few will become popular due to simply not having the recreational, empathogenic and general "party" value of Ecstasy.
as for nanotech, while the theoretics are in place (for those interested in "nannites" etc, Nanomedicine by Robert A. Freitas Jr is a grreat read), applicability remains ~20 years away, given rather optimistic growth projections. major apps now are still in materials science.
electrostim / brainwave generator devices / software show promise, although after experience with many over the years, from weird sunglasses to multimillion dollar, state classified machines involving tech you'll never see, i have yet to find one that reliably produces desired / predictable outcomes, and taking a SWAG, this will be the case for ~10 years.
on the other hand, i bet my Tony Lamas that BIG PHARMA has memorised and improved upon both of Shulgin's books, as well as all of Nicchols et al, and has a booty of goodies aimed not at relieving symptoms of disease but at making you feel good (and more) that will boggle 'ya primate ass mind (Viagra the first precedent), just awaiting the changing of policy, which they contribute to shaping.
think about it, they've been missing out on all the $$ from the illegal drug trade aimed at the "therapeutic" outcomes above described.
