hi,
well i have to say that zolpidem/"ambien" doesn't work for me. It no longer even makes me drowsy, & it didn't keep me asleep; it would wear off after 1-2 hours.
I find now a combination of sedatives help with getting to sleep. If however you are new to using meds with sedative qualities to get to sleep, then i recommend using the least addictive ones first.
I personally find that a combination of 50mg promethazine, 60mg mirtazapine & ~20mg-40mg of nitrazepam really helps me sleep quite well. The promethazine & mirtazapine aren't addictive, but i am dependent on the nitrazepam ((although i only rarely use it to get to sleep; it is an excellent anti-anxiety drug; although it does have a rather long half-life, but nothing like diazepam)). Or you could substitute the nitrazepam with the same amount of diazepam; i find all benzo's have basically the same effect ((although for some reason i don't find temazepam or alprazolam particularly effective; i'd take diazepam and/or nitrazepam anyday over temazepam & alprazolam -although i do prefer benzo's with longer half-lives..)).
Promethazine is OTC, and (where i am from), comes in 25mg (blue) tablets. Mirtazapine is an antidepressant, & whilst it has done jack shit for depression, it does help me sleep....i only add benzo's when im particularly anxious & unable to sleep....
I have also recently been taking trifluoperazine/"stelazine" for anxiety ((it sucks, one of my Dr's actually chose this drug over benzo's!)), but i get bad side effects from it ((i feel like im burning up in relatively 'light' sunlight; and i get diahorrea even though im also on methadone (!!!) & have to take loperamide when ever i take trifluoperazine....so im gonna come off it, but 1mg-2mg really helps me sleep; i sleep for 10-11 hours after taking that (in addition to the promethazine & mirtazapine).....i woudn't recommend taking antipsychotics for sleep; just cos of their nasty side effects...
just my 2c.....what ever helps you can really be a god-send compared to chronic insomnia...getting a good nights sleep REALLY makes you feel so much better....
