what are the best prescription sleeping pills?

if you have built tolerance to ambien, try one of the more sedating benzodizepines my doctor gave me Temazepam 15mg but i have tolerance so they didnt do shit, so I got fucked up off them... all the other meds i can think of have side effects, Trazadone dosent have to bad side effects and 50mg usally works.

I have tried every prescription and OTC substance in the USA.
I find that the diphenhydramine HCL (antihistamine) based OTC meds. exacerbate my restlessness. Unisom manufactures an alternative that has worked fairly well for me in the past. I cannot recall the name of the active ingredient. It is the ingredient in the pill form, not the gel cap form.

The non-benadryl OTC sleeping pills usually are doxylamine succinate, the same sedating antihistamine in NyQuil.

An interesting tidbit, the generic (and I think even name brand) Unisom doxylamine succinate tabs look just like xanax 1 mg footballs. Wonder why they make it like that?

hi,

well i have to say that zolpidem/"ambien" doesn't work for me. It no longer even makes me drowsy, & it didn't keep me asleep; it would wear off after 1-2 hours.

I find now a combination of sedatives help with getting to sleep. If however you are new to using meds with sedative qualities to get to sleep, then i recommend using the least addictive ones first.

I personally find that a combination of 50mg promethazine, 60mg mirtazapine & ~20mg-40mg of nitrazepam really helps me sleep quite well. The promethazine & mirtazapine aren't addictive, but i am dependent on the nitrazepam ((although i only rarely use it to get to sleep; it is an excellent anti-anxiety drug; although it does have a rather long half-life, but nothing like diazepam)). Or you could substitute the nitrazepam with the same amount of diazepam; i find all benzo's have basically the same effect ((although for some reason i don't find temazepam or alprazolam particularly effective; i'd take diazepam and/or nitrazepam anyday over temazepam & alprazolam -although i do prefer benzo's with longer half-lives..)).

Promethazine is OTC, and (where i am from), comes in 25mg (blue) tablets. Mirtazapine is an antidepressant, & whilst it has done jack shit for depression, it does help me sleep....i only add benzo's when im particularly anxious & unable to sleep....

I have also recently been taking trifluoperazine/"stelazine" for anxiety ((it sucks, one of my Dr's actually chose this drug over benzo's!)), but i get bad side effects from it ((i feel like im burning up in relatively 'light' sunlight; and i get diahorrea even though im also on methadone (!!!) & have to take loperamide when ever i take trifluoperazine....so im gonna come off it, but 1mg-2mg really helps me sleep; i sleep for 10-11 hours after taking that (in addition to the promethazine & mirtazapine).....i woudn't recommend taking antipsychotics for sleep; just cos of their nasty side effects...

just my 2c.....what ever helps you can really be a god-send compared to chronic insomnia...getting a good nights sleep REALLY makes you feel so much better....

normally i use stillnox but if im desperate 100mg of seroquel will do although u gotta be really tired because its an anti-psychotic and u dont want to be awake on it u feel really weird

the trick with a lot of RX sleeping meds is that they simply lose efficiency the longer you are prescribed them. I have noticed this in most every one.

Ambien was so-so while Seraquil knocked my ass out and seemed to have the most recreational value - too bad the lot of them are hardly recreational at all :\

my experience of sleepers

I have been on quite a few different sleeping pills over the last 5 or 6 years, prescription and non-prescription. Here's the nitty gritty:
  • Phenergan - antihistamine based, did sweet f.a.
  • Zopiclone 7.5mg - worked well for a while but soon became tolerant - also gave me the night munchies 8o
  • Zolpidem - worked wonders! But only for a few months until, yet again, I became tolerant
  • Lormetazepam - did absolutely nothing for me
  • Trazadone - wahhhhhh! horrible horrible drug! It was like being in a coma but awake - could hear and see what was going on around me but couldn't speak or move. freaked me out. 8o
  • Mirtazapine - knocked me out like a light. but weight gain was an unwanted side effect
  • Temazepam 10 mg - at last! something that worked! but i abused it, getting in from other sources besides my doctor, and this screwed up my sleep even more.
I am still prescribed temazepam along with 5mg diazepam at night. It does nothing for me now. I have been on this dose almost a year and become completely tolerant. I so wish I could find something that would knock me out like a light. Maybe my doctor will come up with something. Cos I know he wants me to come off my benzos. Knowing my luck he'll give me zopiclone.

Mind you, I am not sleeping more than 4 hours a night even with temazepam, cos I take stimulant drugs etc. and 10mg temaz and 5mg diaz isn't enough to bring me down enough to get a good night's sleep.

I have tried alternative remedies and over the counter stuff too. Nytol (diphendydramine?! Something like that) but it does nothing but turn me into a zombie...

The best sleep I ever had was when I took temazepam with bacardi! :| :| :|

thanks for all the replies. I think that I should have been more specific about my situation.

I did go to a sleep clinic about 4 years ago

turns out That i have narcolepsy

The type that I have entails the following
--- I completely miss my first two stages of sleep and within 60 seconds of falling asleep, I fall iinto REM sleep and remain in it for the entire night. This produces poor sleep, which makes me sleepy all day long'
---- the other shitty thing about this is that it is damn near immpossible to fall asleep when you don't experience the forst two stages. Just jumping right into dream land isn't easy.

I'm currently prescribed GHB / "Xyrem" which I take twice a night. This alters my sleep patterns to more normal stage transition. It actually produces restful sleep. The thing is that it doesn't put me to sleep. also, it is so addictive, that i have to take benzos durring the day to deal with the shakes.

my doc will give me any drug that I ask for.

meditation seems to help but i don't have the discapline for it every night

is trazadone an MAOI????

how does it work?

-----------

in response to one of the posts, binge sleeping is the only alternative for some people..... yes a sleep test is a good idea... but don't be so quick to judge

i've tried
sonota
ambien
miratrazasomething
amitryptaline
b

benzos work, but they are addictve

i'm looking for something I won't gain a tollerence to... does that exist?

5:49am , still up , just took another 10mg of Ambien . I HATE INSOMNIA !!!

Buspar is something else that is somewhat effective... if all else fails, Haldol (lol, talk about shitty side effects)

mmm...i love sonata 10mg's ...preferably snorted
but since i feel to guilty to ask my doctor for more of them, i take tylenol pm's...although they are no comparisson to sonata
