We Love Cricket Thread 2nd Innings

Adam Gilchrist (Australia)
96 Tests, 5,570 runs at 47.60 and 379 catches, 37 stumpings

7. Alan Knott (England, CY 1970, wkt) 95 Tests, 4,389 runs at 32.75, 250 catches, 19 stumpings

Even if you ignore the game changing batting of Gilchrist it's still no contest. If you were choosing keeping skills alone you can't go past Jeffery Dujon.

W G was immense in his time. He was so much better than anyone else for most of his forty year career. Not forgetting actually officially played as an amateur against professionals of the day.

you can't compare stumpings over a generation, batting techniques and expected run rate had changed to such a degree it makes doing so pointless. also, gilchrist had some of the greatest bowlers of all time to help beat the bat

don't get me wrong, i think he's great, probably my favourite cricketer of all time, and a game changer. but he wasn't the equal of knot behind the stumps, sorry

w.g was indeed great, but i would have either of my three alternatives over him in an all time test XI. i do concede he absolutely murdered county attacks. its unfortunate a more direct comparison cannot be made

You cant compare uncover wickets to todays flat dry tacks either. In county cricket W G averaged 60 odd and the next closest was only averaging 30. It was the age of the bowler yet no one could pin him down.

Grace averaged 60 because he was a cheat ("they've come to watch me bat, not you give me out")

Gilchrist had Warne and short boundaries.

Short boundaries? We are talking test cricket here and I can tell you the MCG is still a long slog during Boxing Day. I would argue that Warner's variation and ability to beat a batsmen would be just as difficult to keep against as it was to bat. I would also say that the caught behind means nothing, but stumpings are what defines a wicketkeeper and Gilchrist is double that of knott. Just admit it knotts vote is a MCC ring in.

Yeah I'm just a mouthpiece for an MCC conspiracy.

You kinda suffer in this debate by not having any first hand experience, let alone TV, of seeing Knott whereas I was brought up with him as England's keeper and he's the first wicket keeper I ever saw in action. You say stumpings define a keeper but refuse to acknowledge that Gilchrist had the greatest ever spinner of all time to keep to, while Knott had Derek Underwood for his whole career. Nothing wrong with Underwood, nearly 300 wickets in 80+ tests, but hardly any of those wickets were stumped because Underwood's 'spin' was bowled at around 80mph. And that was his flighted slower ball. You don't get too many stumpings bowling like that.

And don't give me the MCG as typical of test match grounds around the world. Boundaries have been brought in a long way globally, from Knott's era to Gilchrist's.

And btw, I love Adam Gilchrist. A nicer sportsman must be impossible to find in Australia. Sure beats the shit out of racist Campese.

Meanwhile

Faf is in charge of shining the ball

4.01pm The umpires are calling Graeme Smith, the South African captain, for a little chat about something, but its not quite clear what the issue is. The fourth umpire is out there with a new set of balls. And yes, it looks like the ball has been changed and a five-run penalty has been awarded to Pakistan

If you think being a racist is campese's biggest flaw then you don't know much about him. I don't know one team mate who actually liked him and he wasn't flooded with commentary job offers when he retired for good reason. He is a rent an opinion who couldn't tackle.

I have to admit I have a cricket boner right now. One more sleep until the first ball of the first ashes test.

I actually have a ticket for tomorrow, on the off chance that my afternoon would fall apart and I could catch the last session. Unfortunately work is crazy busy so I'm just going to give it to the first patient I think deserves it. I have a ticket for Friday though. I guess that might be a sign I'm a cricket tragic :(

My predictions for the first Test;
Perfect conditions all day until it storms late afternoon.
Steve smith won't score any runs
Pietersen will get booed all day
The world record for a beer snake will be broken, perhaps not on day one but most likely day 2
Watson will bowl 3.3 overs before pulling a heart-alige and miss the rest of the series

LOL! Just watching SSN & saw Harmisons famous 3rd slip Ashes opening ball .

I can't wait , i rekon Mitchell Johnson is likely to bowl something similar . The boy is a tad exited atm .

.
''You'd rather get the wicket more than anything, you get a lot of joy out of that when you get a player like that out. I [had] a look at last summer and Sangakkara was an example. I've busted his finger and he's one of their best players, so they were one short and I got a couple of those in the middle order. If you can't get them out, that's the second option.''

Pussies all too scared to make real predictions. Mouths, money etc.

I'll go for a drawn series. My suspicions are that England are not as superior as most people think, but you have to couple that with the fact Aus are really shit and aren't exactly well placed to capitalise on England being below par. See last series.

What I want is England to be above par, for Cook and Pietersen to score mega hundreds and humiliate them like last time. 500-1. That's going to be hard to top.

It will come down to whether Australia can score any runs. The last series was decided by Australian top order batting collapses at least one innings each test. Warner and Watson will decide this. If either of the openers score runs then Australia have plenty of bowlers competing for a place in the team.

The Gabba is a great venue to watch test cricket. 40 000 odd sell out for the first three days creates a great atmosphere. Bonus is the German club across the road for Steins on tap during the lunch and tea break.

Two straight days at the cricket. 89/7. Lyon is getting plenty of bounce day two. Imagine having to bat last.

My favourite call from the crowd, "I'd rather have a root than the trots". Got a smile out of Jonathan fielding at fine leg.
