Rightly heralded as one of the best console games ever, this one title took side scrolling platformers to a whole new dimension.

Back in 97 i became obssessed with it, and clocked the game finding all 120 stars. Since then i've had it emulated on pc's but havn't paid that much attention.

A couple months ago i dloaded it onto my wii's virtual console and became obssessed again. I once again completed 120 stars recently, and i loved almost every second on it.

mario sunshine took it even further, but can hardly be considered breakthrough. i hope mario galaxy knocks my socks off.

mario 64 continues to be my favourite game ever

i remember being in 8th grade in 96 and staying up way past my middle school bedtime playing it

ive gotten 120 about 6 times but i like getting through the game with as little effort, stars, and time

whats your favorite level i like shifting sands

shifting sands was great. i had a mad hit of nostalgia when i revisited it recently.

but i love the bowser levels best

nah I never really got into this, doesn't feel like mario should for me for some reason.

the three dimensional mario games were great (though sunshine was annoying at points with poor explanations for what you needed to do), but they don't match the magic of the 2-d games for me. maybe its nostalgia, but super mario world is my all time favorites, and number three is a close second.

that being said i can't wait for galaxy.

love/hate

confused

i swear I still have dreams taking place in mario64 world sometimes

weird

One of my favorite games ever. Was going through a pot binge at the time, playing this game was a major part of my daily routine haha. The difficulty level was pitched perfectly so it never got frustrating and the level design was so good it was enjoyable going back to get extra stars.

^indeed

and how good did it feel back in 1997 to run behind bowser and swing him around by his tail! on top of that when he'd jump and tilt the stage was stunning to my senses on this, the first real 3d platformer.

^fuck NO best 64 game next to starfox

but thats because i cant play first person games and the controller needs to be inverted for me

yes im weird

n64 had some excellent titles. mario 64, mario kart 64, starfox, goldeneye were all spectacular. kart and goldeneye are still some of the best four player gaming i've ever had (next to the original Doom on PC)

Multiplayer on Mariokart and Goldeneye got to ridculious standards. I remember playing levels like the facility with proximity mine, we had the game so down the whole level would be ready to blow within a minute of it starting. Good times

^^^Oh yeah! Awesome stuff. I was always forbidden to EVER use Proximity mines. They used to get pissed that every time they walked through a door or picked up a weapon things went boom. That and being chased and throwing bombs behind me as I ran. No one would take me on with knives either though.

I was never a huge Starfox fan but damn Kart was an awesome game.

Kart is awesome.

My favorite level in Mario 64 was the Flying Cap level.

who's up for a wii mario kart (whatever it's called) bluelight online multplayer league when it comes out? :D

battle royale motherfucker

I loved Mario 64 but Perfect Dark (so much better than Golden Eye) was the best game ever. Awesome blood effects and the myriad of customisation options in the multiplayer (combat simulator) part literally kept me playing for years.
