Video Game Discussion

picked up my preorderd copy of GTA Vice City Stories yesterday and man, despite all the news my mate has read and talked about it in the past several months, the first basic stage has already pleasantly surprised me.

now seriously planning to exchange my ps2 and a whole bunch of games to cover the cost of the Wii for it's early december release.

aaaaaggggghhhhh i can't wait for that goddamned wii. the place here cancelled the midnight release so i have to wait ten extra hours to play zelda. those motherfuckers.

Wait, there's a new Zelda out? Is it available for the Cube?

I need to pay better attention..

wii cost completely cover with trade ins...... can't fuckin wait.

BA, new zelda is released with the wii system. Exchange your cube. The Wii can play cube discs and download nes, snes, n64, sega megadrive and other games.

Check out the vids of Super Mario Galaxy at ign.com. fuckin sweet man

anyone else lovin it? I just had my first two player game. fuckin sweet. Over ten hours of play so far, and up to 16% complete.

MANY nuisances of previous incarnations have been fixed.

I don't know if I can take another GTA game, I havn't seen a real sequal yet since their first game. Seriously, they need to put some real fucking effort into a new engine and actually making a number 2 in their series not this same crap over and over.

My favourites definitely include the Silent Hill series, the Tomb Raider series, and Vagrant Story.

Tomb raider kinda fucked up between 4 and 6, but the 7th seems to be picking up. I haven't played too far into it (my computer kinda faultered in the beginning of the 2nd level).

I used to be HUGE into the Final Fantasy series, but between 9 and 11 it lost its magic. However, I'm playing FFXII now and I love it - probably because it is made by the same team that made FFT and Vagrant Story.

man i dont get the worlds obsession with final fantasy. to me those games are like a really, really cool story presented by using the next button on the dvd player to get to each subsequent part. sometimes you have to press the next button lots of times for it to proceed. i think theyre cool in their own right, but damn FF is one of the most popular series in the industry. But i know most gamers are drooling right now over the new release...

i just got WoW the other day, bunch of my cousins got me in some stealther pvp guild. It has certianly come a long way from when I beta tested it. game is ok, aside from being 98% the same exact damned thing as an everquest faction wars server, except with fewer classes and races, simpler class design, and lower quality artwork/graphics. I like a lot of the animation work tho but most of the actual models are just flat out pathetic. I know Blizzard's art teams have their own specific style, but they could EASILY maintain that style and make quality models/shaders/textures.

A lot of the game engine's functions WRT combat are pretty simplified, like collision detection vs another opponent and detecting direction, poliginal face detection, etc. For example a weapon style listed as "back" really just means anythign in negative direction of target's front face and below 0 to pi radians. Meaning you can basically be on someone's side and attack their shoulder and its still a backstab. Thats one example of many ive found but overall a lot of the core engine functionality is very oversimplified, and i dont know if thats just to make it more of a carebare game or just cuz they have a lazy implementation team. Not like im sitting here saying id like to try and do better, but still relative to other MMOG producers out there, blizzard is really lowering the standards (as they typically do).

They do have a realy KICKASS user interface. I really dont think navigating any aspect of the game could be easier to learn and use. I really like the ease of control as well as customization options, only improvement I would have is allow opacity changes (again, something i consider pretty standard).

Its a pretty impressive world theyve created, it certainly has the full warcraft 3 flavor, which I love in all its corniness. Evil monsters and such remind me of somethign out of a gwar concert, minus blood and gore - just for the sake of goofyness.

Classes do have awesoem customization ability. Theres enough unique ways to spec your toons out that its quite possible to have a completely unique set of tools at your disposal than anyone else in your class. Unfortunately it seems liek FOTM syndrome is still the norm, but that isnt the developers' fault at all.

One thing im not feeling too well is Blizzard's concept of "endgame." In MMOGverse, endgame should be concievably unreachable. Certainly youll have your handfull of basement dwelleing automatons who game 24/7 and scoff the idea of being unable to max out, but for the majority of subscribers that amount of game time would have to come along with welfare of some sort. The PVP system, IMO, gives no real reward to players and is really just bragging rights. There is a TON of room for developers to take this and turn it into a great endgame. As it stands, your "endgame" is a series of rediculously hard quests (raids) that give you some badass loot. The term endgame implies a continuous concept of player involvement, not an actual ending of what you can/can not do lol. But then again, the game is still in its earlier days, and is only about to release its very 1st expansion. Cant critique it too deeply just yet.

Its a great game and im sure ill stick with it long enough to have a sellable account (thank you ebay!), but, I do have that feeling in the back of my head that im just playing EQ all over again.

^ careful bro hahaha.. While I walked away 800 or so bucks richer after having sold my account, I kinda lost myself in WoW for a good year. Game is mad addicting in its own simple way. While not as hardcore as UO/EQ or other older games, it offers endless timesinks / grinds to keep you busy for months on end.

And whatever you do don't get into the PVP rank/honor grind. Goodlord that fucked me up pretty bad for awhile..

Oh and don't get involved in raiding. Its a fucking nightmare. Making raids every day at Xoclock and staying for 4 hours to get an item / week if that while dealing with a bunch of morons on a day to day basis.. real life is much more rewarding.

BTW dude this is Psychonaut777 from a few years ago. We used to chat a lot on bluelight but I took a break from this place while finishing up school. =P

The only reason WoW isn't as detailed as EQ is because it hasn't been out very long. If you played EQ before the first expansion you'd know what I was talking about. The original game was amazing for it's time but WoW easily beats stand alone EQ without expansions. EverQuest has like 8 expansions now or something, of course it's more detailed and well done than WoW at the moment.

Think about it. The level cap in WoW is being increased from 60 to 70 in the first expansion. The level cap in EQ was increased from 50 to 60 in the first expansion. They both add a new continent. WoW is following the same formula that EQ used with minor variations.

I think WoW will grow to be a great dungeon raiding type game but the PvP will be lacking unless they start to really change things around. Battlegrounds are only so much of PvP in these games. There needs to be world PvP with a true reason or reward. I want to see a PvP server where you can attack everyone even your own team and you get to take items from people you kill.

aanallein, if you don't grind PvP rank or raid what else would you do in WoW at level 60? =P

WoW is fucking boring at level 60 right now.. can't wait for that first expansion, so much money to be made selling accounts! Although I've heard there won't be normal experience in the expansion, all leveling will be done through quest lines. If so it'll be hard to bot.

Anyway, I've been playing Medieval 2: Total Wars. I originally got it for the detailed and realistic battle scenes but when I started playing I kept finding myself clicking the "automatically determine winner" button and just focusing on conquering the world map. It's a pretty fun real time strategy game but it's starting to get repetative if some new technology doesn't appear soon. I've taken over about 1/4 of the world so far so I have to guess there is more to see.

Battlefield 2142 is awesome as well even if it is just a mod for Battlefield 2. Machine guns that get more accurate as you shoot? Sounds good :)

Well I got rank 12 when it was hard.. now its a joke. My guild had between 20-25 grandmarshals and the last week I pvp'd heavy we were rushing 2 people to GM in a week and they needed me on 24/7 since my character was godly (Ashkandi warrior with every concievable item back when warriors were overpowered). I stayed up 4 days in a row with no stims at all, not even caffiene and earned 1 million CP in that 4 days.. The guy pushed to GM got two fucking million CP. LOL. He got 453,000 in a single day.

As for raiding the guild I was in for ~14 months is now on Sapphiron.. will probly have KelThuzad down in a few weeks. We raided 5-6 days a week for 4-5 hours. It took a shitload of my life.

The thing is theres no way to casually get anywhere in the end game. Of course I took it to extremes as I had to have everything in the game maxed out and every possible item/enchant, etc.. but even still. Being part of a raiding guild or trying for high pvp rank will consume so much time its absurd.

Overall I think they are ruining the game with the expansion though so I'm glad I got out while I did. Only thing I regret is using my character transfer prior to selling. I could have got 2-3 grand for my account quite easily as I had every item in the game. Oh well. All in all it was good times, just try not to get sucked in as badly as I did. :P

How are they ruining the game with they expansion?

And you don't need to talk to me about getting sucked into MMORPGs, I have a PC cluster that plays WoW with clientless software just sending packets to bot accounts and farm gold. I've been around for awhile, I like being sucked into it :)

actually i was really big on leading raids with my cleric on DAoC. Im such a good raid leader, even when drinking a 5th during the raid, that I am considering putting it on my resume under "other skills."

im really hoping WoW sucks me into it as good as UO and DAoC (i hated EQ when i was playing it but only did it cuz like 10 of my IRL friends all did).

Theres MMOGs coming out left and right now. DDO wasnt very cool, actually that game really sucked. They tried their damndest to be original, which is highly commendable, but ended up with a very fustrating game system unless you are guaranteed to have someone to group with at all times (soloing is not really possible).

Lineage II was such a lame attempt to rip off DAoC's underlying concepts that it forced me quit before I really explored it deeper.

Saw SWG is still on store shelves the otherday, another title i thought highly laughable and only oweing its inkling of success to the fact that it has the financial backing of a star wars endorsed title.

Neverwinter Nights is on its 347th expansion. Pretty cool game if you like AD&D but imo is lacking in content...a lot of content...

Come to think of it, ive seen several new monthly-pay style MMOGs fresh out on the racks. Its almost like the moneygrubbers in the industry are catching on to the fad, and are trying to pump out what products they can to make a buck of the rising bandwagon. Meh...id love to revert back to the days of UO when it was the only real mmog out there lol.

Age of Conan is looking really cool, i really think im gonna check that out when its released.

http://www.ageofconan.com/en/faq.html

cant wait to have my own battle axe toting sumerian, to crrrush mieh enemiez, zee zem drrrivhen befhore me, unt to hear zee lamentashunz of dere vemen.

course being such a warhammer fanatic im biting at the bit waiting for mythic to release the warhammer online, or at least let me in the damned beta allready. im still really really upset that fuckign EA went and bought mythic out, fucking loathe EA. but mythic's teams are exceptionally creative and original, and a milestone to technological developments. WAR presents some really new badass takes on pvp - really in effect limiting the grinding effort because as it stands now your 'homeland' can be invaded and destroyed, forcing the game to start over. Was an idea they tried on a test server with DAoC, i loved it then. plus theyre working alongside games workshop artists, who are reknowned for excellent traditional art skills, and wont give anyone the rights to an MMO without implementing these ideals.

thank god for games, otherwise id have a lot fewer brain cells and be interested in wasting time on women :)

All the gear is the same. Look at all the items:

+4000 stamina
+damage or +attack power
+crit rating
+resilience (anti crit)

then each item has 3 sockets
of which you can insert gems that either give you.. damage.. crit.. or resilience.

its retardation to an enormous degree. I don't want to slave away at a game to get +.5 crit rating while my enemy slaves away and gets +.5 anti crit. Thats idiocy.

From a warrior perspective pvp at level 70 is going to be so dumb its not even funny. I'd be running around with something like 8k armor .. 12k+ probly with a shield on. My rage generation is going to suck since crits don't give much bonus rage.. not to mention I won't be criting at all. Nobody is going to be criting actualy since the amount of crit rating is almost even with the amount of resilience across the board. So no crits.. and the amount of +str / atk power on gear is LOWER than current level 60 gear while having increased stam?

Its gonna take 20 minutes just to kill somebody. God forbid they are a healing class with any kind of mana regeneration. Shoot I bet I'll be able to outbandage / self heal through any kind of melee damage in PVP with bloodcraze / second wind talents..

Overall its retarded.

oh i wasnt referring to WoW's content Kul, im referring to their artwork. then again im not complaining when i can run it flawlessly on my crap ass machine. Wow Is pretty satisfactory as far as content, i had most of the game laid out to me by friends this weekend who have several 60s on both sides.

diddnt mean to come off so negative with wow, i think its a great game.

and i played EQ right when ruins of kunark came out, cuz that was when EA bought OSI out and turned UO into a complete and utter carebear nightmare.

what servers are u guys on? i know thers like 500 lol. Im on vashj currently with alliance and may soon have some hordes on earth and rain ( i liek to play RP servers cuz far fewer little kids on them).

And you don't need to talk to me about getting sucked into MMORPGs, I have a PC cluster that plays WoW with clientless software just sending packets to bot accounts and farm gold. I've been around for awhile, I like being sucked into it

you arent from china or korea, are you? LOL jk...
