[VIC] Rainbow Serpent 2011 (21 Jan - 24 Jan)

We had a coleman last year at our site which got destroyed by the wind and my gazebo didn't hold up too well either.

I'm keen to know what other infrastructure options people used that successfully stayed up in the wind.

Yeah that wind was pretty hectic! Our gazebo was destroyed in a little under 45min haha.

Did you just use the normal shit pegs that came with it to anchor it down? I've got some rather massive nails to hold it down.

Curious to know what part of it broke? Cheers mate :)

any cons im not seeing in sleeping in car?

Being out amongst the culture and the liveliness of it all?

Thats the fun of it all!
Sleeping in a tent in a psychedelic stupor, waking up tired and walking to the dance floor, crazy bugs in the tent, talking to your sleeping bag, trying to sleep while some tripper is stroking your tent... ITS ALL IN GOOD FUN!

i can get a mattress to lay flat in the back, so i should be comfortable enough.
it gets bloody hot in tents to, i could crank the A/C pre sleep maybe?
i can see ur slains point too. but if i pretend my car is a tent? haha
might bring both, just incase

workshops are generally free, i cant member paying for any of em

A number of friends use their cars (albeit station wagons) to camp at doofs - if you just set up a shade area for yourself during the day and don't rely on the inside of your car - only for sleeping at night, you'll be fine. It can get bloody cold at night at RSF so a warm interior of a car which blocks out most noise would be great.

The set time are up for main stage and they are absolutely off the hook, gonna be a tough one, need to go for about 12hours straight

^ yeah I'm not leaving the mainstage from the time it opens til the time in closes. I like how sphrongle is playing straight after the opening ceremony so I'll be fresh (ish) to see them play.

I'm not too sure to be honest - it belonged to someone else in our camp. I just came back in the middle of the windstorm and had them tell me it was done and dusted. I think they were just using the normal pegs though.

Baysie - is your gazebo one of the pop up ones or does it have the poles that come in two parts and one slips on top of the other? Part of the problem with my pop up one was that the extra weight of securing it with extra ropes in the wind ended up being too much for the pop up mechanism and it doesn't really click and stay in place anymore. Kind of worried that the weight of the tarp may cause the same issue.

Ladies, :-)
the EC construction is a pop up type next to our tent.
the two RSF constructions are the pole type.

Both types need reinforcement.
Pop up types need extra guide ropes which bisect the sides (goes from ground up to middle of side and loops around the centre, a double loop over the apex, so more of the force is shared here and down the other side looping over the other bar) don't pull on them too hard, they are just to restrain them from moving.

Pole types, (incredibly) are best strengthened with a good duct tape on every joint, these designs lose there strength when they move around and the joints start to come apart

Always use 10-12" pegs, the "toys" they supply with the gazebo are crap :)

Samadhi, DFRS should be able to explain the rope strengthening technique for pop up, we helped her at RSF last year when the winds picked up.

I must advise you that all these techniques have been taught to me by my doof loving fiance - the bazego queen :D

duct tape will help, plenty of it on all the pivot points etc . . . . incredible how much more strength it can give you.
Kat if the gazebo connections are pretty stuffed, you might be best using a lighter tarp.

The thing about using the tarp over the top is that it shared the load of the guide ropes on the tarp across the gazebo structure and is less of stress than guide rope strengthening on the gazebo alone

Sweet - thanks so much for the advice.

We're looking at picking up something like this:

Haven't been able to locate any of the pole ones. Where did you purchase your one from out of curiosity?

My pop up one was only 3x3 - I thought that perhaps the bigger one might also be better with more distribution of weight.

In other news - I'm freaking excited about the music (esp Shpongle live after the opening ceremony and the Sunday morning lineup) as well the activities that our mega campsite is coming up with :) Can't wait to walk out of work next wednesday arvo =D

OH EM GEE!
LOOK AT THAT SEXY MAINSTAGE!

Fark. I'll be there for like 12 hours.

Also, what day is everyone getting up there? Are we all gonna be good boys and girls and get there on the thursday to set up early? ;)

Actually picked it up from Bunnings on special for $100

that one looks okay Kat, just be careful with the sidewalls, quite often the connections can be week and they can cause more trouble than not having them. The first time with built the 6x3 with the side walls, they got caught by the wind and got ripped off, they actually put a lot of strain on the gazebo. That is why it is better reinforced with the tarp down one side as the wind break, the force is shared across the gazebo not just one part.

And remember, DUCT TAPE and plenty of it. Good luck, hope to bump into you again and you can show me your village :D
