[VIC] Rainbow Serpent 2011 (21 Jan - 24 Jan)

btw, never been to rainbow serpent before, any tips?

Hitching a ride from Sydney with a gumtree random, should be interesting :)

#1 Prepare to have your mind completely and utterly BLOWN by how amazing this festival is.

#2 Make sure you have very good shading. I recommend the Coleman event 14 sunshade. Normal gazebo's are simply not strong enough for the high amounts of wind up there (you can see the wind turbines from the event site)

#3 Bring a good eskie to store ice in for most of the weekend.

#4 Bring lots of nutritious snack foods that are easy to eat like muesli bars, up and go's, fresh fruit etc etc. AND bring plenty of cash so you can eat the amazing assortment of food the stalls have to offer!

#5 DON"T bring any glass. Or if you must, make sure it doesn't break. No one likes standing on glass in bare feet.

#6 Go to the pool party on the saturday! It is a must for mid-weekend refreshment.

#7 Bring a silly costume as once you arrive, you'll understand :P :P

#8 Invite your campsite neighbours over for a beer!

#9 When your body tells you to slow down, listen to it! Sleep when you can.

#10 SMILE! And enjoy what an amazing festival this really is. It will change your outlook on life.

Just imagine the awkwardness if the person offering the lift saw it. Would kinda be funny in a painfully awkward way.

Oh yeah! Especially the part when they ask wtf it is and you tell them it's your spare liver in case they turn out to be a raging psycho! Totally grass ball and cricket worthy. :D

@zemullan that's a good list :)

Nobody would dare eat my liver. You'd instantaneously die of alcohol poisoning.

great list zermullan!

Also, how about security/cops? Is this your regular doof where you can be pretty open about drug use, or not?

What about drugs? Easy to find there, or better to bring your own?

Security is there to make sure no one fights, no one jumps on the stages and that's about it. You may get your car searched on the way in for glass only.

As for sourcing stuff there, i don't think that's allowed on these forums. But you will be pleasantly surprised at the openness haha :P Bring what you can, but if not, i'm sure you will be ok!!;)

Just and then you know, these doofs are policed, although low key, my wise words would be

DON'T BE STUPID

show the same discreetness you would anywhere else in a public place.

Also note that booze/drug buses have been used on return routes for doofers

We had a coleman last year at our site which got destroyed by the wind and my gazebo didn't hold up too well either.

I'm keen to know what other infrastructure options people used that successfully stayed up in the wind.

^ That's good to know, we were planning on buying one of those Colemans (as it apparently holds up well to wind lol).

I'd be keen to hear other suggestions. I guess heavy duty guy-ropes with extra large pegs would help. Isn't the RSF site near a wind farm or something similar?

Kat/Samadhi - we have found that the most successful set up is a standard gazebo reinforced with a heavy duty tarp, at least one side of the tarp should be pegged directly to the ground.
I will show a couple of examples which have held up in strong winds.

The bigger structures are with cheaper 3M x 6M car ports

GREAT NEWS!! my bf and I are coming now!!!
got two tickets for $350 :D changed our minds after talking with our friends about it all yesterday at the Goon N Coon- realized it was actually quite feasible for us to go (at present I got work Friday and Monday tho- with any luck can wrangle an ADO for Monday..). had wanted to for ages of course bit was thinking it was a no-go for us this year
mega-excited!!

Brilliant, thanks for that Baysie :) I just mentioned it to my hubby and he pretty much said that is what he's done in the past in high winds! I think we'll just get a normal gazebo and reinforce it with our massive tarp :)

I had one of those giant tee-pee's last year. The wind broke one of the supporting poles during that crazy wind. Being in the tee-pee whilst it gets ripped apart, WHILST tripping absolute fucking balls is the scariest shit ever!

Hahahahahahaha

Oh man that would have been hell. During the massive winds my gazebo uprooted and smashed into the neighboring tents, felt really bad and helped them all set back up, trying to set a tent up while tripping feels like rocket science lol.

Cheers Baysie - I think that sounds like the goods. Looking at buying a 3x6 gazebo that comes with sandbags too!

What size tarp have you used over the top?

its a big mo fo, I think it is 9M or 10M x 5M. it's a heavy duty one from Bunnings, expensive, but cheaper than disposing of a gazebo after each doof.

We have used it at 3 now and it's still going (some minor repairs to eyelets) at EC, the first pic, we had it over the tent and a gazebo

The other two are RSF pics and both times it was over 2 x 6M x 3M car ports
