Unrealistic examples of drug abuse on TV (House, etc.)

I couldn't get into Nurse Jackie because of the very first scene wherein she opens up a capsule, uses a razor or something else not to crush and chop them up, but to just slide them into a line and SNIFF THE INTACT BEADS. 8)

Sarah Silverman tripping on cough syrup (assumed DXM) seemed like a regular generic depiction of drugs as giving you open eye visuals of a totally different land at first, but my friend who had reach "Plateau Sigma" once in my car said it was dead on accurate of what he felt at that level, he said grass and the sun were all extremely cartoonish looking to him.

I think the speed of onset of effects is exaggerated a lot, as in Breaking Bad where they first try to sell some powdered meth to this Latino who takes a quick sniff and remarks on how good it is. But, hey, I'll give that a pass because most shows probably don't have the time to let dudes hang around awkardly until the effects come on.

OH, and Dumbo, getting drunk doesn't make you see Heffalumps and Woozles! Get a clue you idiot elephant. (I kid, I'm very attached to that movie).

And, maybe it's a stretch to dog on a movie for a fictional drug, but a friend showed me a clip from Batman Begins where there's a street drug that pretty much just freaks people out. Really? That many people are going to be lining up for a drug that gives you a psychotic reaction and bad times?

anyone else ever see the episode of captain planet with the designer drug "bliss" that turns people into zombies? seemed to be an E reference to me.

Yea the H scene from breaking bad was pretty bad. I really enjoy that show and I feel that they at least depict shit in a more realistic light but sometimes it's pretty lame.

My ex used to get so pissed because I would always talk about how house would never take that much vicoden because of all the tylenol.

Remember on Saved by the bell when jesse (the chick from showgirls) got addicted to caffine pills and wigged the fuck out.

I'm so exciiiiited.... I'm so..... scared....

loved that episode.

something has always bugged me about the movie spun. i mean i used to tweak and everything and i guess it wasn't so far off but i didn't see one damn pipe in that whole movie. i mean really what kind of experienced tweaker (which i'm assuming she was---the cook's girlfriend) still smokes off damn foil?? there was some real shit in that movie, but i think they based a lot of it off stereotypes of meth use. i wish they would show some functional tweakers on tv/movies, not the fuckin crack-a-lacks.

Haha I agree about the cleaner.....The whole time I was thinking, I would kill him so dead if he tried to kidnap me via some lame relatives permission.

no shit, all he did was get them detoxed right? wonder how many of those people would go cop right after they were "set free," haha. that episode where that chick was 7mos pregnant and smoking ice was pretty fucked up though. (man thinking about this show is bringing up all kinds of real-life questions in my head but not trying to get off topic...)

in the show breaking bad the main character's short lived "girlfriend" introduces him to booting meth and dope, and it was terrible to watch! first the cotton she uses is like 30 times too big, and she like filters it once, but the worst part was the set she was using, it was terrifying. it had this huge ass tip like an inch long and when she shot the main character up, she just kind of jabbed it into his arm and pushed the whole needle in. didnt register or anything, and just slammed down the plunger in like 2 seconds flat. it was a terrible terrible scene. i'm sure there was more, but i just cant remember it all.

you'd think that with shows like intervention that show the whole act of shooting up, they'd do some better research. i mean that's a pretty popular show right? they must have the money to use fuckin google for fucks sake

Fuck intervention and that dr. Phil looking asshole.

damn, hostile much? you can't lie, there's some pretty graphic shit going down on that show. not as much as it used to be, but still. that's not my point anyway...i'd rather see realistic drug use and the majority of the shows on television are either too scared to show it or just don't know shit.

I've never injected any drug outside of being injected with morphine at the hospital, but The Panic In Needle Park seemed like it was pretty right on, if not, it's at least a damn good movie that feels very real. I'd suggest anyone who is on this sight should watch it.

remember when Dr House was suspected of heroin usage by the medical staff? turned out he was on methadone; presumably to deal with vicodin addiction

also, in films too, such as Rush, Requiem for a Dream, Trainspotting, there's big-ass needles/syringes, over-cooking of dope, and stupid phrases: "heroin is like a thousand orgasms at once"; and of course EVERYONE must strap a belt around their arm before injecting

unsure there's ever been a film/TV that captured heroin/drug usage realistically. can anyone name one?8)

i think Pulp Fiction has a pretty accurate dope scene with vinnie vega

^^Maybe the Vincent Vega part, but the part where Uma Thurman OD's is ridiculous.

You don't OD from snorting heroin 2 seconds after it goes up your nose...

and you dont administer adrenalin either to fix an OD. if i get it right:
naloxone to stop the opiate action, then if their heart stops, THEN give an adrenalin shot?

I feel like I've seen scenes in movies too many times when people just jam needles into there necks to reverse some horrible infection or something. It's a good thing people don't really go around doing shit like that.

The Sopranos, when that younger gangster guy Christopher first started banging heroin. To prep the shot, he sits there like 5 minutes boiling it...then when the shot is prepped, there's barely anything in it...like, 5-10 units of water. Then he takes off his shoe and sock and injects it in between his toes. Just made me go wtf?

Have you ever seen what happens when someone who's already been drinking alcohol snorts 200mg of near pure diacetylmorphine hydrochloride? I doubt it's a completely realistic scene, but the amount of heroin that could reach her brain in the first minute might be outrageous if she really snorted like 20 doses at once as it looked like in the film. There could be some localized bleeding quickly too...

The most jarring unrealistic example of drug use I've seen is in the film Requeim for a Dream. When they inject heroin, their pupils dilate. Heroin makes your pupils constrict. :(

not unrealistic! i had my arm amputated cuz it got infected, and the guy from scary movie was there too

in all seriousness though its one of my favourite movies,

A show that dealt with alot of drugs was Six Feet Under, and it was mostly pretty accurate, although one person dies from jumping out of the window on lsd, and they talk about like getting high on weed dip in formaldehyde and a guy freaks out like crazy on it,
