Unrealistic examples of drug abuse on TV (House, etc.)

In Californication, one of the early episodes, the "hero" takes a little bit of coke from the stash of his friend before leaving, and puts it on top of his cigarette and smokes it... Bullshit. I hate this bad show.

Like in the show "The Cleaner", it was pretty accurate, and it was based on a real person so I figure he would have had input, but anyways...

yes that show was very short lived and very stupid, IMO. The character of 'the Cleaner' was the intervention expert who was a badass with a dark past. He stalked his patients/victims with Navy Seal like precision then he would swoop down like Rambo, taser and hogtie their asses. He'd hustle them away to some warehouse in the bad side of town and let them go cold turkey, the only method of detox that a TV audience actually cares to see.

I've seen people do this, not sure if it's cost it actually works or because they are stupid and have seen it on TV and decided to replicate =P

I would try but coke is way to expensive to waste.

ugh...that show was just straight up terrible. cuz "cold turkey" is really the effective way that will help the addict long term, right 8( you 100% right about that-its the only thing the audience cares to see....another corny as shit thing was how he was always talkin with his personal "god" who was right there and has conversations with him , and its "his understanding of god" or smoe bull like that, he was so arrogant and condescending about it like he was on some higher level of understanding god or some shit....Also how the meth addicts and other addicts of drugs that you either dont have physical withdrawals from, or the wd's aint nothing like the heroin wd's, they would still show them kicking with the sweats and vomiting and etc, everything just like a heroin WD session would be....it was completely ridiculous. that was a shitty show one of the worst i seen when it comes to drugs....co sign with yo bot times a hundred

also, good to see u postin man

I don't think the show House meant to imply that he was having hallucinations as a direct result of taking the Vicodin, I think they meant to imply that the Vicodin was triggering his hallucinations because he was already so mentally unstable at the time. That's not far fetched at all.

Case in point: I used to get wicked cases of sleep paralysis back when I was using dope (hallucinations and paralysis just before falling asleep or upon waking). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

I've never experienced it once since getting clean.

edit: I do agree with you about his "rapid overnight detox" though, that was totally unrealistic and I remember wondering wtf they were thinking when they showed that, especially considering the show's writers have doctors that they consult with when writing each show.

Hmm, it's not an innacurracy as such, but in the show scrubs, when Dr Cox is talking about how it's hard morally as doctor to treat the 'bad guys', and he's describing them as 'the child molesters, the drug addicts', etc... Dude. Don't lump addicts with child molesters.
Also, when Dr Reed gives this woman 1 benzo and she's fitting all over the place. Wtf.

Number 1 media material for drug misinformation though is the video's they put on in class. I'm not even gonna go into those.

With regards to House, it has been mentioned several times in the series by concerned coworkers that his liver is getting fried, but House brushes them off. I think it is implied that he knows his body is suffering a lot of damage, but that it is caused by his character's attitude towards himself. He is deliberately punishing himself for all the wrong choices he has made in his life. His past is also what causes his misanthropy and because of his self-loathing he feels the need to punish himself in addition to his addiction.

Well, at least that's the explanation I've come up with after wondering the same. The writers seem to have their medical facts down (except in that horrible episode where they called Toxoplasma a fungus!!), so it would be weird for them not to catch something like this.

Cheers!

Haha I agree about the cleaner.....The whole time I was thinking, I would kill him so dead if he tried to kidnap me via some lame relatives permission.

I swear when house starts tripping it's because he took LSD to stop a migraine, then took a load of SSRIs to cut the trip short. At least thats what happened in that episode were he trys to proove that the anti-migraine medicine the guy who got him kicked out of medschool invented doesn't work, by inducing a migrane then taking some of said medicine.

Does he trip out in another episode as well?

There is lots of drug abuse on TV that is perfectly legitimate: How often do writers, producers and TV studios abuse the shit out of a poor defenseless drug like MDMA or LSD or even pot? Really, if people take drugs they want to kill everyone around them and then cap themselves? Oh, thanks for the PSA...

How enraging!

Yeh, I havn't actually seen this, but from hearing people talk about it I have gathered that the chick who kills her self the the beginning of the latest season of Skins is on MDMA, who the fuck would kill them selfs while on mandy?

I agree shephard89, skins is a strange series to watch when they bring out the drugs - usually I turn over or sigh at the usage of them.

in the show breaking bad the main character's short lived "girlfriend" introduces him to booting meth and dope, and it was terrible to watch! first the cotton she uses is like 30 times too big, and she like filters it once, but the worst part was the set she was using, it was terrifying. it had this huge ass tip like an inch long and when she shot the main character up, she just kind of jabbed it into his arm and pushed the whole needle in. didnt register or anything, and just slammed down the plunger in like 2 seconds flat. it was a terrible terrible scene. i'm sure there was more, but i just cant remember it all.

youth in revolt had a legit shroom equence imo too. hilarious also. well ok semi legit, floating mini people fucking wasnt but just on the ground feeling it was lol

Especially on the amount we see her use haha. This went everywhere all sorts of kids when mephedrone was getting big and everyone began wanting 'MDMA like Skins' around here.

the fresh prince episode "just say yo" was great. Carlton took 200mg of amphetamine, proceeded to tear it the fuck up on the dance floor, then have a heart attack or somethin. great.

I just watched the 7th heaven clip, histerical. Gotta love the complete over exageration of these drugs. Of course you have to think that most shows don't have the balls to say the truth, because then they'd probably get sued for "promoting drug use" however if the promote wrong and unsafe drug practices and someone dies, it's their own fault. Complete double standarad.

If you're at school and talking to turtles, chances are you don't need any weed
