DRUG dealers have claimed the life of an innocent man who swallowed a massive dose of the Class A drug crystal meth, thinking it was a health drink. Romano Dias, 55, had been given a bottle of what appeared to be a fruit-based drink as a treat by his daughter Katee, who had found it in a package delivered to her home, an inquest was told. He was taken ill immediately after drinking half a glass of the liquid and died shortly afterwards.

Analysis by police showed that the bottle did not contain the drink on the label but £34,000 of pure methamphetamine – otherwise known as crystal meth – a drug rarely found on the streets of Cambridgeshire. Detective Inspector Ian Simmons told the inquest in Huntingdon. “The £34,000 is a significant amount. “I would say it is highly likely it was destined for a dealer.”

DI Simmons said: “It is unique, this is not an event that happens in Cambridgeshire or elsewhere.” He said that crystal meth was a drug police “rarely encounter” in Cambridgeshire. DI Simmons said Mr Dias, of Lone Tree Avenue, Impington, and his family had not been connected with the drug in any way, adding: “This was a completely unaccountable and unforseen chain of events.” He said it was his professional opinion that the bottle had been part of a plan to bring Class A drugs into the UK.

The package had been delivered up to three years ago and the wrappings had been destroyed, limiting the police investigation.

I live in Cambs and have never heard of any crystal meth about, a lot of Polish speed around though.
I know a lot of folk who would have loved the chance to have bought some of it.

I lived in Cambs in the 90s and I heard one report from a friend of it being about then. Guess it never really took off...

The story is a bit strange, as some of the reader comments indicate. A drink arrives unexpectedly in the post with the wrong name on it. Someone signs for it? They then keep it three years (way past its sell-by date) and then offer it to their dad. He notices something strange about the way it is sealed but drinks it anyway. Urrm...

^ What you guys said. Can't believe he'd drink half a glass of it and not know it wasn't what it was supposed to be? A sip maybe, but unless he hasn't got any taste buds or something, half a glass seems rather odd.

If this is factual then that must be a really shit way to go. Supersensitive senses and hardcoure anxiety slowing time considerably while you "slowly" die one second at a time. Not cool. The culprids should be shot

That must have been a ridiculously huge dosage of methamphetamine. I can understand how most of this could happen - a dealer orders drugs to his neighbour's house, hoping to grab it from their mailbox before his neighbour has the chance to check it - but the 3 years that the package spent not being used? Huh?

yeah.....whole lotta nonsense going on in this story.

"hey! I got a package! oh wait....it`s not for me,or anybody else who lives here. Weird. I guess I`ll just hang on to it. Maybe the rightful owner will somehow find out that I have it and pick it up."

3 long years go by...........

"Hmm,if nobody is going to open this thing, then I guess I will!" (rips open box) "A stupid bottle of expired juice? Gross".

(Dad walks in,snacking on a plate of deluxe nachos smothered in jalapenos and cheese)
"Holy fuck these are spicy! My British pallet can`t handle the flavor explosion! Oh hey! Mind if I wash `em down with this random bottle of old juice?"

Daughter: "Sure! Knock yourself out!"

Dad: "Christ! This drink taste terrible! Maybe if I chug more,I`ll get used to the off putting chemical taste and start to enjoy it for it`s unique flavor!"

Yep. Happens all the time 8)

In the full article it says he drank half a glass, then it says he took a sip, said it tasted awful and his throat was burning and then he said he was dying. So which was it? And when he opened it tgere was a cork under the cap. theres so much weirdness. As stated above the daughters actions make no sense but why would someone drink juice thats obviously been tampered with, is super old from some mysterious package, and if it burned him/tasted awful, why keep drinking it!?

If he actually drank a half glass, this is probably the single largest fatal meth ingestion in medical history.

I'd agree it is pretty hard to not taste in high concentration. Mixing drinks with meth is my preferred RoA at this point, and generally they need to be pretty sweet just to cover up the salty taste of 10mg.

Romano Dias dies after drinking from sports bottle containing $60K of crystal meth

DRUG dealers have claimed the life of an innocent father, who drank from a bottle containing $60,000 AUD of crystal meth believing it was a sports drink.
An inquest into the death of Cambridge man Romano Dias has heard the 55-year-old was given a bottle of what appeared to be a fruit-based health drink by his daughter Katee.
It had been mailed to her London address, but with the wrong name on the package. She hung on to it for years, expecting someone to eventually claim it.
They never did, so Katee passed the bottle on to her father.

Mr Dias drank about half a class of the liquid and complained to his partner Debra Dulson that it tasted "awful", the Daily Mail reports.
He complained that his throat hurt before saying "I am in trouble here. I am dying. I am dead."
Police analysis of the bottle showed it contained $58,000 AUD of pure methylamphetamine, which has the street name crystal meth.
Detectives told Coroner William Morris during the inquest that they believed the package was destined for a drug dealer, but never made it. They reckon it was part of a broader plan to bring class A drugs into England, where crystal meth is relatively uncommon.

The person who sent the package has never been found, nor the person it was meant for.
Mr Morris said the tragic case was "dreadful".
He considered deeming it an unlawful killing, but conceded there was no evidence that the person who sent the parcel meant for Mr Dias, or anyone else, to drink it.
Mr Dias' death was concluded to be accidental.

my biggest query is why he would ingest a 3 year old sports/health drink after it had been sitting in the house, yet was addressed to be delivered to somebody else? surely a glass of water or something else available in the home would have sufficed as a thirst quencher or health alternative. also, the seal on the packaging/bottle would have been broken to have the substance placed inside; so why was it held onto for 3 years if the family simply believed it was "gatorade" or a "health drink"? something doesnt quite add up in this story.

...kytnism...:|

I'm sorry, but I believe it was recklessness combined with bad luck (rather than drug dealers) which claimed the life of Romano.

Perhaps my taste buds are failing, but from what I recall, crystal meth tastes rather salty and bitter. I can only imagine what such a massive amount must have tasted like, even after 3 years of diminishing returns, so to speak.

Not just cambridshire; meth is a rarity pretty much everywhere in the UK. I think that stash would have been a large supply for here. The story's pretty tragic though; poor guy's not trying to get high - just wants a drink - then he dies for no reason. But that's the world of dealing for ya.

This is certainly one of the strangest drug stories that I have read recently, just doesn't seem to add up.

Charge his daughter with murder. She is the culprit. =D

That would be funny if it werent exactly the way the authorities often DO treat victims of drugs accidents. The daughter is obviously as big a victim as her dad...

... bloody odd story though. Something doesn't smell right. One thing's certain, the reports as they stand are pure propaganda...

edt: must have stopped his heart, & he knew he was fucked. Scarey! I am still aghast at the circumstances. If I was a rich bastard I'd keep an eye on this story &/or send my resident PI round to follow this up. There simply must be more to it...

this kind of reminds me of a news story from florida i think, hell it might have even been in SA. but someone made a bunch of soda cans filled with liquid cocaine, and somehow a few of the cans ended up in a real shipment and ended up at a store where a person accidently ingested some...pretty sure it was non fatal. ppl have been smuggling liquid crystal for ages, they put it in wine bottles even winshield wiper fluid ports on cars. im guessing this was disguised as lucozade right? red liquid in a clear bottle? how it ended up sitting for three years and someone drinking enough to die is pretty strange. unless that guy was so dehydrated and out of it he just guzzled it he might have ingested enough. still some pretty big holes in this story.

and to add, ive always wondered how crystal isnt a common drug in the uk, its huge everywhere else but the brits seem to like their plain old amphet salts, tho i bet TONS of ppl would do crystal if it were available. you would think the mexican cartels would expand on that market somehow...tho they would have to move out the competition.

I havent seen any kind of amphetamine on the street in the uk for a long time & last time I did it wasn't very good. It was awful, useless. But I understand that Amphetamine Sulphate does still do the rounds & often in reasonably good quality. I've had some cracking good base speed in my time, I once made an 8th of phet last about 6 years it was so fuckng good!
