U.S. decrees that marijuana has no accepted medical use

Our government is so ignorant. they are more worried about what their colleagues will think of them for accepting medical marijuana, than looking past the condemnation of medical marijuana. I am a Oregon medical marijuana patient, and i have been affected by the DEA's snoopy asses trying to shut down our dispensaries.

My local dispensary is being watched and investigated by the feds and due to that, extra security precautions have been executed by the owners. The government is wasting time & money on a situation that is extremely less harmful than they portray it as. In the local dispensary you will meet the coolest nicest people ever. Everybody is stoned and having fun, relaxing, socializing, being themselves, not doing anybody harm but rather stimulating the social bonds between humans that have started to fade due to electronics and worse drugs than weed.

The government is waging a war on harmless people who have no worse intentions than getting stoned or trying to make an extra buck that can't be provided in an economy like this and a job world like today's.

Also, about the high abuse potential & no accepted medical use. BULLSHIT. Marijuana has the longest list of symptoms that it alleviates! it renders benefits to all sorts of conditions! and at no serious health risk! physical dependence is non-existent and the effects are practically all positive.

As for the high abuse potential........ANYTHING CAN BE ABUSED! gambling has a high abuse potential. alcohol has a high abuse potential. cigarettes have the highest and worst abuse potential. i have heard statements from drug & alcohol counselors, one of which was, "it is harder to get off cigarettes than heroin." i wouldnt know because i have never been dependent of either. My point is, the government isblind and illogical. When will there be a change? when will people open their minds and just realize?

Thank you BL for listening to my rant but i have alot to say when it comes to medical marijuana. this is a good topic to discuss. the more we discuss, the more ideas that are out there and the more people that are involved could help make a difference.

the Controlled Substances Act needs to be done away with. Enough of this prohibition of some drugs. The FDA would never concede that vodka or Newports have accepted medical uses, but the DEA isn't about to schedule these.

the CSA is an inconsistent, absurd set of laws. It must die

Actually, it doesn't. Scheduling is controlled by the DEA, and Congress has no part in that aspect.

The DEA and the scheduling of controlled substances was created with a federal law enacted by Congress called the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970. The DEA is granted its authority under this law. Only Congress can change or rescind this law. The DEA will never undermine itself.

The DEA won't ever lower cannabis to schedule II. Cannabis is by bar the most wildly used illegal substance. There will always be importers and growers to bust, and it will always be biggest source of funding for the DEA. I honestly agree that it will take an act of Congress (or of revolution) to decriminalize or legalize cannabis.

That said, I also don't think it is far off. The economy is still shit (despite what the talking heads tell us) and the only jobs that ARE available (at least that I have found) are in manual labor or manufacturing. Lots of people with higher education are now unemployed without prospects, and have chosen to go back to a trade school or community college to find work. Cannabis is and always has been a blue collar drug. If the shake-down of our economy continues to land people in poverty, and if the rapidly inflating state continues to fund itself by tossing poor people in jail for using the most prevalent and benign of the few drugs they can make themselves, then we can expect to see things come to a climax.

Eventually the state will be faced to make concessions to the people, or expect to be overthrown. Although Cannabis is a huge money maker for big government, they will likely be able to break even on its legalization by taxing commercial production. This makes is a likely candidate, since other concessions to the serfs would be more costly to the power elite.

My understanding is that "alcohol" and "tobacco" are not considered to be "drugs", since they are specifically regulated separately from the U.S. Food, Drug and Cosmetic act. They are also not specified as a controlled substance, so they don't meet the legal definition of "illegal drug". Basically, since they were widely used by the people writing the laws, they were specifically ignored when the system used for regulating and scheduling drugs was put in place. They now exist in a gray area, where they are regulated and taxed as if they weren't harmful and addictive substances because everyone just pretends that they are different from other drugs. That's why they always say "drugs and alcohol". It is a farce, and everyone knows it.

It can't be said that ethyl alcohol isn't considered a drug. It is an antidote for methanol poisoning, or antifreeze (ethylene glycol) poisoning. It is therefore used to treat a disease and is a drug.

If you go to a hospital with antifreeze poisoning they are going to give you Fomepizole, not alcohol. Although in the past alcohol has been used by the medical industry for everything from (as you said) an antidote to an antiseptic, it will never LEGALLY be considered a "drug". The whole point of my post is that what is LEGALLY TRUE and what is REALITY are two very different things. If alcohol and tobacco were LEGALLY considered drugs, they would immediately fall under the authority of the FDA. A blind eye has been turned to alcohol and tobacco since the USFDC act because rich white dudes like to get smashed and smoke cigars. That's also the real reason why alcohol prohibition didn't last. The power elite wanted their booze.

By your logic, it can't be said that cannabis has no medical value, but they continue to do that, too. I wish I lived in a world run by you, numbers guy, but the fact is that the people who run shit are more concerned with money than truth, or a properly functioning society.

The DEA is going to stick to any policies that make a substance illegal. The more substances that are illegal the more funding the DEA gets, which means bigger paychecks and more DEA agents! When will the government start acting righteous and not fucking scumbag evil! Locking people up in cages and taking away their freedoms and tainting their records for life all because they choose to use or have a certain substance on them or in them.

The DEA is just adding to the criminal element associated with Marajuana and it's a shame because THC pills are available in the Pharmacy as a CIII why should pot be any different? it's actually the same thing. During Prohibition of alcohol, Criminal Interprise of gin mills was rampant and bootleggers gained substantial amounts of money from illegal sale of alcohol, all this is going to do is raise the crime rate and deprive people who need pot for legitimate reasons branding them criminals when they have to buy their drugs illegally.

Ethanol is a antidote for methanol poisoning, which is on its turn caused by intention to consume ethanol. ;) Funny thing.

Yes....Public Opinion is finally changing. Slowly but surely. Expose the US GVT.

At least public opinion on the issue is becoming less asinine. When the DEA says something like this that is clearly false it wears on their reputation. Hopefully this attitude shift materializes into more reasonable laws.

I agree 100%. My dad is a suboxone dr and he and I have many talks about the drug war, issues related etc.... Its nice getting a perspective from a dr and his colleagues that also agrees with this poster. Its just stupid. Its makes me so mad I cant talk about it for more than an hour or so or I get pissed. When his patients turn up dirty for pot he doesn't give a f*ck. He says the same thing that public opinion is changing and it makes these politicians look like the true liars they are. (Both Sides).

They cut funding from everything necessary and spend on law enforcement. In my city the sheriff just had a proposal to build a brand new 2x jail. When it went before the city council it was basically laughed out of the room. He didn't ever submit the proposal. Thank God. I digress....

So much wasted money, and cutting of things we need while we play politics and arrest people who need medical pot and how about not interfering with everybodies lives. Dr - Patient relationships are now monitored by big brother. My state has a new law that you have to see a pain specialist to get anything higher than 60mg Morphine P.O daily. Anybody who has taken morphine orally knows 60 mgs is about 5 -6 hydros. Its leaving thousands without meds while they scramble to find a new Dr, one who isn't then afraid to treat like they need too.

F*ck this government....F*ck politics. Give me my constitutional rights back and get the fuck out of my life. This kind of anti-common sense government we live under and it's fucked up ideologies are scarier than shit.

P.S Im not some radical either. I just cant take anymore of their lies and bullshit. The last drug czar straight up lied about results every time. And his main campaign was against pot. I wonder how much he made??? uggggghhhhhh......ridiculous.

I know how you feel dude.

Here's the pdf of the document on the federal register, I meant to post it earlier, it's much easier to read: (I dunno about linking directly to .gov sites, copy and paste if you're paranoid, but I'm sure they know us already)

http://frwebgate1.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/PDFgate.cgi?WAISdocID=aAA7pi/0/2/0&WAISaction=retrieve

There's a good few pages of solid science in there, so I'm baffled as to how they reached the conclusion they did. But I didn't read past the science, maybe someone who's not so bored by law/politics can summarise.

For a drug that has no medical value it sure helps my nausea a hell of alot better then the pills my doc gave me for it :p

It could say 100% safe....it practically already is. but nooooooo....How many DUI's this country have a year? Ciggarettes kill more people than anything.
Dont be thrown from that conclusion, they would reach it if it said pot cures cancer, aids, every terminal illness around, and you would still have politicians saying "omg this is such a deadly drug, a real killer." There is nothing until public opinion finally comes around.

Their argument hinges on the fact that the cannabis plant itself has not gone through the process of FDA approval for the treatment of a disease. I think every drug on their schedules 2-5 has either gone through this process or (for older compounds) has an uninterrupted pattern of official medical use in the US.

That argument, of course, is somewhat apart from the discussion of whether or not cannabis should be de-scheduled. Descheduling is potentially much faster than medicalizing (as with the 21st amendment).

Also, if the FDA approves Sativex, it essentially approves a strain of cannabis.
