Stop resisting!
The decision by the DEA comes almost nine years after medical marijuana supporters asked the government to reclassify cannabis to take into account a growing body of research that shows its effectiveness in treating certain diseases.

Marijuana has been approved by California, many other states and the nation's capital to treat a range of illnesses, but in a decision announced Friday the federal government ruled that it has no accepted medical use and should remain classified as a highly dangerous drug like heroin.

Advocates for the medical use of the drug criticized the ruling but were elated that the Obama administration has finally acted, which allows them to appeal to the federal courts. The decision to deny the request was made by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and comes less than two months after advocates asked the U.S. Court of Appeals to force the administration to respond to their petition.

"We have foiled the government's strategy of delay, and we can now go head-to-head on the merits," said Joe Elford, the chief counsel for Americans for Safe Access and the lead attorney on the lawsuit.

Elford said he was not surprised by the decision, which comes after the Obama administration announced it would not tolerate large-scale commercial marijuana cultivation. "It is clearly motivated by a political decision that is anti-marijuana," he said. He noted that studies demonstrate pot has beneficial effects, including appetite stimulation for people undergoing chemotherapy. "One of the things people say about marijuana is that it gives you the munchies and the truth is that it does, and for some people that's a very positive thing."

In a June 21 letter to the organizations that filed the petition, DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart said she rejected the request because marijuana "has a high potential for abuse," "has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States" and "lacks accepted safety for use under medical supervision." The letter and 37 pages of supporting documents were published Friday in the Federal Register.

This is the third time that petitions to reclassify marijuana have been spurned. The first was filed in 1972 and denied 17 years later. The second was filed in 1995 and denied six years later. Both decisions were appealed, but the courts sided with the federal government.

I choose to be blind and deaf.
I would rather hide my head and ignore science than admit that my propaganda has failed.

There should be a huge backlash to this.
This clear example of ignorance and politically-motivated science shows exactly what is wrong with the US.

Would anybody really expect the DEA to concede the issue? I don't. It's going to take an act of Congress to change the laws.

science isn't doing very well politically... being pitted against fundamentalism, and co-opted by financial interests...

Actually, it doesn't. Scheduling is controlled by the DEA, and Congress has no part in that aspect.
However.... Congress, if they so choose, could use any manner of methods to defund the DEA... But when was the last time a government agency so bloated would ever be brought to heel? The IRS has been at it far longer than the DEA.....

As it were, Congress doesn't have any teeth anyways.... not with the President, his Dept. czars, and his federal court cronies ruling by Executive Order and pocket-judge fiat....

This as a States' Rights fight..... and more States are beginning to pick up that fight. Theyre catching onto the DEA, that marijuana is the new cash crop, and that keeping it illegal is seriously hurting many States.... far out of proportion to the actual harm caused if it were completely decriminalized and cultivated commercially.

This is what happens when you let ideology get in the way of science. The arse goes right outta er :p

Instead of regulating and taxing marijuana and other plant drugs as a source of income, they tell us our economic situation is so dire that it's NECESSARY to cut education, Social Security, Medicare and other social programs that we all pay into and benefit from. How is that any different from stealing? There's only so much you can cut before society falls apart completely.

Unfortunately, 99.9999% of Americans can't see past the illusion that democrats and republicans are absolutely, 100% on the same team and care nothing about the flimsy social issues (abortion, gay marriage, immigration) they use to get elected. When election season rolls around, they'll get swept up in the media hype and finger-pointing between the two sides and we'll end up with someone like Sarah Palin or Barack Obama as president. Again.

At least public opinion on the issue is becoming less asinine. When the DEA says something like this that is clearly false it wears on their reputation. Hopefully this attitude shift materializes into more reasonable laws.

I think this decision is based less on ideology and more on people wanting to keep their jobs. It doesn't make the decree any less counter-intuitive and bull-headed, however. I just believe that makes more sense than them being against pot just because they have an irrational aversion to social change.

Yeah, definitely.

Didn't some federal agency JUST come out with a publication stating that marijuana does have medicinal value, thus contradicting it's schedule 1 status?

Yeah, but government employees keeping their health insurance trumps scientific progress nine times out of ten.

Why dont they go f**k themselves with this stupid shit............The federal government should never get involved in what the states want to do. I wish the DEA would get dismantled after Ron Paul becomes president (wishful thinking)

Also, another reason why they wont legalize it its because they want their cake & eat it too. Meaning the government allows the drugs to come into this country which they make alot of money on, then turn around & arrest people for dealing it & what not where they make money off of that too. Lawyers, judges, cops, even corrupt cops, they all make money & lets not forget the prisons, they make a ton of money. Now you tell me why legalize weed or any other drugs when they can make 5 times the money than if it was legal?
