tv: "Man vs Wild"

bear grylls is awesome. ive become a firm believer in this show. partly because of the scenery, but partly because of the intelligence involved. lets be honest... if you'd never seen an episode of this show and just took a vacation somewhere that he goes and you get stranded by yourself... wtf would you do? you'd have no idea. this guy really does to a service to those tards who lose themselves during a tourist see through. good for him, and good for those who pick up on them and apply them to real life.

good show.

What you just said is utter, utter nonsense.

What would happen to the average tourist who got stranded in some remote desert? They would die. Even if they had seen every episode of this show. They would die. Unless they were rescued. This show is not going to help anyone survive anything. It is purely entertainment.

As entrainment it works. Bear is a lively fellow, and he does cool shit. But as an instructional video, it's utterly useless. You also have to understand, this guy is following a route he has already carefully mapped out. He knows where he's going. He knows what natural rock and riverbed formations he'll be coming across. He's even got a two-man film crew with him. So no matter how perilous whatever he is doing may seem, just a few feet away the ground is solid and stable enough for a guy with a camera and a boom mike operator or lighting guy to be doing their thing.

Not only that, but the routes he takes are accessible enough for a camera crew to get down with all their equipment. So when he's scaling sheer rock face... guess what? 10 feet away the cameraman is on a flat surface shooting it and then following him down.

You know what would happen if you got stranded in a desert and followed en elephant around waiting for it to poop so you could drink its poop water? You would die, lost in a desert with some stanky poop breath.

I mean, really, this is nothing more than entertainment. animal_cookie is right, the sensible thing to do when you are lost is stay where you are and not wander around and expand the search zone. That would be a boring show though. Some of your are really out of touch with reality.

^^^^
Pessimist. Even if you just have nothing to eat/drink this show tells you about how to get water and what kind of stuff you can eat. Even if you're not going anywhere, that will help you survive. Plus that getting out of a sinkhole thing definitely applies if you actually fall into one... You just gonna wait 4 days like that stupid fuck who didn't know how to get out ?

Yeah, most of it is entertainment but he is teaching at least some survival skills that can be utilized.

my personal fav is les stroud, mostly for the simple fact that he films it all himself.

actually if you watch the credits he does pretty much everything himself.

hell.... he even made the shows' music.

All your bases belongs to Ray Mears.

He's just a normal bloke who learnt the tricks of survival by spending time in the wild with natives. None of this macho bullshit... just a quiet guy, with a lot of respect, and a wealth of knowledge. If you want the macho stuff, his "Heroes of Telemark" show was brilliant - telling the story of the special forces guys in WWII who spent years living on nothing but berries, snow and the occasional deer, in preparation for destroying the Nazi's heavy water plant (and effectively ending Hitler's nuclear ambition).

Download it. It's pretty heart-wrenching at times.

i think survivorman is a more accurate representation of what it's like to be stuck someplace trying to survive. You got Les all by himself doing mostly just the bare minimum for survival, and most of the things he does can be accomplished by the average viewer. The show feels more like a video journal; as good as the cinematography is, it never really makes one feel like they're there with Les, just watching him record himself.

On the other hand, Man vs Wild is more entertaining. Bear will deliberately do crazy stuff like climb sheer rock faces or jump over gaps which would mean disaster if he didn't make it. The show feels more like a reality tv show than a video journal. We're included much more in the action because there are two camera men. He also likely is in better spirits because he's got 4 other people with him, where as Les is really out there by himself.

btw the poo juice drinking was pretty wrong dude.. especially when the big poo chuck falls almost into his face. I would have rather strained the stagnant water and boiled it than drink elephant diarrhea

so apparently there has been a bit of drama, as a few things have been staged. so as far as respect goes....it is all about survivorman.

Ok, now that I have seen numerous episodes of both Man vs Wild and Survivorman, the guy on MvsW is way superior in skill than the other guy. Survivorman is a bum.

Yeah, Bear stays in hotels. I don't really have a problem with it as what he's showing you is still valid, he just doesn't sleep in the middle of a bug infested jungle every night. It's not like he's not still doing all the other stuff. The man drank water from elephant shit for gods sake.

I enjoy watching both shows.

Bear seems to be able to show and do a little more than Les, but then Bear has a film crew and his only worry is making an informative entertaining show.

For Les, having to lug all the camera shit about, that takes away from the amount of time and energy he has.......so it comes off like he is doing the bare minimum to survive because he IS doing the bare minimum.

Both shows are great though.....very enjoyable. Cant wait for new episodes.

How Bear Grylls the Born Survivor roughed it - in hotels

To viewers of his TV series, Bear Grylls is the daredevil adventurer who catapults himself into world's worst 'hellholes' and then survives on his wits alone.

But it has emerged that far from roughing it in brutal environments, the former SAS man actually spent nights in hotels during filming of his Channel 4 show.

The Eton- educated 33-year- old is also alleged to have choreographed parts of Born Survivor, with many of his spectacular stunts carefully set up by the production crew.

----

Even the producers admit it. The link I posted there is for 'Born Survivor' but I'm almost %100 sure I read one about Man VS Wild as well. Just trying to remember where I read it. Stuff about the crew setting up his boat ahead of time to make sure it worked, ect.

I don't know what all the fuss about these survivorman style shows is. I don't need to spend my time watching somebody drink urine just because they think it makes them look cool.

I prefer I shouldn't be alive. Its the rescue 911 of a new generation.

that's the thing, i don't get off on drinking urine, it isn't fucking fear factor (or feeder factor as my kid called it)

survivor man did just that, survived. this guy, it is all about show, i don't respect that as much.

The funny thing a that show is 90% of the people on it realy owe their misfortune to noone but themselves (wandering off in the jungle with no experience or supplies for example) and their survival to luck alone. I see it as the "almost Darwin awards", but it is still plenty entertaining
