Opioids Trouble Peeing on Opiates: Urinary retention issues Q&A Megathread

I can't remember the details, but I read something about this once. It has to do with a slowing down or weakening of the actual contractions of the bladder muscle. Another one of those CNS depressant side effects...
 
^ could be Mr. awesome greenlighter. Your probably right, with the entire CNS being depressed that probably means ur bladder muscles included, along with everything else.

It sometimes takes a good minute to start peeing, sometimes have to put the sink water on hah.
 
Opiates constricts the muscles in the bladder that controls the tension of releasing urine and fecal matter which causes urinary retention and constipation. It slows down the whole system of eliminating waste from your body which can be very detrimental after a while. Its very common and will go away as soon as the opiate wears off or if your an addict, it will lessen in intensity a lot after a while (at least the trouble urinating), the constipation continues on though unforunately, especially on methadone. I just try to drink lots of liquids, and stuff like fiber helps.

lysergic got it right, you have opiate cells all through out your body not only in your brain. When other opiate cells are full they have the tendency to choke off the normal body functioning. I have a bitch of a time pissing, I think Adderall adds to to the fact, contributing to the Buprenorphine in my body I have to have a bladder fulla of liquid if I want to piss for my P.O. and most times I cant because I am under some kinda presure to piss which makes it even more difficult. So I usually try to hold off on the Adderall before a U.A. and load up on Ativan or Klonapin, and plug my ears and imagine myself on a beach with 2 hot chicks waiting for me to get out of the washroom, if I dont piss they will leave so I usually piss.

It helps that my doc wrote my PO a letter explaining that the drugs I am on make it hard for me to urinate, combined with my social anxiety with somebody tapping there heel outside the door just makes it worse. So now I usually just get the eye test, if I fail that I take a normal U.A.

Sucks, but thats life on drugs...
 
thats the worst when you have a full load of pee and your just standing there wanting to pee but you just cant, than you stop thinking about it and it still takes a long time, but than it finally comes and yor good to go
 
Spent many a night bouncing of the bathroom wall while I stand there trying to pee and nodding out.


Sitting down helps and leaning forward a bit to put pressure on your bladder.
 
Lyserg and blah already went in-depth about it. All I can really add is that it is referred to as "urinary retention". Along side opiates, just opiate induced urinary retention.

You'll hear this as a side effect to many drugs - usually opioids and opiates though. It can also be a symptom/problem of it's own, and as such, there have been incidences of trouble.

There have been cases of Bluelighters not being able to pee on opiates, so they decide to force it out by drinking a shitload of water. Plan backfires, and these people have ended up going to the hospital because of urinary retention on opiates and having just chugged a half gallon of water.

When you can't pee and have alot of water in your bladder, you can go through some serious health complications.

So while under normal conditions there are things you can do - fiber, diuretics, et cetera, when under the influence of opiates, please do not try to force out the piss by drinking lots. Opiates will prevent it from coming it, you can't really do anything about it, and if you don't sober up before trouble comes up from not peeing, you may need a ride in the white bus.
 
i have foudn that since i switch from oxy and herion to methadone i have a way easyier time "dropping the cosby kids off" and peeing is a bitch espeically the twice a week drops at the methadone clinics... so days i have go so bad but it just doesnt happen... i have to go first thing int he mroning when i wake up because i always go first thing in the morning..... im so glad that methadone doesnt make me constipated like herion and oxy did.... I was so happy when i started shitting on a daily basis and they didnt feel like corn cobs anymore..
 
fuck. i ran the fucking water for AN HOUR once, tried every trick possible to get myself to piss for over an hour. sometimes it just wont come. im a dude and ive tried sitting down like a little girl and that just doesnt help me. can anyone recomend anything besides caffeine, as it it wont allow me to nod.
 
Isn't there a thread along the lines of "Share your Horror Stories from Opiate-Induced Urinary Retention"?

It might be in the archives. It's a good read, but... scary.

lol, I feel for ya man...PPT is the worst when it comes to opiate induced urinary retention. Took me just over 12 hours to piss once after a (huge) dose :(

damn man... how many pods did you ingest?? i had like 5 and a half "monster" sized pods and i got pretty messed up off them but after today's non-pissing experience, i really don't think i'm ever gonna do em again... i can't take this, i literally tried taking a shower for like 45 minutes straight and thought that maybe the warm water would help me piss, but nothing... sat on the toilet for like a half hour so far (i swear to god i'm on the toilet right now just trying to fucking piss with the laptop just hoping it comes soon...)

That experience was the result of drinking roughly 25-30 (large) pods worth of tea. At the time my normal "get high" dose was 10 or 12 pods so admittedly it was pretty stupid of me. I spent the entire night throwing up, unable to piss, sleep or move save for trips to the toilet to puke and dryheave every hour.

You'd think that experience would have set me straight, but I went on to develop a pretty bad habit with the tea (15+ pods every other day...eventually every day). That coupled with occasional IV heroin use and I've recently found myself on suboxone.

I still love my opiates though...

damn... something like that would definitely make me not want to do it again..... although, the last time i did these pods about a month ago i did throw up like 3 times and i did it again today.... but this is worse to me... i feel like i have to piss, it's been 11 hours and no piss yet, and i'm tired... and i thought i was gonna puke earlier... i've had enough for the time being

think i'll go to sleep and hope that when i wake up i can FINALLY piss

same, i wasn't gonna post that, but since you did i may as well b/c i'm sure other junkies have the same problem, for some reason i can't piss standing up when i'm loaded up on opiates. sitting down is no problem tho... very strange. any ideas why, or anyone else besides me and clubbinguido get this problem/solution?
 
For those who are having trouble pissing, ive never noticed it from PPT, in fact i piss MORE often after drinking a healthy dose of PPT. try taking some diuretic (coffee, tea, etc) and maybe it will help you piss, even a cigarette sometimes helps. or try sitting down, it really does help me when i absolutely cannot piss.

I wouldn't wait til you wake up , its probably bad for your body not to piss for 20+ hours especially if you have to. look online for diuretic's, on wiki it says most stim's are, which i figured.

if you have any ritalin, focalin, dexedrine, adderall, coke, etc, take a TINY dose (if you need to sleep) and i'm sure it will help you piss, and if you are afraid of insomnia take a benzo or more PPT after you piss. sleeping on a bladder full of piss usually ends up being a very uncomfortable night's sleep.
